I am very much on the left. Me and my wife saw Rory Stewart in 2009 or 2010 at the Hay Festival in a talk in a small tent chaired by Jon Snow. It was very good and he came across as highly intelligent and interesting. He was wearing a very stylish ( and seemingly expensive) jacket which I think he said he got in Paris, if memory serves me rightly. Prior to this we had not heard of him but he has continued to impress with his interviews on a range of topics in the years since. I would no doubt disagree with him on a number of issues but the ability of politicians on both sides to be able to engage with each other in civilised discussion as exemplified by Rory Stewart is important to democracy and public life.
He is positive about Theresa May; she cut police numbers disastrously under austerity as Home Secretary and oversaw the hostile environment policy to immigration, both unacceptable. The Guardian has published a timeline of the policy. Even Johnson when Mayor of London called for an amnesty for illegal immigrants, recognising their contribution to the economy.

We created him. It's down to us to change things. It can't be a top down effort, because the top tolerated him because he gives them what they really want. And at the bottom, they're still grateful that he actually paid any attention to them at all. And that's the crunch. You have a distant, disconnected and entitled government, who pay more attention to their corporatesnd oligarchic donors than to voters, and who indulge in corrupt practices. And unless your vision of democracy evolves solutions to that, it's going to just get worse. We need to look at things differently. We need to strive at least to return to being a responsive democracy, where the public truly are the major stakeholders in this enterprise, instead of marks to be grifted by the grifters in Westminster. I'm afraid that people are being pushed into more extreme positions to have an effect.

Interesting (and surprising) that the Australian experience has penetrated the consciousness of UK politics. In principle Boris' behaviour is very close to that of the recently departed Australian Prime Minister who was crucified in our election a week ago. The conservatives here has also backed themselves into a corner where only the extremists were acceptable to the leadership. And look at the result. They lost the most conservative of conservative seats all over the contry.
In recent commentary by Dr Fiona Hill (Russia advisor to 3 US Presidents), she said the thing she found most surprising was that those in power did not put the good of the country ahead of their own interests, especially so in Trump's case. We have to not be naive in this but aware of it and see it for what it is. But what we can ask for is consistency and some degree of principle. Ain't seen any of that from Boris.

when the election is so far out it is seen as unwise to start announcing the policies you intend to centre your election campaign around.
      A) things change. and those changes will effect (possibly all) important aspects of one or more of your policies
      B) don't allow the other party any more time than you have to, for them to effectively run a scare campaign against your policies or time to steal them and run as there own .
      C) people forget quite quickly and also are subject to propaganda/bias in the news media which may well mangle your message in their mind , esp true in the UK news media which is 95% tory supporting.
seems best to flood the electorate (esp the marginal seats that you could/might win) with a easily digestible , consistent and relevant message for a month or two in lead up to election day.

I wouldn't vote for him, though I'd say the country would be in far better hands under people like him than the hard-brexiteer, right-wing, American-style, free market-fundamentalists who have completely taken over the Conservative party. Maybe he appeals to people as well because he reminds them of their Dad. He does for me. Come back blue green Rory - the UK needs you! There is a complete moral vacuum in politics at the moment.🙏🏽

I like Rory Stewart very much, but he’s too cerebral and (ironically, given the cabinet) too posh to be a party leader or mayor.
The Tory MPs chose Johnson over him and I think the party would have as well.
I would love to see him back in frontline politics though

we need Rory back and as Prime Minister and Tobias Ellwood as his Deputy. then decency and justice will prevail.

I could never vote tory but if its a choice between Rory or kier then that would be a easy choice! I think Rory should run again as I believe he is a genuine mp.
