Are We Making More Bermuda Triangles?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- One reason the Bermuda Triangle has scared people for generations is the seaweed. And thanks to eutrophication and other human causes, that Sargassum seaweed is starting to travel the world. Here's how we're accidentally making more of those treacherous seaweed patches.

As a Caribbean native I can say wholeheartedly that Sargassum seaweed sucks and ruins our beaches. So if there's something else we can blame Sargassum seaweed on I'll happily join in
I've been to Cancun and there was tons of it on beach. In some areas we were swimming in the seaweed. That was fun... Maybe they cleaned some areas so it wasn't so bad everywhere.
@@mynuttyme The cleaning may have been done by these people: ua-cam.com/video/2fXiboAGQvM/v-deo.html - it's about the only good thing about the growth of this bloom..
Hopefully we can find an efficient way to harvest and convert Sargassum into usable biomass, as either fuel, food, both, or medicine, transforming an oceanwide problem into a global benefit.
@@NazuikoI'm in the eastern Caribbean and let me tell you, in some parts of the year, the beach stinks with the stuff.
@@freddoflintstono9321 thanks for the video
What finally broke the fantasy of the Bermuda Triangle for me? Finding out insurance companies don't charge higher rates to travel through the "Triangle."
If anyone would take advantage of a mysterious and deadly place to make themselves rich, it would be insurance companies.
And it wouldn't even be explicitly to make themselves rich by exploiting the danger. The way they work is functionally gambling, they promise to cover the cost of something going terribly wrong in exchange for a monthly payment, so they are gambling that something doesn't go wrong for you.
The most basic math of the minimum monthly payment is total cost to them if it goes wrong, times the chance it goes wrong each month. Any less then they lose money on average, too much higher and someone could undercut them and take their customers away. (Obviously the actual math is way more complicated)
But in essence, if the insurance companies aren't upcharging for doing something or offering a discount to not do something, then it isn't a statistically significant enough difference for them to bother with. (As the opportunity cost of doing so is greater than the savings of the more accurate rate)
I read an article years ago that said that, by raw number, there are more ship and airplane disparitions in the Bermuda Triangle than anywhere else. However, in proportion to the number of ships and airplanes in the sector, the number of disparitions was similar to other, less frequented, routes.

Bermuda Triangle has 90% LESS accidents than the global average
this is life changing info
Same reason I don't believe in dousing, clairvoyance, and other such pseudoscience. If they really existed, they'd be getting commercially exploited.
Mr. Green, I am truly happy to see that you're still your wonderful, vital, energetic self. I hope your treatments will be over soon!
The Bermuda triangle is just part of a larger circle where literally every ship ever lost disappeared. 🌎
Ah, yes, the famous Bermuda Sphere.
The Bermuda Beachball.
Bermuda's earth, where most (all) ships were lost, the biggest venn diagram with 100% overlap aka a circle.
@@JasonOvalles "Famulus„ That's a cool word.

The amount of sarcasm sagassum provides is huge.
Enough to make sarcastaball a real sport?
No matter how you cook it, it just tastes like hot sargassum
I understand that reference
Go Team Venture!!
"He said there's some one out there, named Brock. With, 'guys'." 🤷♂️🏴☠️ 😂
What tipped you off? Was it the huge zipper? Maybe the rubber mask?
Dude, i had no idea this word also existed in english, i know it in portuguese for alk my life
just saw a video about a guy in mexico who started a sargassum removal business and he make bricks that are about 40% sargassum that he uses to build houses, some of which he's built for free
Love seeing ya hank. For a few days expected you taking time off. But now I know this is what keeps you going. You are a true trooper man. Thanks bro
I love how you broke down the cultural reference for us in the future. I have been watching lots of my fave Science shows from 4-6 years ago. 😊😊
So both sarcasm and sargassum have grown due to humans
don't forget the smell of sargassum blooms rotting in the sun. I was in Mexico a few years a go and you couldn't even swim because how much there was let alone enjoy the "fresh ocean breeze". there were 3 tractors running all day to pick it up to what seemed to be no avail
is there a way for us to harvest that sargassum and use it on a large-scale, like for food, compost, building materials, or fuel? I would imagine it's already being done in some places on a small-scale, but sounds like it could be really beneficial for us to try and use up all the excessive growth that's washing up on shores (and leaving what's in the bermuda triangle alone, for the marine life)
ua-cam.com/video/2fXiboAGQvM/v-deo.html
Jonny Quest had an episode in the Sargasso Sea, IIRC. Only in that case, the disappearing boats were being destroyed by some guys with a laser. Man, I loved that show.
It appears we’re unintentionally farming sargassum. So is it edible? If not for us, then for livestock? Or can it be ground into fertilizer? Seems like a waste to leave it all rotting on shores and in shallows.
Double-like for this post - one for the "how can we use this" and a second for the Jonny Quest reference! Quality show!

Hank, you're awesome, you've taught me so much but now it's my turn. Atchafalaya: the stresses at on the "chaf" and the "la"
I'm a huge fan of The Secret World MMO setting so I can't hear about the Sargasso Sea without thinking of eldritch horrors :-P
Love you hank! I hope you are doing strong.
Hank!
With your pfp that looks like a threat
Godspeed in your treatment and recovery from cancer Good Sir!
I live in Barbados and this sea weed is very famous around here. You speak fact my brother
Thanks!
I'm really digging that fish shirt, gotta get me one of those.
So seaweed explains the dissappearance of Flight 19. :LOLOLOLOLOL!
As a viewer from what you'd consider the future, I appreciate the explanation of that reference 😊
It is nice to see you, Hank. Stay strong and get well soon.
❤ Thank you for impacting so many lives by putting your time and energy into spreading retainable and consumable content that educates the whole world on SO many topics. You've made a huge difference. 🌎 I'm sure Bill Nye is proud of you.
Man, what a meteoric fall Bill Nye had. He used to be awesome
@@mfmageiwatch : What happened? Did Bill Nye speak about "wrong" science, something not fitting to your personal worldview?
I hope you're doing alright Hank. We all wish you Godspeed in your fight young man!
There is a man in Mexico that is making bricks out of sargasm. It was a great video.
3:18 as a Louisianian, I love the way he pronounces Atchafalaya lol
If the bermuda triangle only really exists because of an excess of Methane gas and Magnetite ore , than mining both would probably solve a lot of the problems associated with the area.
If they made boats to collect sargassum before it got to beaches , then used it for whatever it was good for...
The people in the future should be thankful for the memesplaining. Oh, that word sounds silly in this timeline, but it'll grow on you.
We need to figure out how to use it and harvest heck out of it
When incidents in one mystical place is a big deal you're gonna hear more about incidents that place, it doesn't have to mean that more are happening there.
No wonder the seeds showed up in Ghana, I'm a Ghanaian living in Ghana. In recent years we used to dump untreated sewage waste straight into the sea .
Touch tone telephone playing in my head over and over cause of this video
Wait a minute, you mean DuckTales wasn't making up that part about seaweed in the Bermuda Triangle?!
Riparian buffers plz ‼️ also, you need to come on set w a bucket hat ❤ happy to see you smiling too btw :)
I wonder if the sea weed will eventually cause a sort of land bridge to form between the two continents, allowing for wildlife to be exchanged.
Clever shirt choice today Hank!
Interesting fact: since the introduction of publicly available GPS, there has been only one “mysterious” disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle. People were just getting lost.
So, is there any research to find a use for massive quantities of sargassum?
You got this hank
I'd to write a 60 page project on the Bermuda triangle at school (painful memories! Aaa) I was worried where this video was going to go.
That's pretty interesting and scarey that sargasso seaweed is causing the problems it is! D=
We should use the algee to make Biomass, taking it out of the see.
😮 Go Hank!
Those sargassum blooms outside Africa should be a boon to agriculture. Seaweed is great fertilizer, at least when it grows in low salinity water. Slat content might be an issue in this case though.
Thank you. Watching this video gave me a greatly needed mental relief, and reassuring me that there are still people who base their reasoning based on evidence and rational thinking.I just watched an excerpt from UFO hearing and was blown away that our tax money are still being wasted on that kind of nonsense, and that our government representatives are eating it up. I thought I was going insane, and this video actually made me feel happy by reminding me that there are still people who use verifiable evidence and rational thinking. Thank you again.
Good bad movie concept. The Bermuda Triangle...comes to you!
hank is so considered to ppl 70 years from now.
2080: The amazon has been forested away, human civilization has fallen, the floods are palpably extreme, and the golden tendrils of the sargassum empire are blooming from the nitrogen/phosphorous rich waters sargassum must consume.
Hank. That shirt. Dude.
Seriously. 😂😳😋
NOAA: The Bermuda Triangle doesn't exist it can't hurt you
Sargassum: Come at me bro
Not to be rude, but I saw a vlog brothers thumbnail the other day and thought, "damn, chemo is hitting Hank kinda hard." Then I realized it was John, lol. Keep the faith, brother, we're all pulling for you. In fact, I don't wanna meet the soulless bastard that would wish otherwise. #cancersucks
I'm pretty sure that the "Bermuda Triangle Mystery" is a combination of heavy sea and air travel, the fact that a lot of those boats and planes are piloted by rank amateurs, and that the area get a lot of sun and, consequently, produces a lot of storms.
Gee, thanks, Hank. Nice to hear that this channel's misanthropic bent is still going strong.
Reminds me of the floating island in the movie "life of pi"
Every ocean vessel that has ever dissapeared has been on the surface of the Bermuda Sphere (Earth)
Hank, is that a WORBLE hat??? So cool.
wouldn't a big part of the amount of shipwrecks be due to the sheer amount of ships that went and still do go through there for shipping things over the centuries?
❤ I feel kind of bad....but it is often hard to watch the Scishow when Hank is not the narrator.
Hope your doing well!
The sarcastic sea has been demoralizing many a mariner to their pithy demise.
And not one mention that the Atlantic Ocean breached the 100 degree ( Fahrenheit) yesterday and there is a real danger that the deep water currents will reverse the direction they flow causing untold catastrophic events.
Hank is looking as handsome as ever ❤️
Be well, my dude.
This "floating, golden rainforest" stinks to high Heaven for several months when it washes onshore. JS!
Good thing Sargassum is edible.
hank green quoting taylor swift made my day
YOU'RE THE BEST HANK!
I think the Bermuda triangle is an old meteor impact and has a lot of magnetic material which causes all the weird stuff people talk about. My own theory but it makes sense to me
Let's just start eating it. Or use it as "kelp fertiliser"
Huh. I wonder if all that biomass can be used to make fuel or to enrich soil.
Wasn't there a DuckTales episode about this?
The sargasm is coming for you...
Sargassum is a problem, but it’s not creating a new Bermuda Triangle. That area is haunted!
Thank you for the Swift words...LMAO
There is no mystery in the triangle.
🤔 I can dig this theory
Seaweed? That stuff may ensnare ships but plane?
I'm pressing the X button here.
Still strong hank
While we are on the subject of really weird phenomena, can your team please make some sense of the very recent release of UFO info by the U.S. government? I think you guys could explain....?
Sargassum absorbs CO2 and releases oxygen, so it's a good thing for balancing greenhouse gases.
Really dissatisfied that you didn't mention how sargassum is full of heavy metals 😢

Can we farm the Sargassum?
i know the seaweed clogs up beaches and stuff, but while it grows in the ocean, doesn't it take in carbon dioxide and provide habitats for sea creatures? if we can find a way to manage the blooms, can't we treat sargassum as a floating crop of sorts?
Is it edible? Can we farm/harvest it?
How edible is sargassum? I know other ocean plants are food sources e.g. Kelp
Nice now all the world needs is to drop it off close to coasts where piracy happens to kill speed boats and prevent them from capturing ships and taking them to friendly waters. It’s a pretty good weapon against no good pirates.
Lol if someone 70 years in the future watches this, that would be kind of cool

0:30 Cthulhu?
"...1.3 million to 3.9 million sq. km."
Huh? Seems like its vertices (and thus its sides, perimeter, and area) are well-defined...why the vagueness?
Not that he's doing it here, but it always amuses me when people mispronounce sargassum as "sar-GASM". XD
Who named this seaweed?!
I know I'm not the smartest person by any means, but I have to ask this.
I was always told that planets ate up CO² and released O.
So if that is true, how does a seaweed kill off all the oxygen then? Now I've heard this my entire life but never knew why. I asked my 7th grade Science teacher and she told me to be quite cause we weren't covering any of that in school. Anyway if anyone can help me out on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I also could just Google it. 😆 I guess that would make to much sense now. Lol. Have a great day and stay away from anything that has triangle in it when in the water. You should be safe then.
So, can we eat this seaweed? It might help if we can eat it.
My first reaction upon reading the title: No?
I see no maps of missing vessels or maps for time periods with hotspots of missing vessels. Totally unscientific.
We could advertise the algae as some ancient traditional healing herb, we trick the Chinese into moving the largest fishing fleet in the world out of other countries fisheries to clean up the oceans... Lol. No, seriously, could we use the thing for anything? Animal fodder? Biomass?
Ugh. Sargassum is truly the lowest form of seaweed.
