Btw Magik is one of Hell’s rulers. Hell have nine circles and limbo is one of them so that will make her almost on par with marvel devils or beings that grow stronger and they own dimension such as Hela, Meph, and Darma
"Histories of Magik" really need to stop referencing the terrible Truth or Death miniseries. It's non-canon since Marvel has since made it clear that the child who contracted the Legacy Virus was never the same Illyana who grew up to become Magik but the alternate version the New Mutants found in Limbo during Inferno, meaning that the whole Mikhail storyline cannot be how the kid got the disease. Truth or Death's only real purpose was to try to say that Illyana was really deaged to close off the most commonly cited way she could easily return, and it ignored continuity and had Illyana and others act extremely out of character to do it. The kid version caught the Legacy Virus because it was moving through her part of Russia, not because of anything one of her brothers did. It's much better to forget it was ever written. Also, Illyana didn't use her powers to go back to Limbo to confront Belasco. Belasco dragged her back to Limbo the moment she first accidentally escaped, took away her mutant power to make her helpless, and left her alone in a blizzard for a year. She had to confront confront Belasco not because she had an "axe to grind," but because it was the only way for her to escape for real. She did not "take out Belasco for good" either, but spared his life when she saw that she was transforming into a demon herself. There's a lot of facts this video gets wrong. The Soul Skinner did not seek Illyana out to use her. It was the Russian government that killed her parents and kidnapped her to use her against the Soul Skinner.
Good stuff, comments like this always help creators improve their craft, im sure Zap will consider a more chronological and consistent timeline of events when going through character storylines, he's still new but I see a 500k+ creator here, good vid overall
Thank you so much for saying that - it means a lot. Today is the 1 year anniversary of when I started this channel and it is so incredible to see how much it has grown since then.
Okay kinda skipped on whole alternate Storm and Cat lore. So when Xmen came to save Illyana, due to limbo having it's own fucked up concept of a time, basically splitted Xmen into two possibilities. So it's not your usual multiverse thingy. In one possibilities, Xmen saved Illyana, hooray. But in the other possibility, Xmen was trapped in the limbo for who knows how many years. Colossus dead, Kitty becoming feral-like(but also a great fighter), Storm used her time in limbo to learn limbo magic instead of relying on her powers(limbo was wiping away mutant genes), kirt was sadly brainwashed by Belasco, becoming his pawn. This version of Storm manages to create sanctuary within limbo where even Limbo's ruler Belasco himself couldn't detect with his magic. So this version of Storm manages to rescue Illyana and taught her limbo magic. At some point I think kitty joined them and taught her close combat, it's been so long I am not sure. I think they spent possibly some years in there training Illyana. When they were ready, they learnt one of the possible places that the walls between dimensions that was thin enough to open the portal back to their own plain is actually inside Belasco's castle. So they had to infiltrate back. But as usual, they get caught, kitty gets mind controled like how it says in the video and this magic using storm gets killed. After this escape plan failed, writers didn't know how to end this storyline I guess, so they just said she had mutant genes like her brother and her mutant genes allowed her to open a portal anywhere!. When she finally escaped, remember that the Xmen were split into two possibilities? Well that is what happened to Illyana as well, turns out. So when this version of Illyana who spent years training in limbo came back, she was basically fused with version of Illyana who was safely saved by the Xmen. So while she had memories of both possibilities, she returned to her child body. This weird logic was applied I guess because original intent was to kinda return Illyana to status quo? But I guess someone at editorial board realized they are missing on huge opportunity to turn Illyana into marketable character rather than helpless kid again. So they kinda went back and said actually, due to limbo, time, magic shenanigans, Illyana aged rapidly to her age when she was in limbo! And can use all the magic she learnt in the limbo!
If we're staying ahead of marvel rivals characters, consider Angela for a future vid. Such an interesting character with an interesting custody battle lol.
I was 10 years old when I read this comic during this miniseries original release. And while some of the esoteric concepts went over my head at that time, Illyana's experiences in limbo made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Years later when New Mutants Vol 1 71 during the crossover Inferno event Magick's backstory felt even more uncomfortable . In the issue Illyana shows the team her past time in Limbo when they teleport back in time. And the seen is of the demon S'ym chasing her down, grabbing and knowing her out( really extreme imagery for it's time) and walking away with her limp body. She is saved by the demon N'astrah(sp?) at that moment. Based on the body language of the adult Illyana, she experienced some really tragic shit on other occasions. From my research into the backgrounds of differing arcane related mystery systems, I believe Illyana's history in limbo alludes to SRA. as her character possesses many of the hallmarks of SRA victims. Louise Simonson's run as writer for this series occasionally had some deep subtextual shit added to the stories.
Pretty surprised you skipped Iliyanas and pixies relationship considering how impactful it was on both of them. It really felt like their relationship alone was the biggest drama / conflict across the issues I read of Magik
@@ZapZoomZing no problem, I loved the video! You should consider covering the lore in Marvel Rivals. There's a lot of it and there's even a companion mini series comic for the game
Knew about Magik for years probably around the time of Xmen vs Avengers with the Phoenix stuff ( definitely a little before that) but didnt really KNOW her. Getting bits and pieces here and there.
Wow, this is so incorrect on so many levels. I completely lost it at the part where Warlock's father Magus, the multi-story tall technoorganic alien fought them, but the art shown was all the Adam Warlock enemy with the same name.
imagine if in marvel rivals magik would teleport certain amounts of enemies in limbo fight them to death with her limbo form and come back to map alone
Marvel Rivals got me watching lore videos on characters I didn’t know much about. That’s how you know a game is successful.
when i learned that she was part of the xmen, i was disapointed that she was never in those xmen rpgs for the ps2
Frrr
I only know Magik from the Midnight Suns game and Marvel Rivals, so i knew she was messed up but i didn't know HOW messed up. I love her.
Behold darkchild!
I always hear it as: “behold, duckchild” 😭

Very cool!
The CEO of limbo is a hot goth chick. Nice.
Brilliant presentation. Magik definitely needs more spotlight 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😎

I'll be sure to leave a thumbs down then! Thanks for clarifying this dudes inconsistencies

I hope Anya Taylor-Joy gets another chance on this character. "The New Mutants" was an awkward movie.

Man magik's story is a roller coaster of insanity and trauma. Always knew of magik but nothing this extensive. Really cool video.
Thanks for the quick flashback!!
I'm here because I made Magik my main in Marvel Rivals.
Magik is Back
I actually read this in her Rivals voice lol

I think they are going to do something like this for Nightcrawler
How did I just NOW learn of this character?
I still don't quite get what is her mutant power. Her connection to Limbo or her soul being a sword? That sounds more mystical than a mutant power.
its just the stepping disks
The portals
Take a shot every time you hear the word soul
“Pet play” was a bad summary of that 😭
Is the soul skinner Omega Red as well?
The goat
I personally loved extraordinary x men. I really liked Sapna
Nice! What comics do you have on the go?
Whats exactly her mutant power

Limbo is an analogy and an alegory for Illyana's traumas. People tried sexual abuse on her.
