    Yeah this is insane...
    I had gone for a different color and materials palette but in essence, this is what I want too. Nothing excessive or pretentious. I dig it.
    I had done a little wind generator, maybe, and you could definitely have a second tank higher up and use the excess electricity on good days to pump water up and then have a gravity fed system. Bit more pricey but it'd act like a gravity battery. A little wood fired oven/cook top combo would give you that extra level of resiliency if the lights did go out one day (could be easily hidden in a corner or in a bult in or something like that to not spoil the vibes). Just have a pile of wood ready in the garage.
    Love the Konstantin Grcic bar stools. Very nice.
    Again, awesome build. Very very cool...

    • @snowstrobe
      @snowstrobe 11 місяців тому +2

      Was my thoughts too... A wind turbine (VAWTS are silent) would probably ensure plenty of power. And a gravity fed water-tank would be more efficient use of pumps.

      @dancarter482 11 місяців тому

      The whole _Off Grid_ thing is utter nonsense anyway - they're not growing all their food up there so carrying some propane up on one of the many provisioning excursions would be well within scope! Firewood needs an entire infrastructure too, even IF they were processing it all on site - which they aren't capable of!

    • @mysterioanonymous3206
      @mysterioanonymous3206 11 місяців тому +1

      @@dancarter482 I think you confuse total self sustainment with being off grid. Grid is only referring to the electrical grid - nothing more.
      I think we'd all agree that a modern lifestyle is only possible in a networked, connected world, be it internet or medical care, but in Hawaii they do have electricity outages and being somewhat self sustained, say for a week or two or even a month is a very valid concern. Also, they just don't get public utilities there (sewage, drinking water, gas, and obv grid electricity, trash collection, that sort of thing). You simply have to be self sustained to a certain degree if you want to live there.
      Also, islands are notoriously expensive to supply so solar and such can make financial sense too in many cases.

    You can see the growing trend to hide the kitchen. Back in the day, kitchens had their own rooms out of sight from the guests. Then came the great room trend, displaying the kitchen as the centerpiece for entertainment. Now people want to hide it. I bet future designs will have separate kitchen rooms again. After all, practical kitchens are to prepare food with clutter everywhere, not for display.

      @@slynn5138 Having your kitchen in your living room, as is the style of today is absolutely nonsensical. They are two very different rooms with different functions. Having lived in Hawaii for a bit.
    The place seems very remote, most of the days you want a coffee or a workout or the beach.
    It is like the place I used to be at. It looks like it takes 30+ minutes for that.
    As far as privacy, it looks non-existent, at least the place I was at was separated. In laws, guests, Ohana.
    There is no pool, there is no hot tub. I mean those are the things you need unless you want to spend the 30+ minutes down the hill or more.....
    I don't see an herb garden from the catching of the rain of similar.
    I do love the "wide" roof which is nice as it covers more.
    I'd probably set up something to close the Atrium from the elements he mentioned.
    All in all this is prime video stuff as you can easily decide if it is worth your $$ to buy
    or what you would change.

    Cool 😎😎😎 House but in my opinion one major flaw is what appears to be rubber "flat" roof with lots and lots of seams to it when the roof was shown - nope! Long term see lots of problems and lots of expense with that. Better solution is steel with pitch to it so that when it rains the water heads straight toward the eaves. If done correctly would work out much better for the long term with far less expense/maintenance plus during severe weather would more than likely withstand more than a rubber roof with all those seams to it. Everywhere there is seam there is the potential for a "break point" - no thanks.

    The problem with all these dream apocalypse scenarios is all the tech is data driven and so in any honest rendition of a future information blackout none of these things one relies on to be truly off-grid are going to be very functional for very long without the backend running them etc. People like to think all that matters is their energy storage but the truth is none of these technologies are built to be repaired or worked on etc. Imagine for a second what kind of havoc would be caused from a virus attack on not only the power management systems, say, like the batteries but also the vehicles etc. Anyhow it would be nice if someone could address these ideas from a systems perspective rather than feed back into the popular image of a "utopian island" of steady-state harmony. The latter is just silly.

    I think I'd want some insect screens :p Would be really cool with a green roof so it just blended it to an extent and would help maybe slow down the water too. Cool house though, as an amateur astronomer I'd be happy..

    Really great design. Needs more organic surfaces and tons more houseplants but overall the design and execution seemed really expert.

    Fantastic video. I'm hoping for a super-efficient home that "could be" off-grid if needed. What were the refrigerators they had? Where can you get those?

    • @XboxTheBeatboxer
      @XboxTheBeatboxer 11 місяців тому

      Sub Zero brand. They are pricey, but each fridge is individually tested at the factory. There’s videos on it.

      @@XboxTheBeatboxer The person talking claimed that the cold air stayed in, even though they were pull-outs. I'll take a second look at that part of the video, but would you think that is an accurate statement? I pullout would be nice since you can use the counter space right above that spot.

      @@alansnyder8448 Not 100% accurate - the cold in the food compartment stays but the air in the cavity rolls out like any normal unit. If you want high efficiency then get a chest deep freeze and turn it to lowest setting. You can accidentally leave a chest freezer OPEN for a few days and it still stays cold. (blushes) The drawers are certainly more efficient than most standard units - but not by enough to make a huge difference. I would still rather have a traditional unit with ice and water dispensers though.
      Running the induction Hob for an hour will burn more power than a standard fridge does in a whole day.
      They put the drawers in for ascetics, not for practicality. Those double drawer units are $5K each. To each their own...

    I tried a drinking game where every time one of you said “right” at the end of a sentence I drank.. didn’t make it 5 minutes in before I passed out. LOL. I could spend months up there.
