2023 Chevy Equinox | Review & Road Test

The Equinox from Chevrolet gets a few tweaks to its compact five-passengerness. Not quite a refresh, so no graphics. Sorry.
First and foremost, the nice peeps at Chevy decide to give Equinox buyers a bit more power. That’s nice, but it’s not much, five more horses.
Listen I’ll take whatever I can get in the horsepower department, right? The 1.5-liter turbo now gets 175 ponies while torque remains the same at 203 lb-ft. Do I feel like it makes a difference? If this were a vote I’d likely abstain. I don’t feel as though this gains that much pep, but again, more is more when it come to power. It takes a beat to get up to power on the highway and if you’re heavier with that optional AWD system it’s only going to make things tougher.
When it comes to the rest of driving, truthfully, the Equinox doesn’t feel like a couch potato. It’s comfortable and when you put it around turns well behaved. Not as sedate as you might think.
Steering is direct and the six-speed automatic transmission knows its job and does it adequately.
The brakes are new, too, with Chevy going from a vacuum-boosted system to an electronically assisted braking set up they call E-boost.
Gas mileage estimates aren’t hand wringingly poor with the FWD only Equinox getting 26 miles in the city and 31 on the highway. Reduce those by a mile or two with power at four corners.
Other than that, there are some new paint colors, hey, this feels like it would make a great segue.
To this - the exterior. In the looks department, the Equinox isn’t ground breaking but not offensive or gives me a reason to scratch my head. It does lack a bit of individuality. Not sure I’d be able to tell what it is without the badging. What about you? I really think we should do a video like that sometime. Hey, subscribe to the KBB UA-cam channel and we might!
Cargo space looks generous - it does land mid-pack with almost 20 cu-ft behind the second row and 64 cu-ft behind the first.
But get into it and you’ll feel the comfort in both the rear and front seats.
A 7-inch touchscreen comes standard, but you can upgrade to this 8-inch version. I really like Chevy’s MyLink system, it’s quick and easy to use. But if you want to just use your phone CarPlay and Auto are standard as is Bluetooth connectivity, with on board WiFi and 4G LTE optional.
The Equinox also comes with Chevy Safety Assist. That includes stuff like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist with lane departure warnings, hey all, Chevy’s system is a smooooth operator.
The Equinox can be had in four trim levels starting with the LS ($29,595), which come standard with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and active noise cancelling. The LT ($30,695) gets you more standard features, like a power adjustable driver’s seat, body colored mirror caps and a larger drivers info screen.
The sportier looking RS ($33,695) might be the sweet spot with front and rear parking alert, power programmable liftgate, remote start, 19-inch wheels, gloss black details on the exterior and LED taillights. Still fairly reasonable but with lots of good features - though we’d get the larger screen which is optional but standard on the Premier ($34,795) and a hands-free foot gesture lift gate. You. An get other packages on those different trims that add extras like upscale seats and a massive moonroof.
More of a zhuzz than a refresh the Chevy Equinox gets a tad more power, some better breaks to go with its roomy interior and solid standard tech offerings. It’s in dealerships now if all that sounds interesting.

Let’s be honest, this is all most people need. A comfy, roomy run-about that’s good on gas. There’s a reason why Toyotas and “boring” cars sell so well. 99% of people just need an appliance to get around in. This Chevy fits the bill perfectly. Want a Porsche? Go buy one then! Meanwhile stop complaining about this type of perfectly adequate car.
People talk a lot of shit about this generation of Equinox and I’ve never been even slightly interested in them BUT my mother in law has a 2022 LT AWD. It has the remote start, power lift gate, 8 inch screen, tinted windows, heated seats, dual zone climate control, frontal warning/emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind zone monitoring, rear cross traffic alert… all of that is great but when I heard that it had a 1.5T ecotec engine, before I had ever driven or ridden in it, I literally laughed thinking about my first car, a 2006 cobalt with a 2.4 ecotec. I imagined an suv that had no power, and the engine working hard constantly. I was so wrong. The first time I drove it, I couldn’t believe how responsive the engine was. It has ample torque for climbing hills at speed without downshifting, passing on the highway and on 2 lane roads is done without even having to completely floor it. Merging onto the highway is thinkless. On top of all of that, the ride is comfortable and quiet and it handles extremely well for an suv. And with her mostly highway driving she averages 41mpg. I’m extremely impressed with this vehicle, to the point of considering a purchase.
Matter of time before it breaks down it’s a piece of shit
👍
we rented the Trax earlier this year, enough power to get around for 3 people, today's engines have more power than those 12-15 years ago, it's not like the old days with the engine struggling to get up to speed
Recently purchased a new 2023 Chevy Equinox, we we’re driving when suddenly the windshield cracked, we figured an object fell from the sky and broke it. Called insurance paid deductible, man came to replace it, he had a lot of trouble getting it out, finally learned it was not broken by a rock or similar object, when it was made there was too much glue on one side creating pressure which caused the break, after learning this I called General Motors they said because I went to a 3rd party “Safelite Autoglass” instead of going back to the dealer there was nothing they could do. Please if your warrantied car, SUV or truck developes a broken windshield, call your dealer before you call your insurance company.
Thank you
i WAS WALKING BY THE EQUINOX FROM THE BACK TO FRONT AND THOUGHT IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
This model desperately needs a refresh.
Interior for sure
Chevy is known for its bland interiors
Sadly.. this is the refresh lol
This is the refresh for the 3rd generation.
@@elijahjenkins1669 Skip right to the 5th generation.
I would love to see a group of badgeless vehicles on comparison.
But they’ve sold how many? They are everywhere’
@@tmklunkrentals and fleet cars probably.
Wow, still a traditional 6 speed auto. Refreshing.
Better than a CVT
Good to know what I'll be driving our our next family vacation 👍
Great video Lyn!
Only Lyn could make a boring vehicle sound interesting and upbeat...lol. Great video.
The words and energy brightens my day.
Coming soon to an Enterprise/Hertz/Avis fleet near you.
Nice job! ....I'm always interested in how mfg's treat the sun visor mirror lighting. Did I see a manual mirror dimmer?
The exterior design looks good to my eye, even though this model is now 6 years old, with very few visual updates. With the 2024 Equinox EV coming, I reckon this gas-powered version will be rebadged Equinox Classic (or Equinox Limited) and be produced for fleet/rental sales only.
As a gear head and the son of a late great mechanic (rip dad) I got one of these. Comfy, roomy, just enough power to get around, great gas mileage, just awesome to live with. The only thing I hate and it's on every new car, auto stop. Turn it off your starter and wallet will thank you.
She is actually very good at this!
great video Lyn. They have all become generic sadly. Bring on the Datsun 1500!
Great review thanks 👍
The Stop Start on my 2024 is 100% better than the Start Stop feature on any Subaru I have ever driven
i just bought a 2023 equinox ls and out the door at a 25000 dollars, not a bad car, but rides stiffer than my 2014 malibu, which i traded in, all and all very economical sporty SUV, mine is FWD and last fill up was impressive 31MPG, nice, will own for years, only 700 miles at time of posting, i recommend it
I was about to say. If you are happy, who cares for another brand and model.
I am thinking about the test drive and might pick one up if I walk out with a good deal.
I have the counterpart to this and there’s a reason I chose that over the equinox
which one? so i can compare it too
well done video I test drive one
The SUV is ho-hum but Mike Dangers's photography is great!
Btw, what's with Lyn's no belt look?
IDK, but those are the same pants she's worn in probably 10 different videos now.
For competitors, what about the Nissan Rogue, Mitsu Outlander, Ford Escape?
Why didn’t they redesigned the interior?
How it's service cost in Canada???
They probably went with the electronic brake booster cause they were having so many major issues with their vacuum pumps destroying the cams on the 1.5 L
What about the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Rogue?
5:21 The rear doors are so wide for nothing since there is at least 5'' lost above the wheel arch
100% not gonna feel 5 extra horsepower, but you might feel 5 more ft/lbs of torque
Used this as a Hertz rental in Nov-2023. I loved the roomy interiors, but the engine was too sluggish. It struggled while speeding up, there always was a lag b/w hitting the gas and the vehicle picking up speed. Gas mileage was poor as well. I really wanted to buy this (I've a family of 3, and need something bigger than a sedan)...but seems like this one's not for me.
Surprised they still even make this. It’s the suv version of the impala for rental fleets.
99% not gonna feel 5 extra horsepower ,
the remaining 1% is called Raiti who only has to look at the mats to feel the extra power.
Great car!
Oh my! That exterior color....I afraid to know what they call it!!!!!
I have a 2019 Equinox and I love it even though its getting long in the tooth for 2023. The new EV Equinox is coming this year and a new ICE one is coming next year.
I LOVE THIS CAR
I’d rank it on par w the RAV4 which is to say generally mediocre
I guarantee you the rav 4 is gonna be more reliable long term
@@Uknown76 but at what expense? A horrid interior, noisy cabin, poor driving dynamics, low comfort, cramped seats
@@naveenthemachine realizability matters more honestly don't want the car to be in the shop constantly
@@Uknown76No question the Rav4 is better built and will outlast the equinox but it feels like a slower and more sluggish car when accelerating even with 30 more horsepower.

They're everywhere where I am. It's hard to forget them unfortunately
@@nicholasfield6127 Yeah I seem these daily where I am too.
The Equinox people are trying. Its just difficult to please an automotive journalist when it comes to having enough horse power.
My spouse and I leased one of these and we hated it. My spouse who literally could give zero f's about a car. They just want to get them from A to B. Even said they didn't care for it.

Taking away the 2.0 turbo ruined this car
You're right about that, the turbo charger only causes excessive mechanical stress on the engine thereby shortening it's life, perhaps even the transmission, way to go GM,, used to make good cars, last of which was the 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, all downhill after that.
@@Barrie562i have a 2007 G6 one owner, 155,000 miles and it’s been very good, mechanic said it runs like the day it was made. I also have a 2018 equinox premier awd, and i like it, drives very well besides low on power
Yes. Ours should have come with the 2.0 it makes sense for this car but they just didn’t. Such a bummer because the older ones have it even on lt. With the impala they got rid of 2.5 instead of v6
Micah needs to change his last name to Muzico lol
This depressing thing just screams rental and fleet car
Man I just bought a used 2020 equinox💀. I got my first job. Looking forward to making more money and selling it and getting a nice car, a car that would suit my car enthusiastic and geek nature😎. Btw I work for chevy💀jk but I work in the field of cars

Hello chevy equinox good car?
I AM BUY CAR BUT EQUINOX OR ESCAPE? Please 🖤
1.5 liter good ? Bro equinox comfort car or no comfort?
You reviewed the GR Corolla, I guess this is the price you have to pay.
👍 color
So much hate on this suv. If you are on a tight budget it works. Not everyone has the extra 4 to 6 grand to get a comparable Rav4 or CX5, ect. My friend is getting over 32mpg on her 2020 FWD with the 1.5 engine.
At least spend the same and get a Nissan
Tight budget? That's a false economy. This thing will cost you more. When you have to have the engine replaced. And the transmission rebuilt, and electrical problems occur, and it depreciates far more than a Japanese version
@@kevinbarry71 Exactly
In 2017, my wife purchased a new Chevy Equinox LT, and it's still going strong with almost 172XXX miles-- nothing but oil changes, new tire sets, and a tune-up.
Pay these journalist in the comments section no mind lol.
Fantastic review of a mediocre vehicle. Great job Lynn!
1.5-liter turbo? Seriously?
Yup, I have a friend who has had same engine for 3.5 years, zero issues, plenty of power, good mileage, regular tranny (no CVT) and he couldn't be happier that he decided to get one. He said he could have bought a fancier car but he likes going to work everyday knowing the car is reliable.

it's cheap , it sells , win for chevy
If it was food it would be spaghetti without sauce………..
no way would i ever buy another chevrolet. They've been making cars for more than 100 years and they still cant get it right.
Man Chevy vehicles are so uninspired. How the hell are they intending to compete with Hyundai and Kia if their lineup keeps looking so boring? Even Toyota is making edgy looking cars these days!
Have you checked out the new Trailblazer, Trax and Blazer? They’re super great looking and unique looking
toyota makes the horrbile looking 4runner and sienna 2 of the ugliest cars ever
Easy. Selling a car that can’t be stolen by TikTokers and that aren’t desirable to catalytic converter stealing bums. That’s how.
Kias are so unreliable it’s pathetic
l could identify the vehicles quite easily without badging.
if this were the only review ever made for the equinox its sales wouldnt been...dang! y bother reviewing a half decade old vehicle with no significant changes to it?
even worse, y put all that money into adding only 5 horses? bad move gm.
The car so boring that you don’t even finish watching the video and quit 😢
"Adequate" , "Not hand wringingly poor", "not super remarkable", "not super offensive".... Remind me to not have this lady help write my marriage vows.
Even with a mild refresh, this looks dated; I'm curious about who this Suv is marketed for?
Chevy is known for its inoffensive interiors so they can appeal to all. It’s the same with the traverse.
@@DeadAir21 The new Colorado, Silverado, and Blazer have lovely interiors. The Equinox is just adequate, with an attractive price point.
People who don't care about their cars. They are everywhere where I live unfortunately
@@nicholasfield6127 Where I work we have 4 in our fleet. Although the Rav-4 is the one the supervisor prefers. The Tacoma is my second choice depending on the route I'm driving for the night.

I used to drive a Chevy Equinox - it was a piece of trash from day one. It had a myriad of issues: excessive oil consumption, 2 catalytic converter replacements, numerous oxygen pump replacements, and the list goes on. Mind you I try to take good car of my cars and provide regular scheduled maintenance as recommended by Chevy. If you are thinking of buying an Equinox, do your research. This model, along with other Chevy and GM crossover models have had a lot of engine issues in the past. They might be considerably cheaper than the competition, but there is a high price to pay in the long run.
What model year was your Equinox?
@@aamirqz 2011. Those problems were prevalent up until 2017 models. I don’t know if they had the same issues post 2017, but my mechanic still does not recommend Chevy crossovers or sedans to this day. I can’t speak the same of their trucks though. Some people swear by them. I personally do not trust Chevy - I wouldn’t buy one anytime soon. Perhaps in the future if their quality and reliability improves I might think twice.
Yea those previous 2.4 gm eco tec engines had piston ring issues, which causes excessive oil consumption. And when GM first released the 1.5 turbo it had some piston issues as well. But since 2018 the equinox has been a a much more reliable vehicle. Expect 150k -200k miles before you have to replace a major component
@@justusangel814 This is good to hear... I am thinking of adding the Equinox 1.5T FWD to my short list of vehicles to consider this year.
@@Rubenlf619 I own a 2015 Chevy Silverado with 120000 miles with zero issues. Do you know if the LT1 motor is a lemmon? Should I sell my truck quickly and buy a Tundra?
