The following comes from a mission statement that appeared in the inaugural issue of SPIN. It means as much to this current staff as it did to the original writers and editors.
A confession: SPIN is imperfect. It’s rough-edged, restless, insatiably curious. A little aggressive, a little cocky. Youthfully uncompromising, but maturely flexible. Romantic - definitely! Irreverent - sure! Unpredictable - yes. Very alive.

I nevernever realized just how much reverb was even in the verse.
Yeah the vocals are definitely pretty processed on that album, you can hear delays reverbs and a lot of compression in different parts
Not much reverb at all?
lots of vocal doubling too on nevermind
Multiple vocal tracks
Kurt disagreed with it and didn’t like it at first, but they ended up talking him into it and it’s now said that’s part of the reason the album blew up like it did
Can’t really describe how much I love Kurt cobain’s voice.
Give it a go.
There will never be anyone like kurt ever again!!
lol
@@CrazyhorseDK what
I’ll be like him
Thank god!
Except for me
Yelling just came so naturally to him. He was angry and he could express it in a way no one else could. Singing loudly/yelling is pretty hard to do. And to top it off his lyrics were so good. He wasn’t even using proper technique either.
It didn’t actually come naturally. It tore his vocals chords up and he suffered a lot of pain as a result. I don’t believe he ever learnt how to sing from his diaphragm or from his gut. But it definitely gave us that raw sound that he did so well, albeit it did affect him physically.
PS I just read you wrote that he wasn’t using a proper/professional technique. So we are saying the same thing. Haha sorry!
Him not singing properly means that he would have sounded terrible if he had lived longer.
@@Bye_Good are you saying that he sings this without using diaphragm?
@@spx730 basically just all throat this is why he would cough up blood on top of having problems wit his stomach
listening to this while tripping, i really felt him. he poured himself into his music and he is a legend. i hope he rests well & lives on. we love you kurt.
Cool
🕊️
used to listen to a lot of nirvana on xans. had no clue it was even him till recently. gone way too soon.
Wow so cool tripping
If you have to listen to music while high or tripping you are a idiot. Just say NO to drugs, or you might end up like Kurt Cobain.
Kurt hated the vocal double tracking but Butch Vig talked him into keeping it.
I love the sound of it, and the reverb. I won't say the doubling was necessary for anything though, but maybe it was for clarity due to the thrashing instruments.
Isn't there a video where Butch Vig convinced him by saying that John Lennon also used to do this in his songs, and Kurt Cobain being a John Lennon fan, agreed to it?
@@jorgeespinosa5654 yes
I was going to say, shout out to Butch Vig on this masterful recording.
The album was heavily produced. You can get a sense of what Kurt thought of Nevermind’s production by listening to In Utero… But I love them both.
sounds like an Angel...love you kurt

I love that "and to pretend" part so much for some reason
Because you like to pretend?
@@watamatafoyu yes because it's the more comfortable alternative instead of facing the crude reality and accepting the fact that she doesn't like me back
@@classy_902I feel ya there man
Kurt’s voice is truly one of a kind, it’s so perfect to me🖤🎸
He sang great on albums, not live unfortunately.
@@watamatafoyu bro he never skipped the Bb4s of teen spirit, Freddie Mercury was skipping those Bb4s in his songs often, so fck that statement, Cobain was a great live singer
@@watamatafoyu you should watch their MTV unplugged it’s insane how good it is

this is so beautiful, his voice alone is so peaceful
So beautiful, being isolated like this you can hear the pain in his voice pretty well
His vocals were an unparalleled instrument.
So underrated with his vocals, seriously one of the best vocals of all time. Not many can carry and deliver raw emotion like this. Very few.
❤
Shaun Morgan and Wes Scantlin though.....
Chester Bennington
Axl Rose bro…

He makes it sound so easy to sing like that! That band had it all! Awesome bass lines ! Heavy drums and insane guitar riffs!
I love Nirvana but insane guitar riffs? Mate it's algood power chords, calm down
@@haydenskipworth6605 its all easy drums bass an guitar but its hard to make sobgs that are easy to play and sounds awesome so gotta respect 🫡
He destroyed himself to sing like that.
@@mrwolfe0812 it is theorized his voice was in such bad shape at the end. Because he sang like that. It was so raw from lives
@@wango556 so he didn't sound good near the end is what you're saying?
No one could sing like Kurt could. His voice made his lyrics more powerful.
Layne Stanley has entered the room ...
went by his childhood house in Aberdeen today.
Passed that in my way through Aberdeen to go to the beach a few years ago. Went to a Dairy Queen there and it felt surreal to me lol. Small town
@@Derek_Wyld lol I guess I’m used to it since I live in Olympia. You’ll have to come back and check out the house he lived in on Pear street in Oly. ✌️
@@TJ-id6ee I would love to. But it would hurt being there again without my ex I lived with for 6 years who left me
Lucky you to walk on his steps. I want to go there too soon!
@@TJ-id6ee I'm in Elma/McCleary myself. You're right, kinda get used to it. Yet, it's still cool seeing the "Come As You Are" when you enter Aberdeen.
My mind hears music even in isolated version of this masterpiece.
bruh same
Me too, totally!!
That "Fuuun" Is perfect.
Agree
So perfect, so raw. If he was still with us, he would never be able to sing that chorus at his age. But the dude would have adapted. I believe if he were still alive, he would still be cranking out songs that sound like the Beatles on lithium. My dad is 70 years old and grew up with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin and every once in a while when I go visit him he is watching a live Nirvana concert and just loving every minute of it.
His pitch is amazing! Remember this was a world before Autotune!! Great ear!
We miss you buddy. You're gone, but never forgotten. We still look out for Francis. 🙏
Easily one of the greatest rock singers of all time.
His voice is so relaxing 💗
Kurt Cobain & Jim Morrison, the two great bluesy poets of pain in classical rock. Love hearing them scream- it's medicinal somehow
Five to one and one to five, no one here gets out alive. You know you're right.
There is a great documentary with Butch Vig discussing a lot of the recordings from Nevermind. Kurt's vocals were amazing.
What’s the doc called?
@@vintagejunktofunk4616 ua-cam.com/video/ErcJ2kUC4Wg/v-deo.html there is a part of it. That should help lead you to other clips from it. Peace and love!
"You know John Lennon did that"... I think is the line Butch told Kurt to get him to do things he was resisting in recording.
Ooh... Hauntingly powerful.
What a legend. One of the greatest musicians of all time. May he rest in peace wherever he is.
His voice is just mesmerizing I don’t like the song but I could just listen to this for hours
How do you not like this song?💀 I guess you got tired of hearing it right? 😂
Theres no mistaking cobains vocals - this guy means it
He’s gonna be big!
Nahhhh☠️☠️
@@sleepyyfps …don’t mean to be curt but he will….🤩
@@StONed-mb1iv I’m not being mean, I’m a fan of Nirvana. He’s dead.
@@sleepyyfps I’m being horrid!! I know…
I know, if this guy gets the right crowd, he might make it somewhere.
I love the sound so very much. Also when he just speaks. I often listen to random interviews of him because I love the tune, tone of his voice.
Yessss!! I know what you mean!!
godly vocals
He was just lettin' it go. It was normal in previous decades. The mid-nineties killed authenticity.
@@watamatafoyu '50s, actually, killed authenticity. mass corp
It's so crazy how this song, really changed the world. Its just crazy this song will NEVER get old and I mean it Kurt Cobain made the best songs my favs are (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, School, You Know Your Right, Lithium, The Man Who Sold The World, Heart Shaped Box, Something In The Way, And that's most the songs I like from Nirvana #nirvana4life #ripkurtcobain #smellsliketeenspirit (RIP KURT COBAIN)
The Man Who Sold The World is actually a David Bowie cover, and altho I'm also a big Bowie fan, I absolutely love Nirvana's version of it. All the covers they did on Unplugged are amazing, the whole album is, might be my favorite of theirs to be honest. It really shows that loud or quiet Kurt could do it all and still sound just as good if not better, plus its a slight glimpse into the direction Kurt could have possibly gone in.
Really unique and amazing vocalist. You really notice it when you hear piano heavy, melodic covers of Nirvana songs just how good his range is and the melodies
Como imaginar las rolas de kurt si aún viviera. Wou
i could listen to this for hours
Nobody can compare
No matter what Kurt did, he always held a special place in my heart. I'm from the Pacific NW too, and I have always felt pride that he was from my area! Miss him SO much, can't even put into words! And absolutely love his voice....
same im from vancover island he was only like 3 hours away
He’s voice in so relaxing so good
Wow!!!!!! Such a legendary voice!
best voice🥺
Not even close.
@Barney 04 ☕ of grunge? Because I'd put him in the bottom 50 singers of all time
@Barney 04 ☕ idk man. My top 5 are MJ, elton john, Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry and Elvis. It is my opinion that Kurt just isn't a good singer but to have him as a top 5er out of all the talent out there is just crazy and it seems like you need to listen to a wider array of music.
@Barney 04 ☕ you know Chris Cornell then? Soundgarden and Audioslave sound much better than nirvana due to Chris' singing voice.

Incredible ❤
This is gonna help me practive vocals for Rockband! thxx!
One of the greatest defining moments in music, the voice that changed music forever
His voice was freaking amazing. Even more so when you hear it like this. We’ve lost some good ones along the way.
I LOVE HIS VOICE SO MUCH!!! I'm addicted.
KURT COBAIN ❤
Like a ghost 😢
rip kurt
I once read his vocals described as "a beautiful buzzsaw".... so true!
wish he was still here. i wasn’t around for him being around, but i would really wanna meet him if he was still alive :(
His lives sound just as good if not better than album versions
Yeah there's a bunch of songs from various shows where I like the vocals more than the albums. Its crazy how consistent he could keep his vocals while both screaming and singing like he did, yet still being extremely melodic. His voice really was like a completely separate instrument unto itself.
When he says hello it's sounds like he's saying it into a fan
Haunting vocals !! Guy was awesome , the whole band was awesome !
I just heard this for the first time. “Haunting” was exactly the adjective that came to mind.
R.I.P Kurt Cobain
One day he’ll be famous I know it.
Bro what
He's my idol and I wish I could've been alive when he was. He was an amazing singer and we will always miss you, rip kurt
So cool to hear his vocals isolated on this. Legendary!
¡Tremendo! Además yo amaba y amo aún las pintas de Kurt. NUNCA pasan de moda.
A legend we lost too early
Miss you. And that voice. Nobody sounds like you.
I love the way he delivers the "Oh no I know" part
Sadly now that Kurt Cobain is gone we will never know just how great he could have become. Hands down a great musician. RIH young Gun.#OBP BLUESMAN
A powerfull voice of a entire generation.
Miss you Kurt
Haunting, listening to him like that, met him at Reading '92 , still love listening to his music he'd be the same age as me
Easily the great band of all time. No close second!
The True Grunge Voice ❤
You can count on one hand the artists that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Kurt really sang with feeling. Still miss him. Thank you for this! ❤❤❤
I've spent the last five seconds wishing the video didn't end before the YEAH.
Voice of an Angel
Listening to this song my mixed race wife asked me what a mulatto was. I told her. “You’re a mulatto. A mulatto is mixed race person. Black and white.”
Customized Reverb is something I love, just love
Wonderful ❤
I honesty don't get how people place Stayley above this genius. Layne was awesome. But I've covered his more brutal vocals. This one always shows me flames. Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous raspy yet silky pipes on the verse. Goosebums
They both are great!
@@kurtcobain8316 I knew you were alive. How's Tupac?
@@adamkarr3218 Tupac is doing great! The new verses he's working on with Prince are 🔥🔥🔥!!!
But it is with great sadness that I have to report Elvis did pass quietly in his sleep last week. He was 87. 😢
Lots of splices here, I wonder how many takes and blown voices were made to get this finished track.
If you’ve listened to him for many years and see him in concert most likely 1 take. I mean have you seen the MTV Special? Lots of artist takes breaks or if they mess up they start over but Kurt… one take baby! So so good
Probably just done for the sake of fitting it al in the YT short lol
The beat never changes, the lyrics created this song.
When someone puts the soul in something its so good
The singers do not define grunge. It’s the whole band. Yet I think facelift came out a bit before the whole scene blew up.
This makes me smile and ache at the same time 👏❤️🩹
This is so beautiful
That when the lights out though
Stem Player Kurt
Hauntingly powerful it’s no accident his music blew my mind when I was a teenager
Rest in peace Kurt [*]...
That voice🥶❤️
It’s interesting when you hear any musician or band live and it’s a different sound that’s just the magic of the producer of produces it along with everybody else so it sounds good
Forever! ❤
I miss him so much may he rest in peace
Every musicains voice has unique qualities
His voice makes me feel better, no idea why, that's true talent❤
Thanks for this, need more like this
Wow you can really hear the vocal comps when they’re isolated!
sounds a lot more rhythmic than in it's context and it freaks me out
My god I loved and love his voice so much
Anyone can sound good in the studio with the right person behind the mixing board. You can hear the double tracking on Hello, and all of the edits in this.
A chill runs through my body with the voice of the angel Cobain
I wasn’t even born when this guy was at the top. His voice gives me goosebumps.
Rest In Peac🙏🤍🕊🙏♥️
There will never be anyone with a voice like Kurt's. Imagine the music that he would have brought to us. If he hadn't been taken from this world. R I P
This deserves more love
