This video breaks down the technique for hook turns, rotating over your center in place - forward and back variations. It also includes one of my favorite drills that allows your body to intrinsically learn balance and weight transfer and builds your coordination and muscle memory.

This is gold. Thanks I've been waiting for this lesson. I didn't even know you could hook forward.

    Hello Steven,
Thanks for all your superb videos, very didactic, which help me a lot to progress in addition to the lessons I take with a Cuban teacher. You rock!
A crazy question: What kind of shoes are you wearing in this video?
After doing hook turns at home, my socks are starting to suffer seriously and I can't find any suitable, inexpensive shoes!

I tried to explain the hook turn to the guys in class i was teaching, because like you i just assumed that everyone could do them. But they were all flat footed and getting tangled up. Thanks for the breakdown because how i was explaining it to them they just couldn't get it.

I just came across this video and by surprise I've been drilling those turns recently. I use almost the same technique, but I do the forward turn exactly the same way as the backward turn: I put the leading leg on the toe, but when I start turning, I put it on the heel. So it means I have the exact same legs position as for the backward turn: my forward leg is on its heel and my backward leg is on its toe during rotation. By doing this I feel that more momentum is generated for the motion. Didn't you try that?

Hey Steven, great video, but I am failing at this..
doing the 180 is easy. one foot is crossing over, so they have already changed positions before the weight transfer begins.
yet with the 360 I am missing the part where the feet change positions again? You are saying it's the same movement just a tad more aggressively, but I see you turning on your heels for the second 180. Even then with turning on my toes then my heels my legs wind up crossed over at 360 because I dont understand how they change positions again.
It's difficult to explain. Do you see my problem? Can you explain how you do this?
It looks like magic. I am watching your feet in slo-mo and in loops. It looks physically possible, but over here it is not! 8I

okay, I figured it out now. what you forgot to mention is that you place the hooking foot in a fashion that already after 90 dg turning its heel is ending up behind the standing leg's heel. then for the 90-360 you actually turn on the hooking foot's heel while you continue turning on the standing leg's ball. That way the feet actually come out next to each other with no awkward twist. It's brilliant. It's beautiful. Only it took me a long time analysing in slow-motion what your feet are doing to figure it out.
Perhaps there should be a little extra drill for the 90-360 part which is utterly different from the 180 part?
