Pleasantly surprised by the updated CarPlay. Checked it out yesterday and first thing I noticed was the updated cleaner look, bigger bar for scrubbing through music, and crossfade! Nice update!
Cool stuff, but you still need to swap to maps manually if you receive a call during navigation. They should implement the call menu in overlay with maps to be efficient.
Thanks for highlighting these new points. Super helpful. Also wasn't expecting to see a video filmed at a pub car park in Andover (which I've been to a fair few times!)
Great videos bro! Always informative and definetely something people will use... you should do a meet and greet some day! People would come up with their mercs and enjoy a nice drive!
Hi Nick, thank you another very informative video. 😊 Regarding one of the new features to CarPlay, SharePlay. Is this only for Apple Music only, or would it work on Spotify? Many thanks keep videos coming 👏👌
I believe Apple Music only I don’t think it’s got a kit to work with other apps yet (if Apple are going to roll it out) They might keep it as a selling point for Apple Music Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏🙏
I read that its the cars other occupants can stream Spotify through it but beware you can only use this feature if the driver has a paid Apple Music Subscription. Big fail on Apple's part there
As @qm7996 already stated, you need an Apple Music subscription on the main phone to get the SharePlay feature in the first place. But also limiting, the people joining in can only select music from _your_ phone (in practice almost anything, given an Apple Music subscription), not whatever the the phone joining might have access to.
I changed back to ‘Hey Siri’ in the settings after using just the word ‘Siri’ for a couple of weeks. Too many false triggerings of Siri in the new set up, something I’d really wanted for a long time….until I started using it 😂 I now absolutely see why ‘Hey’ was used. Much better.
I live in southampton and have family in the new forest and regulary camp there etc, and was always soendinf my youth there. So i can relate with the signal lol
Mine too! Always use CarPlay! Battery level for the phone? Or the car? Battery level does appear on the right I’ve noticed if you’re using Wireless. If it’s wired CarPlay then it won’t show at all
Excellent video, thank you. Only thing I would like to see is the ability to download Apple Maps for larger areas. I need all western coastal US states for a long vacation drive and don’t want to use all the mobile data needed for the drive as I’m from outside the US…
Just download multiple maps that overlap by some margin. You gotta stop sometime for fuel/food/rest and you can just select whichever offline map works best for your next trip segment. Not completely seamless, but about as easy peasyas it gets for now.
Hey Nic, thanks for the new video & new tips😊. P.S - I thought the Smartphone integration for Apple car play isn’t full screen even if you have the long dash screen Or am I wrong?
No worries! Glad you enjoyed it! Latest Generation MBUX supports full screen CarPlay 🤓 MBUX NTG 6 (when you say Hey Mercedes it has lines for the voice assistant) This has a cropped version of CarPlay because there are multiple screen sizes, 7” and 10.25” MBUX NTG 7 (when you say Hey Mercedes, it has sparkles for the voice assistant) This version supports full screen CarPlay as you cannot get it in 7” it’s only available in the full 10.25 screen size so no cropped CarPlay and it’s Wireless too!
@@npoleary ohh that’s great😃! I asked because I changed my car 2 weeks ago and bought a 2019 A Class AMG Line Premium with the 10.25 screen so I was wondering if it supports full screen CarPlay.
@stephanie123093 ah very nice! No sadly not it’ll only be the A-Class facelift where the 10.25” screen is the only one available so full screen CarPlay from 2023 models onwards.
PERFECT VIDEO! I was hoping for next gen Apple CarPlay. I am sad that MB proclaimed it unlikely for them to implement it. They were mentioned as one of the cooperating car manufactures for next gen Apple car play during last year Apple conference. It seems to me that Apple wants us to forget about it. MBUX maps are so unusable 😢. They are not able to to keep up with realtime road closures update of WAZE and others. I am looking FW that day when car manufactures realizes that they should give up and enable full screen Apple next/gen CarPlay. Could you make video about that? Thank you.
Me too! I’ve been emailing all the car manufacturers but no one knows anything about it :( I do hope it arrives one day (but there again most likely on a newly released model I’m sure!) Maybe! I’ll add it to the list!
I've been using iOS 17 for a couple months now on my iPhone 12 mini and LOVE the updates to CarPlay, specially offline Maps and SharePlay. My new iPhone 15 Pro Max Black Titanium gets here today, so now I have to get a USB A to USB C cable in order to use CarPlay in my vehicle.
Maybe one day Apple with make CarPlay where you can select which apps you want to show on screen. Would love to be able to activate and deactivate my home alarm system from car screen. Thanks for sharing
Hello. Thanks for the video. How do you make CarPlay appear full screen on your Mercedes? I have a class A with the same screen but it is cut off by the temperature indicators. Is there a way to configure it? Thanks again.
No worries glad you enjoyed it! Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before. The reason is because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!
It was weird, I thought your maps showed you were near Goch Way - which is about a couple of blocks where I live - then I scrolled back and you did film this in Andover! Hahaha! Andover represent! :D
Haha I’ll film a video anywhere! 👀 My partner was at a wedding with some friends (I wasn’t invited 😅) so brought my camera stuff with me and lights and produced this CarPlay video until it had finished. Had a Pizza Express that night too, it was great 👍🏼 Never been to Andover before but the lakes were beautiful (where I filmed the start and the end)
@@npoleary Thanks a lot for your quick reply! Would’ve been cool if it worked as well with Spotify, but hey, maybe one day, it’ll work. 😃 Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Number 7 is actually not new in iOS 17. It was introduced in iOS 14 and has been available in the Ford Mustang Mach-E for almost 2 years. It was introduced for Porsche Taycan a few months ago. What IS new in iOS 17 is real-time EV charger availability. This means when you search for EV chargers in Apple Maps, it will now tell you in real-time how many charging plugs are available/in use/unavailable at that EV charging site.
@@npoleary as far as I’m aware, this feature is only available in Mustang Mach-E and Porsche Taycan. it’s rumored to be coming soon to Ford F150 lightning. The other new thing in Apple Maps on iOS 17 is that when it detects you are in an EV, it will add a button to search “EV charging stations“, as opposed to “gas stations“ or “petrol stations“.
in this video she shows you driving on the right and CarPlay on the bar on the right where there are the time that signals 4G and the applications, the bar may be moved from the right also in Italy where you drive on the left with the update
Hi Nick. I note that on MBUX on my EQB that the Car Play screen is not wide screen like the one in your video. On either side of my Car Play screen I have the temperatures etc. Is there a setting I am not using?

@Steven-ez1ng sadly it’s because MBUX gen 1 or NTG 6 is available in two screen sizes. So for it to work on all of them it has to the 7” version. The newer generation multimedia system is only available in one screen size so isn’t cropped.
It’s because it’s the latest generation multimedia system. MBUX NTG 7 is only available in one screen size. MBUX NTG 6 the previous one is available on two screen sizes so CarPlay is cropped slightly.
@@npoleary Thanks mate, i did catch that after reading further down in the comments. Ive got an EQA on the way and from my research it doesn't look like that has NTG7

That’s interesting to know that it’s a MBUX issue, not an Apple one. I was waiting for this update to fix it on my GLC screen. I no longer use CarPlay because the screen looks ridiculous with the blank sides. It seriously looks like a GUI error, something you’d find in vehicles from much cheaper manufacturers.
Others have had the same before, my partner had a Mini Cooper, cropped on CarPlay because you could order it with two screen sizes but the newer one is now full screen. I know there are others too

So with this, you’d just use the device buttons on thing you’ve connected it to. So if it’s the car, use the volume controls on the car either on the steering wheel or central area.
Is there a way to get youtube or netflix on the nbux screens of glb 2001. Not for when driving more for when i need to wait for peeps like when they in a store or other stuff you can chill and watch instead of on youre phone
Sadly it’s not something officially support by Mercedes (at least it’s not in their brochures) Some cars can do video playback depending on their equipment but I have answered this my frequently asked question series: ua-cam.com/video/tu_Aktw93v4/v-deo.htmlsi=0yn78n0gu_Ai5aZK Might be useful to you! 🤓

Yes I also find it is the greatest pain ! And I can’t believe MB can’t tweak its software to sense the screen size and would be surprised it it really impacted the processing significantly etc I just don’t use car play - also because I have to plug it in .. I can use MB system and for music at least w Bluetooth connection I can ask Siri via my watch to play xx etc music. Not a premium work around. But it works.
Yes I wish it was full screen too. It’s not just Mercedes there are other car manufacturers too. My partner had a Mini, the previous one it was cropped because it was available in two screen sizes and the new one it’s full screen. CarPlay can’t natively scale so it depends on what screen sizes are on offer when ordering from new. I wish it was full screen for everyone!
@@npoleary thank you so much, that makes perfect sense, thanks for the detailed explanation. It’s one of the few things that bugs me, other than that it’s a great system, Infact I tend to use the mbux more than CarPlay now!
Hi Nick, Not closely related to this video, however, how about a video on the ChatGPT Beta integration into MBUX? I’ve wanted to try it however the ‘invalidate your warranty’ bit in the license agreement is a little scary. Have you tried and tested it?
Oh what? Haha that’s sounds weird? Surely not! No sadly it’s only available in the USA at launch :( I even wrote up a script and had to scrap the video because it’s not in the UK 😢

You legend thank you 🙏 I spend ages blurring out the QR codes but missed one! It's not my actual daily phone running iOS 17 anyway but who knows it could have had an impact! I'll be driving and people could be adding songs to my playlist 😂 UA-cam's currency processing a blur on that part of the video, so next time you watch it, it'll be gone! Thank you again 👊🏼
Haha I bought an iPhone to specifically make this video so it’s not the phone I use day to day. I use my main phone a lot for replying to comments, managing socials and all sorts so need a reliable iOS. I will defo upgrade to iOS 17 on the main but yeah that QR code could be my iCloud account music playlist! 😂 Don’t need songs being added randomly to my car 😂 Thank you again 🙏🙏🙏
I never underestimate a video from you. Sadly after 4 years of enjoying my Mercedes, Stratstone’s in Glasgow have been shocking. I’m heading back to BMW, but will still be keeping an eye on your videos.
Thank you! 🙏 Ah don’t worry, recently I’ve done an exciting and started to cover other car manufacturers too (BMW included!) so if I get my hands on new models, I’ll be sure to produce some content! 🤓 What did you go for? Which model?
It’s a 1 Series Sport, which Ive managed to get in a manual. TBH, my wife just got an Astra Ultimate, which is packed with everything, for a great price, & that Germany 🇩🇪, build quality is as good as the Merc. Definitely worth a look in the future.
The one shown in the video is for Apple Music, Spotify’s had Crossfade for quite a while under Settings and then Playback on their app. Not sure about the UA-cam Music app 🤓
Ive added an apple play/android auto screen to my merc. The older infotainment screen was small and no apple car play. I wish, however there was a quick way to switch aux on/off ! I like to listen to the radio and if my phone rings while im listening to the radio I get no sound unless I go to original car settings and change it in the sound settings…by which time ive missed the call. Any workaround?
I guess it depends on what you’ve installed? This doesn’t sound like a manufacturer installation so what have you added? Another screen or replaced the screen in the car? What’s the make of the screen / model and year of car?

Apple Car Play reminds me of ATV. Outdated GUI and no major changes for ages. Still zooming with +- buttons. Still no nav directions on my HUD. Entering adresses in google/apple maps is a mess. Siri is unusable in Dutch making the whole handsoff experience disappointing.
Hi Nick…nice informative video. I am facing problems with Whatsapp incoming calls while driving. I do not get any notifications or incoming call ringtone when using carplay. Is there something that I need to enable in the Settings?
Thank you! Best thing to do is make sure you’re running th latest versions of everything and all of your settings are enabled to allow what’s app to take calls through Apple’s (I think it’s called PhoneKit). Good information but a question. I’m headed to Ireland and Scotland nest week from the US. Do you think I should update to 17 now? I’m just worried about bugs or battery issues.
Thank you! Yes it is a concern that I always factor in before updating anything. Running a UA-cam Channel full time requires stable apps and programs! 😅😅 Phones are very complex and of course it can vary but…I am almost close to saying this is the most stable version of iOS I’ve ever seen 👍🏼 Haven’t had any issues whatsoever so far! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
In fact I think Apple have just released iOS 17.0.1 😂 that was fast! I’m actually staying this on this one for a few days at least before I upgrade just to be sure
Sadly they still avoid the glaring missing feature. No way to set your 3 favorite apps to the vertical navigation panel. Edit: Very odd that on iPhone and iPad you can set your favorites in the bottom panel, but not in CarPlay.
Fortunately, unlike Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, my iPhone recognizes my voice only so won't respond to anyone but me saying "Siri" or "Hey Siri"
Apple Maps needs apple’s own review platform not stupid yelp. And then get some incentives for users to add pics and reviews. I wanna ditch google maps so bad but I just can’t :(

Cool stuff, but you still need to swap to maps manually if you receive a call during navigation. They should implement the call menu in overlay with maps to be efficient.

I don’t think it’s got a kit to work with other apps yet (if Apple are going to roll it out)
They might keep it as a selling point for Apple Music
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏🙏
I read that its the cars other occupants can stream Spotify through it but beware you can only use this feature if the driver has a paid Apple Music Subscription. Big fail on Apple's part there
Would be good to know
As @qm7996 already stated, you need an Apple Music subscription on the main phone to get the SharePlay feature in the first place.
I LOVE crossfade.
SharePlay is gonna be huge on road-trips 🙌🏾
Defo! 👍🏼
Not if you don't have a paid Apple Music Subscription
Fantastic video Nick, as usual 😉
Thank you! 🙏🙏
Loved the all red wallpaper.. matches my Honda Civic SI very well 😏
Yeah I love the new wallpaper too! 🤓
Nice video! Thanks a lot for doing it.
Thanks for watching! 🙏🙏
I live in southampton and have family in the new forest and regulary camp there etc, and was always soendinf my youth there. So i can relate with the signal lol
Excellent video and explanation!
Thank you! 🙏
Another belter, I always appreciate your views & the nuisances of apple CarPlay on iOS 17
Thanks for watching! What did you not like about it? 🤓
@@npoleary yes the apple CarPlay has always been an integral part of my life & I would like to see battery level status on the (home) screen tool bar
Mine too! Always use CarPlay!
Battery level for the phone? Or the car?
Battery level does appear on the right I’ve noticed if you’re using Wireless. If it’s wired CarPlay then it won’t show at all
My heart goes out to everyone named Siri in the world.
Cheers🎉
The Willet Arms, eh? We are practically neighbours.
Haha 😛
I do live nearby! 😜
I wish they would bring back the all pink wall paper
Great intro, Nick.
Thank you! 🤓
I live in the New Forest so I know exactly what you mean regarding the rubbish phone signal; this is a welcome feature 😂
Excellent mate. Nice car too!
Thank you! 🙏
Hey Nic, thanks for the new video & new tips😊.
P.S - I thought the Smartphone integration for Apple car play isn’t full screen even if you have the long dash screen Or am I wrong?
No worries! Glad you enjoyed it!
Latest Generation MBUX supports full screen CarPlay 🤓
MBUX NTG 6 (when you say Hey Mercedes it has lines for the voice assistant)
This has a cropped version of CarPlay because there are multiple screen sizes, 7” and 10.25”
MBUX NTG 7 (when you say Hey Mercedes, it has sparkles for the voice assistant)
This version supports full screen CarPlay as you cannot get it in 7” it’s only available in the full 10.25 screen size so no cropped CarPlay and it’s Wireless too!
Great video! Nicely filmed.
Thank you! 🙏🙏
Nicely done!
Thank you! 🤓
Thank you.
Me too! I’ve been emailing all the car manufacturers but no one knows anything about it :(
I do hope it arrives one day (but there again most likely on a newly released model I’m sure!)
Maybe!
Ah good to see someone else using it!
I’ve upgraded too! Which one did you go for?
I would love a UA-cam app to play from your phone on the screen when you are parked
This 👆
just purchased my first mercedes and loving your vids. looking forward to trying apple play and the mer me app
Ah awesome! Thank you! 🙏
Wish we could use our own wallpapers in CarPlay… seems like an easy thing to do 😊 anyway good video thank you 😊
That would be cool! Hopefully one day!
Thank you! 🙏
Maybe one day Apple with make CarPlay where you can select which apps you want to show on screen. Would love to be able to activate and deactivate my home alarm system from car screen. Thanks for sharing
很不错的分享!感谢
Great video.. so basically you don’t have to say hey to Siri anymore.. apple nailed it this time! 👍🏼
Thank you! Yeah few changes here and there! CarPlay’s better than ever before!
@@npoleary Thank you very much
It was weird, I thought your maps showed you were near Goch Way - which is about a couple of blocks where I live - then I scrolled back and you did film this in Andover! Hahaha! Andover represent! :D
Haha I’ll film a video anywhere! 👀
My partner was at a wedding with some friends (I wasn’t invited 😅) so brought my camera stuff with me and lights and produced this CarPlay video until it had finished. Had a Pizza Express that night too, it was great 👍🏼
Never been to Andover before but the lakes were beautiful (where I filmed the start and the end)
3:05 I’m still on ios 16 with an iPhone 13 Pro and in my Vauxhall Corsa, you just say, “Hey Siri” without the need to press any buttons.
Hey Nick, thank you very much for this informative vid! Quick question - does SharePlay work with Spotify?
No worries! Sadly no it’s an Apple Music thing as this was just an iOS update. We’ll have to keep an eye out if Spotify add anything in the future!
@@npoleary Thanks a lot for your quick reply! Would’ve been cool if it worked as well with Spotify, but hey, maybe one day, it’ll work. 😃
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Number 7 is actually not new in iOS 17. It was introduced in iOS 14 and has been available in the Ford Mustang Mach-E for almost 2 years. It was introduced for Porsche Taycan a few months ago.
What IS new in iOS 17 is real-time EV charger availability. This means when you search for EV chargers in Apple Maps, it will now tell you in real-time how many charging plugs are available/in use/unavailable at that EV charging site.
Thanks for clarifying, I think the API only works with certain manufacturers. Does it work with yours? 🤓
Ah awesome thanks for sharing!
in this video she shows you driving on the right and CarPlay on the bar on the right where there are the time that signals 4G and the applications, the bar may be moved from the right also in Italy where you drive on the left with the update
Hi Nick. I note that on MBUX on my EQB that the Car Play screen is not wide screen like the one in your video. On either side of my Car Play screen I have the temperatures etc. Is there a setting I am not using?

@@npolearyso we can’t upgrade the MBUX? Such a waste of the space on our 10” screen
@Steven-ez1ng sadly it’s because MBUX gen 1 or NTG 6 is available in two screen sizes. So for it to work on all of them it has to the 7” version. The newer generation multimedia system is only available in one screen size so isn’t cropped.
Hi Nick, am i mistaken or have you managed to get your Carplay to fill the screen more? looks like there is a lot less border than usual :)
Ah nice, Mercedes have announced the EQA facelift that I posted about so if you’re going for the new one that would be good! I haven’t seen it yet though
I use wireless CarPlay in my A250e but the chopped screen makes it very awful😭. Isn’t there a way to use the full 10.25” screen?

That’s interesting to know that it’s a MBUX issue, not an Apple one. I was waiting for this update to fix it on my GLC screen.
I no longer use CarPlay because the screen looks ridiculous with the blank sides. It seriously looks like a GUI error, something you’d find in vehicles from much cheaper manufacturers.
Others have had the same before, my partner had a Mini Cooper, cropped on CarPlay because you could order it with two screen sizes but the newer one is now full screen.

How to control Music Sound on my iphone15 connected with CarPlay ? I am unable do it using the volume up down bottons available on my iphone.
Sadly it’s not something officially support by Mercedes (at least it’s not in their brochures)

You should just be able to turn it up, there aren’t any additional volume controls in CarPlay for that.

Is crossfade only working with Apple Music oder also with Spotify (I know they have their own setting for it) or UA-cam Music?
The one shown in the video is for Apple Music, Spotify’s had Crossfade for quite a while under Settings and then Playback on their app. Not sure about the UA-cam Music app 🤓
Ive added an apple play/android auto screen to my merc. The older infotainment screen was small and no apple car play. I wish, however there was a quick way to switch aux on/off ! I guess it depends on what you’ve installed? This doesn’t sound like a manufacturer installation so what have you added? Another screen or replaced the screen in the car?

You can on CarPlay, just press the Dashboard button on the bottom and it’ll split. It’s even compatible with 3rd party map apps too! 🤓
@@npoleary when Waze is active on my car I’d like a half screen with the radio details showing. I don’t see a way to do that.
Oh I see which the car’s infotainment system on the other half?
Try using TuneIn Radio on CarPlay, this uses data on your phone but…will do split screen 🤓
@@npoleary ok. Thanks
Phones are very complex and of course it can vary but…I am almost close to saying this is the most stable version of iOS I’ve ever seen 👍🏼
Haven’t had any issues whatsoever so far! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@npoleary thank you
In fact I think Apple have just released iOS 17.0.1 😂 that was fast!
I’m actually staying this on this one for a few days at least before I upgrade just to be sure
Love that one of the new features is slightly bigger text 🥴
Hey it’s only small improvements! Haha
But still CarPlay is used by so many people these days, it’s amazing!
Sadly they still avoid the glaring missing feature. No way to set your 3 favorite apps to the vertical navigation panel.
Edit: Very odd that on iPhone and iPad you can set your favorites in the bottom panel, but not in CarPlay.
This is like, the main feature I want.
That would be cool! 👍🏼
must the phone be plug in, or can you with bluetooth thanks for video
iOS 17 does support Wireless CarPlay so it depends on the car. You’ll have to check with the manufacturer to see if your model supports it 🤓
What about the clean up! Take about asleep at the wheel literally under the coastguard stations nose.
Great video, but what does Cross Fade actually do?
Thank you! Sorry I should have explained, I assumed everyone knew.
Basically it fades the current song into the next song without a gap.
