I never leave comments unless I’m supremely impressed. Your information was superlatively delivered! I now plan on keeping shrimp!😀 Thank you! Fareeza.
I just started learning about these shrimp and I soooooooo want some. Thank you for the info! I just found your channel and have been devouring it. Whoohoo!
You rock! I've recently discovered your channel and look forward to watching your videos everyday when I get home. Thank you SO much or sharing your wealth of knowledge and time to make these videos! You make the hobby, and the world a better place!! =D
I love watching your videos and wanted to share my excitement about having baby shrimp of my own (completely unintentional). They are absolutely fascinating to watch and I wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge as it truly helps people like myself.
See now, at 9:05 when the blue rili were being shown on the right side was the coolest shrimp brown/reddish carapace.... Cool one! About 6 years ago I got my first colony of 20 some odd cherries. They quickly grew into a few hundred, the promptly crashed to less than 20 and eventually to one. She (big red) was the one that bred with one of the culls I got from you back when, I think early 2013. Chocolate culls. They have given me so much pleasure watching the colors. I have brought back the cherry line as well as the chocolate. But honestly I have more fun watching the cool colors. Anything from different color rili looking to clear, blue with red "hat" and a splash of red on the tail. It's fun! I think they number close to 500 shrimp now. I will cull from the Bloody Mary colony, chocolate and cherry into the "mess/mix." For the little investment well worth the return in enjoyment.
This video is perfect! haha I was recently reading about all the different colours of shrimp and became confused about they being one species or several. Most people couldn't tell me either. Thanks!
Hi Rachel, from Paris. I have my red cherry shrimp with no mixing for 10 years in my 200l tank. What i have notices ? The first years, i had only red, and translucent. After 2 years, One day a yellow gold appeared. Then came dark, grey, pink, orange, yellow, and green. And somehow a white translucent then a blue came a half black came half red/blue. And today after 10 years in 2016 i have all of your Colors shrimps in my tank. The conclusion ! In the wild neocaridina are grey or green and breed like ours cats it´s always a surprise.
Bonjour! I have had similar experience over the years as well. What I am not sure of, is which shrimp were mixed before I got them. This is one reason I find it to be so important to maintain separate colonies. All too often I see folks mixing their neocaridina shrimp, only to sell offspring as a particular color, when they can carry the genetics of many. You are correct, in the wild it is a wide array of potential colors, which has what made it possible for us to isolate out so many beautiful strains. To be clear, I don't have issue with folks mixing, as long as they are transparent about it should they decide to share them with other hobbyists later.
+Rachel O'leary salut ! Thank you for the adevices i'm glad that you had the same result ! Because people use to tell me that i certainly put some new shrimps or how did i get this new color shrimp. And i use to tell them it comes from the god of shrimps or i said to them it s because of the timber leaves that i feed them. In fact i do nothing but i have notice that in 10 years guppy and shrimps evolved really closely. I love your vidéo very good explanations. Keep going !!! Show us some more good spécimens. Bisou
I'm working on setting up a low tech, dirted, planted nano tank with shrimp at the moment. This video could not have come at a better time! I love the look of those Rili shrimp.
This cleared so much confusion up for me. It has to be the single best video I have seen on this topic, with the exception of a two hour lecture on shrimp genetics that I just watched, but I am wondering if a video explaining which ones can be housed together that won't breed and an explanation of why it is some do and some don't, could be done? I am sure I could find another long lecture or book on the topic, but I am looking for just a succinct answer to start with before I move on to more complex explanations, which you seem to be incredibly good at in your videos. You seem to be the absolute best intro-to-any-topic-aquarium resource online.
Already several of my friends are requesting me to tag the video to my FB wall so they can find it. Apparently I am not the only one interested in the topic. Lol. I will be sure to redirect them to your actual channel so they can like and subscribe.

When I decided to get back into breeding fish I didn't know that I was going to pick up am interest in shrimp. But now that I'm getting my fish room together I have been trying to work in places for shrimp colonies. They are becoming a lot of fun now that I stopped cooking them in too warm of a tank!
Thank you for making sense of shrimp keeping; now I can move forward from my cherry shrimp to other colour formation and have at least an idea what I am doing.
Thank you so much for this information. I'm at the stage where I've got the most beautiful colors of all types in my tank, now I know I've got to get the ones I like separated out before I'm stuck with greenish.
Just getting started with shrimp and my mind is blown... I have two 10Gal tanks. One have blue dreams the other has yellow gold backs. I also have a 29 Gal with cherry . Out of the 13 tanks in my bedroom these three shrimp tanks have me the most captivated.
Thanks for the clarification about the two different neocaridina subspecies. i got a rainbow mix and the first batch of babies came out with pretty normal stuff, reds and yellows and so on, but the second batch after i got a couple male snowballs, gave me some brown wild types. now i know why!
Great video, thanks for the information. I have a question though, before I jump in. I have a 10G tank just for shrimp ready to go. BUT, my question being, because they have a tiny bioload..how do you keep the water/sponge filter cycled? Or even get a tank cycled from scratch with just a sponge filter(without ceramic media/charcoal)? Thanks again!
My understanding is that Bloody Mary shrimp actually came from chocolates and that, unlike cherry shrimp, their tissues are red rather than their shells. Thoughts on that?
Hi Rachel. Do you have a book out or plan to write one? You have such vast knowlege of the hobby. Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share.
I have a Question ....So if i wanna try breeding blues and yellows together....i would get that darker brown coloration? Or what would the offspring look like?
i bought some assorted shrimp last week and i noticed today one is carrying a bunch of eggs! i bought some from petsmart before and had no luck and they died off. the ones i have now have their own tank with some guppy. im super excited to see how theyll turn out! 7
I might just try to get some Blue shrimp, as I have Orange and Red shrimp. But I think the blue against the black substrate will look good. Love your informative videos Rachel.
I've got some blues right now on black sand and I gotta say im not really in love with it. Sure they look great, but they really dont stand out at all. You actually have to really look close to find them most of the time. I'm gonna be moving them to some pool filter sand soon and see how they look on that, as i just got some black rose shrimp and put them on white sand and I'm absolutely in love with them and how they stand out on the sand.
i'm new to the hobby and interested in keeping a lovely scaped and planted shrimp tank. one thing that's kind of overwhelming to me is the chemistry involved in testing, keeping the water clean, and balancing ph, kh, tds, etc. i'm unsure where to go to find testing supplies and also unsure of what to look for to see if my water is safe. it's a kind of overwhelming place to start but any advice for a first step?
+Violet Keene I thibk hardness is most relevant to shrimp. A liquid hardness (gh/kh) test kit is very inexpensive. Thr master liquid kit is a good idea for making sure your tank is cycled and staying consistent, my measuring ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Strips are usable, but not as accurate. The key with shrimp is stability
I bought 5 blue velvet shrimp from my local pet store. 3 died after a week, but now 3 weeks later 2 survived and I have babies. But the babies aren't blue! I found 3 yellow and 1 red. It sounds like this is normal. Do you think I can get blues with what I have or should I get more blues and try again?
Perfect timing on this video as I'm in the process of setting up a few shrimp only tanks, thanks for the great info, I really enjoy your videos ! Curious if you have had any experience with the dwarf crayfish at all ? Would love to see a video from you on those in the future if you have.
I really want to buy some shrimp, but every where I look online is super expensive. I don't have any fish stores anywhere close to me, so I have to order online, but I don't have the money to by online. Where is a place I could get cheap ones? I just want 1 blue male 1 blue female and then I'll breed them.
Hi I have 20 gal Red Cherry Shrimp colony. The tank has plant cover. However to my question. I had this colony for about 8 months now. I recently noticed a yellow shrimp. About 1/2" long. I have looked for others no luck as of today. What are the chances of getting more ? Or is this just a one throwback?
gav may I have a ten gallon tall with about 10-12cpds and 4 blue Moscow guppies. Then one of my ten shrimps had babies. I have a mass of java moss in the corner where at least 10 or more of the babies have grown up. I have drift wood and other bushy plants for hiding/grazing, all I did was feed the fish enough flake food to keep them from digging around the plants or moss for more food.
gav may make sure it's thick and had lots of room for just the shrimps to go in to. I was freaking out when I saw that the babies were just out there with the fish.
thanks. nice vid. i have 4 shrimp in my tank. I bought 3 but about a week later i noticed some babies swimming around. I didnt know they were going to have babies already and i messed up and moved 3 babies to a 1 gallon tank. i think the quick change messed that up. but wasnt expecting any young ones. i did have 3 others that i left in my 10 gallon with the other 3 big ones. i had 1 big one get out because i found it. It had to climb the filter because i have tape covering other tubes and spots. then guessing another one got out or died. hadnt seen it in awhile. i keep them in a 10 gallon with some guppies and babies. when the babies are bigger they go to my 55 gallon. hoping to do that with the shrimp one day. my babies are now over half an inch so hoping i got lucky and have a pair in the there.
Mohd Imtiyaz smaller amounts less frequently eg 10% every 10 days vs 25% every 7 days. Have seen some guys with heavily planted tanks to deal with the nitrates do it with 0 filtering
I work at a lfs that sells the 👻 shrimp and we are having kids coming in to use them for ecosphere projects and putting them in .25gallon tanks with mossballs it doesnt sit right with me since i know shrimp are very sensitive critters and they arent even conditioning the water either. I told my boss but he doesnt care since theyre just feeder shrimp which i get it theyre meant to be eaten im cool with that but idk i always wonder whats gonna happen after the school projects over what just toss them out let them sit and die from slow ammonia build up since moss balls take lil nutrients up, their teachers said to get a min. of 5 shrimp most end up getting 10+ despite my efforts to talk them down. Am i being over dramatic or what? Opinions?
I recently got some blue velvet shrimp. But I found a chocolate shrimp in the mix. I though ain't trying to get it out but my hardscape makes it hard. So I am wondering if these two will interbreed and ruin my blue velvet line. Thank you and love your video. ;)
Good Question. im wondering the same thing because i would like to do the same. I heard that they all have different water parameters so its hard to keep them together but if theyre all from the same shrimp then i dont think its that big of a deal.... im gonna try it anyway , i found that that the best way to learn something in the fish tank world is trial and error so we will see. i suggest you do the same .
I have a question for you! I have berried shrimp and my tank is getting algae which i want less of. Could i put a snail in there and would the baby shrimp be harmed?
What happens if you breed something like a red S grade with a blue S grade? I have these type and always wondered if I should try breeding a few together.
Rachel, Just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate your quick and helpful resources... I know from you videos that you are a busy person but you still find the time to respond to questions with curate and helpful resources... Thank you.
That was the best explanation of shrimp species, line breeding and how various colors are achieved that I have ever heard. Thank you!
I really love your fish and shrimp Rachel!
I love the room!
Thumbs up!

Thank you Rachel, you are great at explaining in details. Pleasure to see someone so enthusiastic and passionate about shrimps.
it is a delicate balance between me geeking too much and keeping it short and sweet- I do my best! Lol

Is it ok to have them in a 5 gallon tank?
I'm working on setting up a low tech, dirted, planted nano tank with shrimp at the moment. This video could not have come at a better time! I love the look of those Rili shrimp.
Big ups for the informative video, Rachel! I do the plop-n-drop for my shrimp after watching your other video on shrimp keeping.
Your video was awesome and extremely informative! You answered all of my questions I was pondering about regarding Neocaridina Davidi. THANK YOU!!!
Glad it helped!

I have a blue shrimp and it was floating this morning but I’ve got lots of lovely little baby ones and they grow well
I am going home. I am hearing enough for bio class today. Damn it, awesome content

Nice video Rachel !
i subbed!
What fish would you recommend with cherry shrimp. I was thinking celestial pearl danios, would neons work?
+SWOLE MICKEY cpd have a strong prey drive, I prefer Boraras with them
Ok thanks

Hi Rachel can I keep shrimp with black harlequin rasbora's?

Hello everyone, I have a quick question, would it be safe, to feed these Shrimp 🦐 to a African Sideneck Turtle? 🐢 Please let me know. Thanks!
beautifil shrimps!
Hi,is it correct shrimp tank no need to waterchange frequently? Some say once a month better
Mohd Imtiyaz smaller amounts less frequently eg 10% every 10 days vs 25% every 7 days. Have seen some guys with heavily planted tanks to deal with the nitrates do it with 0 filtering
Woah my head is spinning! :P
This totally reminds me of breeding leopard geckos!Lol
Excellent explanation.
I removed the wild clear type for awhile now finally see I'm starting to see they having cherry baby.

Oh ok thank you so much
Will having red reli and blue reli in the same tank cause the colors to mix and mute?
what kind of shrimp can u mix together. i would love a mixed shrimp tank

Have crazy colour morphs ever been bred for size? or are there breeds of larger equally colourful shrimp?
larger shrimp generally have claws which makes them aggresssive to not only each other, but fish- though they are still fascinating and fun to keep
Very educational!
I have a question for you! I have berried shrimp and my tank is getting algae which i want less of. Could i put a snail in there and would the baby shrimp be harmed?
+CastingandRetrieving nerite snail will be fine
Thank You!!
Hey Rachel, i see nerite snails in a lot of your tanks, do you breed em yourself? If you do i would love a video about it!
+dnainsomnia84 I do not
very interesting!!!! thanks for the info!
Can you make a video on keeping shrimps and fish together?
Got some red cherry berried with yellow eggs and another with green eggs .... what should I expect when they hatch
a whole bunch of normal cherry shrimp :) Either color is considered to be totally normal
i looveee you so much !!!!
What happens if you breed something like a red S grade with a blue S grade? I have these type and always wondered if I should try breeding a few together.
I would like to see the results of that myself. If you do it I would watch your video!!
Wow your the best.
are you going to aquatic experience in Schaumburg this year???
+Michael Morris yep!
that was great info. thanks.
Nice
Rachel, would you say that genetaly the Neocaridina are easier to keep then the Caridina?
+Opher Caspi yes, more flexible for sure
Rachel, Just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate your quick and helpful resources... I know from you videos that you are a busy person but you still find the time to respond to questions with curate and helpful resources... Thank you.
+Opher Caspi my pleasure
are red crystal the same species with red cherry shrimp?
do you have any experience keeping Hawaiian red shrimp "Halocaridina Rubra"?
rurutu M I have been keeping those for the past 12 years or so. Marvelously easy!
Do yellow shrimp breed with blue velvet shrimp?
+Anash Uddin yes
+Anash Uddin yes
Oh thanks for the info.
What does it look like a combination of the two colors or does some look like the mom or dad?
+UnknownContact1 some look ie the parents but most end up clearish
I can keep everything but neocaridina shrimp 😪 always end up killing them somehow
What are those white worms crawling across the glass
11:10 i like those 0.o
Do you sell shirmp? Let me know.
Why are some of my glass shrimp’s guts red and some green??
depends on what htye are eating
How long is the average lifespan of a shrimp?
+rabbitphobia 18-24 months
Thank you for the reply, you just earnt a new sub... ;)
cute
can most shrimp cross breed? say amino and cherry?
+Name Unavailable. Amano cannot
Rachel O'leary. with anything? I have Amano shrimp and was wondering what I could mix into the line.

You should not cull shrimp just for being the un preferred colour just move them to a separate tank or sell them

Rachel O'leary wait you cull them?
+#Gdog 360 no scope I pull lesser quality from my main colony and move them to a mixed tank. They are then sold as culls. I don't kill them
