I experienced a very similar problem with Garuda Linux suddenly hanging in a VM and requiring a hard reset, multiple times. I'm not at all a Linux expert, but I did try to look in a few log files that I could find (I'm sure there are logs and other diagnostic tools that I'm not aware of) and I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Then, on a hunch, I switched to the standard kernel from the Zen kernel, which Garuda uses by default, and I haven't had that problem since. The Garuda developers warn on their web site and in their forums that their distribution is only meant to be installed directly on hardware and that using it in a VM is not supported. My guess is their use of the Zen kernel is a big part of the reason for that being the case.
