Based on quick research: "For a job, the required education and skills might be minimal and specific to the tasks at hand, allowing for quick entry into the workforce without extensive training. However, higher education, specialized training, and continuous skill development are often essential for a career, as they lay the foundation for long-term growth, advancement, and the ability to take on increasingly complex roles within a chosen field." One of my biggest pet peeves is that huns mistake a job for a career and are unhappy because they are working a job, not a career. I hope I am making sense :)

@@SaraSG1 That's what I thought, too - the only place I'd heard "secretary" for years was "legal secretary."

Whenever I see women like this I always immediately think “WHERE ARE THEIR HUSBANDS??” She’s talking about how exhausted she is and how she was barely handling being a mother and a wife. And that’s absolutely understandable, being a mother and a full time employee is exhausting. You’re telling me your husband wouldn’t do some cooking? Some laundry? Aren’t you supposed to be partners?? It’s just another manifestation of how the patriarchy leads to these sorts of scams and how they target women specifically. I worked in a chiro office and had a similar experince. It was family owned so they didn't wanna hire more people so I was doing patient intakes, pulling up insurance, pulling medical records, putting people in CBP, assisting with X-Rays (eventually to be trained to take them as well), and all the normal secretary stuff. It sucked and burned me out so quickly that I quit less than a year in.
PS: I'm not saying a chiro assistant is = to a PTA. And I'm not gonna debate the validity of chiropractic care, I was literally just there for a paycheck & location wise it couldn't be beat.

Most couples (forget even having kids yet) need a dual income to keep a roof over their heads these days. If you're the average young couple starting a family, it's not getting any easier. Working from home is one way to afford it in their eyes, I spose. It is a full time job to be a parent, period. If you're working, you're working, but they can work while keeping an eye on their kids. I just don't know why they have to sugar coat it, tho. Go big or go home.

Your comments about "building a business" while being a "stay at home mom" are spot-on. I've been a SAHM for 8 years and now that my kids are in school full-time, I'm working on setting up a freelance business as a copyeditor. On paper, I have 7 hours a day to work on my business, yet somehow that time shrinks so quickly because I'm also still doing many of the household activities and school runs and cooking, etc. because my husband has a demanding job. If my kids were home full-time there's no way in hell I could be setting up this business without completely neglecting the house or kids or my own sanity (or all three). I hate that they shame moms with very young kids for not being "girl bosses" at the same time. It's hard as hell to just keep your kids clean and fed and happy!

If her clinic was small, then she may have been doing the front office work too. We have a dedicated secretary/front office person who does billing/scheduling, etc. Our main clinic has 5-6 secretaries, so it can be overwhelming plus if she was trying to see patients as well.

might be a Canadian field, but a physiotherapist assistant is a career. Requires a specific diploma and to pass clinical exams. It’s definitely the lower end of the health field payscale, but still decent wage and still actually in the health field. It’s not super normal to also be the secretary or front desk person at the practice from my knowledge but I can see it being expected/accepted at smaller practices where the office duties would be minimal. The health field has many smaller careers so I don’t blame you for not having heard of this.

    Canadian here:
income taxes are super high here, way higher than the US. We do also pay into EI. I’m basically middle class and about 25-30% of my pay is deducted for taxes, EI and CPP (Canada pension plan).
Regarding shutdowns: We were originally told 2 weeks but most shut down much longer. However, anyone that was laid off, or even had their pay cut due to hours being cut, was eligible for “CERB” (Canada emergency response benefit) which was $2000/mth. The government immediately approved anyone that applied and it wasn’t taxed at the time (did have to pay on it when taxes were filed). This was to try to make sure everyone could stay on top of their bills as much as possible. The government eventually did an audit and asked for the money back from people that didn’t have their pay impacted by shutdowns.

I'm a physiotherapy assistant (PTA) in a clinic in Canada. PTA's assist the physio in completing the treatment they prescribe to people. We apply physical treatment like ultrasounds, muscle stimulation, physical traction, among other things. We also help teach people how to safely do their exercises at home. We are usually responsible for equipment up keep and cleaning, having laundry done, ordering treatment related product, etc. Most places have you run reception outside regular clinic hours or have you work part time reception. It can pan out into a well paying career IF you get into the hospitals or really nice, high end clinics. Otherwise, due to no regulation in our field, we don't get paid well often. Barely a livable wage if that in a lot of cases. I went to school for 2 years and it was still difficult to get a job with benefits. It's tough out here so I'm not surprised a fellow Canadian PTA was sucked in by Monat. I love my job but I know one day I will have to go back to school for a better career.

They treat patients and can do everything physical therapist can do except evaluate, reassess, and perform discharges they have to have our order signed by a physical therapist. Just like a physician assistant has to have things approved by the MD/DO, same with the PTA. They are in the medical field, it can be a career I know many career physical therapist assistance instead of doing it, 40 years. You can be a clinical rehab Director, you can work in insurance, you can work clinically in all types of health facilities like hospitals, outpatient, pediatrics, home health, the list goes on and on and on. It is very common in a clinic setting for assistants to be doing a lot of additional admin, laundry, cleaning, and other non-patient care duties. This is especially true for smaller, private practice clinics that may not have proper admin staff. Additionally, clinics typically don’t pay well either approx $17-20/hr (minimum wage in Ontario is $16.55) for a career that requires a 2 year diploma. I’d be willing to bet she was burnt out, underpaid and looking for a way out

When someone already has a hobby that is enjoyable, they will be less likely to have no issues with what a huge time sink this is. 31:46 I’ve thought the same thing! It’s a hook to keep them in because if they earn all the smart start bonuses it’s decent but once you’re no longer in that period, it drops off right off

Idk about Canada, but the US has multiple levels for Physical Therapists. The ones I've worked around are DPT (doctor), PT, PT Assistant. There are others but idk if theyre common (i.e. Certified Exercise Specialist, PT Aide, Athletic Trainer). It's my understanding that PTAs are kind of halfway between an MA and a PA in terms what they can do. But regardless of licensing, if she was working the front desk I don't see how she would have time to treat patients. ofc she's the only one who knows for certain 🤷🏻

It's similar in Canada. The only way I can think she'd be doing front desk stuff is if it was just her and the PT. She should've just looked to work at a different clinic.

Side note- I do think being a receptionist in the medical field is a career. Usually there is training that goes with it

Also, when the first quarantine period was in effect really by most in Canada it was seen as a two week holiday.
