One of the things I love about climbing is the separation in ability between the elite men and women is so marginal its practically non existent. Proven perfectly again here with a near effortless female ascent on one of the worlds hardest routes
Well, it depends on the route usually right? Some problems which have very reachy, powerful moves would be impossible for many women, unless they can find a new beta. The crucifix move on La Dura Dura for example, is a huge filter which prevents many shorter people from advancing on the route. I guess that's more of an issue for short people in general than women in particular, but there are very few elite elite male climbers around the 5ft mark, whereas many professional female climbers, including Laura Rogora, hover around that height. All that being said, I do agree with your general sentiment, and I love that there's not much separating men and women on many routes!
@@maximillianreichel1748 you made a great point by dividing it into height rather than gender. And then blew it again. Its more about height, weight and ape index than anything else. Climbing shows that theres no gender gap. Only different role models.

Sure, men and women are built differently but that doesn't really mean one is better then the other when it comes to climbing. Males who tend to be taller and more powerful are great on some type of problems while women tend to be more flexible, be lighter and have smaller fingers. I don't think we are far off from the first women to push into 9c and beyond and find routes which are impossible for the best males to climb. When it comes to competition I don't think it is impossible to compete between the genders but you will need to have really good routesetters for it to be interesting.
@@Swansniff2 I mean, look at the comment by Stefano: at a section where he had to jump, she could push on, because she could hold the small crimps. Both methods are tiring and difficult in different ways (and I think jumping there is probably scarier, but trying to hold on where some cant even see the holds...). It shows how important technique and problem solving really is.
I'm so excited to see the gender gap getting closer and closer! Right on Laura!!! In my opinion; my favorite thing about climbing is that men and women are so close in capabilities. And I believe in the coming few years (or months?) that Gap will be zero. We are all humans, and humans are designed to climb.
I love seeing the gender gap getting smaller and smaller, but still we forget not to only watch the top climbers but the distribution of climbers. Unfortunately we're still very far from finding as many women climbing as strong as the same number of men.

If this was a 50/50 mix, I don't think there would be any Gap at all. I guess the big thing to remember is; the best climber in the world is probably somebody who has never tried to climb.
It was only four years ago that Margo sent Biographie, and we have subsequently seen multiple women tick the grade and push the edge further. Laura’s send just confirms that it isn’t just about ability, but also knowing that the ability ceiling isn’t as low as you thought. Think Tommy spending 7 years on the dawn wall, and Ondra putting it down in nine days. Once you know it’s possible, it becomes more accessible. There’s a whole slew of women out there that will see this and rethink what is possible. What a time to be alive as a climber.

Of course, it just might be someone just starting out that we don't know about yet.

You see the gap getting smaller and smaller just because climbing is getting more and more popular and you can see that little fraction of the elite. You are hypothesizing that the best female climber did not yet start climbing. For that I think we could have at least four stronger than Ondra.

man, in my current project I gotta link 10 moves in a row without resting; last one is hardest. Seeing her doing this like 5x in a row on a single route, knowing 90%+ of these moves are harder then my actual crux move is just I N S A N E. No powerscreaming, no chickenwings; just smooth, concentrated, delicate climbing. Unbelievable - congratulations Laura! Keep sending.
It brings me unfathomable joy. The fact woman and men are neck and neck in not only a sport, but a strength adjacent sport. This is a level of athleticism only an elite few with elite genetics, and work ethic, regardless of gender, get to experience.
Just look at Stefano’s video, the jump is between 5th and 6th quickdraw. It seems she found a left heelhook and left undercling before reaching with right hand.

Laura started to win some comps and in the same time crush 9a, 9b+ so the most completed athlete at this moment is Laura. Don't forget who climb 9a after traveling from Japan.... Janja didn't climb too much outside, but she managed to send two 9a in a row, in a matter of a few days. She can definitely climb 9b, but till now her focus has been indoor, where she smashed all records. Ghisolfi also focused on indoor climbing for a long time, and then he started to send the most difficult routes outside. Janja has an incredible potential to do crazy things outside. In my opinion Janja is the best female climber in the world, also the most complete. I hope we'll see her climbing on the rock much more often. I'm not a fan of indoor competitions.

Looking forward to see some high-quality (like for many male climbers) contents that reflect her incredible achievements
Pretty sure it was Stefanos choice to make so many different videos. If Laura wants to she can do the same. Also, this is uncut raw footage a few days after the send. Don't know yet what other footage may come from the other camera people.
Sometimes climbers don't want an expensive film crew out there. Climbing can be a very personal thing and having a big film crew can add a lot of pressure.
Well, one word: sponsors. Laura can't afford yet to have a cameraman all around her. Ondra can afford a troupe. But if she push the boundaries like that, she will soon get the attention and the sponsors she deserves. She needs to focus on rock climbing. This is still a very poor sport.
Amazing achievent! I have no doubt that women may even surpass men in some styles of climbing. Now on another topic though (and I don't mean to reduce Laura's achievements), but.... When is someone going to talk about / address her obvious very underweight status? quite possibly disordered eating?

It is impressive what laura does, but i would argue Not sustainable. Check the light documentary here on UA-cam if you think climbers are generally just skinny but healthy, Performance is not always a measure of Health ….

Peggior video di arrampicata mai girato. Telecamera fissa. Un bastone in mezzo al video così il fotografo aveva la luce che voleva per le foto. Fotografo che ovviamente è nell’inquadratura metà del tempo… Laura brava ma la prossima volta fatti dare la troupe che segue Stefano…

La giornata era pensata per delle foto a Laura nei suoi tentativi, il video è stato improvvisato vedendo quanto era andata vicina nel tentativo precedente.
