One of the most underrated legends of rock.
perhaps the most
He is not underrated... ranked 35th (I think...) best guitarist by Rolling Stone magazine.
You really get a good impression of how big a part of SY's sound Thurston was when you hear him on his own
he still sounds like 30 years ago its awesome
Simon Robeyns It really is! Having a much cleaner lifestyle then the traditional rock lifestyle probably has a lot to do with it
KEXP sessions always sound so crisp and amazing!
Deb Googe from My Bloody Valentine on Bass!
Correct.
Wooooow!
If you are reading this and didn't know who the hell are my bloody valentine, go light a joint and put loveless at max level volume right now
@@pg6917 or just listen to it sober.
@@formerlyskidsinmyute i don't recommend that
That sound is so fucking amazing
I love Thurston Moore! Such an unique guitar player.
No love for Steve Shelly? :/
*a unique. Come on man, you teach English.
He really is. Sonic Youth are my favorite band of all time, and I’ve loved his solo stuff since Psychic Hearts came out. I find it fascinating that he’s said in interviews that he really doesn’t know how to play guitar, in the traditional sense. He’s said he can’t play basic barre chords, or open chords, which is why he developed his method of tuning alternatively. He’s said his older brother was a decent guitarist, but he’s never been able to play traditional chords.
I saw him perform at the knitting factory in NYC some time in the mid 90’s. His guitar playing that night blew my sonic mind apart! On certain parts of his solo that night, I swore it sounded like 2 genius guitarists playing at once.
Only plays a detuned guitar mind
I love Steve's happy oldman face. He seems so innocent.
Yeah, he looks like he does thurston moore's homework xD
Speak to the Wild is so beautiful. The hook will not leave my head.
1:10 Germs Burn
6:33 Detonation
9:34 Interview
18:04 Speak to the Wild
26:43 The Best Day
I have a Germs burn
Steve Shelley looks like a cool math teacher but he's one hell of a drummer!
Steve Shelley looks like a cool math teacher and he's one hell of a drummer! :)
Shelly is the striking "educator"...Top ...! :)
He is an amazing musician no doubt.
There is no big difference between a drummer and a mathematician anyway :)
@@petrosbright if you can’t count to four you can land on the moon
I just love Steve's drumming. One of my favs!!!!
Thurston Moore is a genius!
Kinda breaks my heart when Thurston Moore introduces a member of his band from Stoke Newington (where I used to live), just makes me think that if I'd been in the right place at the right time...
yeah what?
doesn't mean a thing
He means that he could have been that guy... where the fuck is your reading comprehension?
are you as good as james?
I used to live there back in 2011, great neighborhood. Could have been cool meeting the guys at the pub. I think Thurston moved there a couple years later. Cheers mate!
thurston + steve shelley. sonically youthful.
Valentine needs to be there
That's the bass player from my bloody valentine.
@@JBmusicart - Correct.
@@NOWtheband lol. Not looking for your affirmation.
@@JBmusicart - ha ha ha. I see.
Thank you Thurston for keepin' the Sonic spirit alive and well.
His wife was the soul. He wanted his dick in something younger. She is now moving forward playing better/more original stuff. She brought out best record of 2019.
@@marneymacleod2463 - You like Kim. Sebastian likes Thurston. Both valid.
Why not like what you like and allow others the same.
;-)
You are right. I had a few drinks and was emotional about being cheated on. Still, Kim is still my fave before and after. I shouldn't make people like who I like. When I met them, Thurston was actually the most friendly and I spoke to him the most. Usually, I love everyone and all should try to do the same. Thankyou for correcting my need for judgement. X
@@marneymacleod2463 - Good on you for making a decent reply. I admire that!
Bests to you!
:-)
this is the magic band. Would love to hear another from this lineup.
I met Thurston in a lift in Plymouth, UK. Just him and me for about 45 seconds. He probably thought I was pretty weird as I told him I knew who he was, he had a beard as well. It was around the time he did this.
Thurston Moore has put out so much great music since SY quit. He's so damn prolific. The Chelsea Light Moving album is fantastic!
Sweet. Title track was killer; beautiful riffage, great guitar harmony, nicely timed injections of melody, harkens back to those awesome moments on the best Sonic Youth records.
I've really liked Thurston's albums after SY. They do sound like SY but SY sounds like Thurston. Great little band he put together after going it alone.
Thurstoon's pick flying at 04:19, nice reaction lol
I love how they just pull out of that beautiful mud at 4:34 and skip away. Very nice.
Such a great performance. The guitars these guys play are so cool. Bass player is bad ass. Love that bass guitar too.
Hace unos años cuando lo descubrí quedé atrapada. Maravilloso ❤️🎤🎸
How did I miss this? I actually played at kexp live once! One of the best experiences I've had playing live.
Wow!! Very surprised how damn great this is!! I learned not to expect anything less than brilliance from Thurston Moore....ever!!
Excellent music once again from KEXP (yes, I know it's from 2014 but honestly they've never stopped). And congratulations to the sound engineer - once again. This is an album quality mixing and production.
Are you Thirstin' for More!?
+Ben L Yes
are you me?
Is that a home alone reference??
" Did you guys give up yet? Or are you thirstin for Moore?"
Ha... Fuckin' internet.
no he is stephen hawkin without his wheelchair and talking computer
amazing and epic guitars
Just as good as I expected. Actually better!
Best gig I've seen this year
I don't know how he does it. For me he is better than any other musical artist, in terms of the number of times he has managed to create something that really hits a nerve. I think it must have something to do with whatever is deep inside him, a feeling, idea and form of communication that is totally unique and so rich. I mean there is the guitars, musicians and equipment he uses but beyond that, even just the sound and the quality of it. It's immense and intense. I can only pray that one day I get to see him live with a band and for him to play all those songs I love. One of my life's hopes. Without doubt a special human. And also Steve Shelley.
this is actually good, I didn't expect it. And Thurston aged really well, I have to say
he looks 18 at one angle but looks 54 at another
Television is not dead ("Speak to the wild") !
Thurston is still punk rock. yeaaaa buddy..
Amazing sound ! Eternal youth !
Amazing! Thurston is a genius
Sempre qdo vejo esse cara tocando tenho vontade de chorar, porq eram tempos difíceis, más tínhamos alegria em ouvir sua antiga banda! Era uma outra época, outro modo de vida!
They sound great live and this relatively short set they played in the KEXP studio is a perfect example of this.
love this album. I can listen to it over and over.
Thurston and Debbie, télescopage du 3ème type entre deux légendes d'expérimenteurs jusqu'au boutistes : Sonic youth et My bloody valentine. J'attends mon best day! Et merci KEXP pour toutes ces sessions live mise à disposition. c'est génial.
I watched this the night it was uploaded. blown away then. blown away now
F**k I'm sold. I've been a Sonic Youth fan since 1991, and this sounds like elevated stuff.
This is sooooo GOOD!
just a bloody excellent perf i say !!!
que banda sensacional......
Thurston has a very pleasant voice.
Incredible set. What a treat.
Whoa, Debbie from MBV! I always used to think she was a fox.
+Kelly Moon she's a great musician. looks dont matter. I got a kiss from her when I interviewed her at a show in Toronto years ago! lol. (admittedly the years havent been as kind to her as Bilinda... *sigh, bilinda, heart flutter*)
Well, looks don't matter really, but in her prime she was REALLY DAMN HOT. I've never really heard anyone express that opinion. I'm sure she's super cool too, and I love most of her bands.
+Kelly Moon I thought she was a man, shame on me. He/she plays cool anyway...
+Kelly Moon Do they EVER show her in the video? All they show is Thurston, Steve and James!
She's in it briefly.
So cool to hear a New Wave guitar band,” especially with such skilled players.
+Dave Caughley Thurston's JM is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
Awka Liwen Neils Cline 59’ black one is such a beauty of authentic relic too :-)
Amazing songs and style, so good !
Saw Thurston Moore Band last night in Burlington, VT. So good!!
So good, it warms my heart when musicians from the eighties and nineties don't lose their cream.
It’s gonna make me lose my cream
this record is so amazing, I'm mos def thirstin' for moore
Quel bonheur ce set avec ce line-up tout à fait parfait ! Incroyable aussi la créativité continue de Moore et la classe de Shelley...
thanks KEXP for my band fv moore more years
these guys are so awesome.
Wow, Just discovering this. Rock on!
Thanks
Saw this guy for the first time in Primavera Sound. Great show. I already liked the record and live it was a good show for sure. It's funny to me at least that this records has a huge Sonic Youth vibe to it but can still sound fresh and new
Long night
Negative light
Start a fire
Stop a fight
Germs Burn Lyrics are so Thurstonic !!
It's clearly excellent tone, tight and fucking brillant music !
Simply fresh deep and beautiful...nyorker in london..Great!
That first song dudes is awesome. Glad to hear you from the very first time.
The best radio performance in this year! A futurist victory for improvisational noise music.
Genios!!! Tienen que venir a Argentina!
such a great drummer!!
His playing makes me think of rainbows
so great
Woah I would love to be called a legendary guitarist by Thurston Moore
OMG the end of Germs Burn is so bad ass. I had to replay it 6 times. Trying to figure out how they get that sound.
It takes a geriatric riot to get me out of bed right now.
You made my day
Why doesn't this comment have more likes?? Lmfao
@@re-animator7868 Prob cause it's insulting and ageist.
Beatle #9 or it makes it seem like only older musicians can make truly riotous music
@@thedude2122 It's better than the sterile 'music' of todays youth but still lacking melody. Check out my stuff Space Engineer (band)
Fantastic!!!
Yes, please.
Always great.
Playing a guitar like that, he must go through a new set of strings every day
You'd be surprised, you kinda get used to beating guitar strings and it is kinda like you just have to hit it a certain way that prevents it from breaking. It could have a lot to do with the guitar he uses though too. I have a few different ones and some are more likely to break strings than others, though one one in particular something needs to be filed down because it's always a 1.5 step bend on the high e string that breaks it and it never breaks strings on my other guitars. But I tend to strum/pick pretty damn hard when I play a lot of things, and it's not very common I break strings usually.
Sorry I know I edited that comment a few times, I just wanted to state one more thing. The biggest thing by far is learning what you can get away with on what guitar/s you're using. That's the way I should've worded it from the start, I have no clue why I didn't word it like that before. Basically some guitars can take a massive beating and others a re more delicate. I have an old peavey guitsr from the 80s that breaks strings way too often, but my tele is less frequent, and my strat almost *never* breaks a string. On my tele and strat I tend to end up changing the strings before they break, and that's with intense string beatings lol)
Reminds me of The Fall in several places. good stuff.
Saw them in Glasgow last night. Talk about full on ... they were excellent.
Big shout out too for the support band, Glasgow's very own, Curdle. Ideal support band for TMG.
Amazing!!!
So good!
That was great!
this is awesome
Amazing
amazing
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
saw them in luxembourg few month ago, maybe the best gig of the years
man, this sounds clean
Germs burn es increible!!
this is mesmerizing
Whoa. Incredible.
Dear lord!!! the fuckin end of Detonation was fantastic!!!! x.x
Always Great
Lol Thurston loses his pick at 4:18 but recovers like a boss!
TheXxaddictxX I don't think I've ever seen a "professional" guitarist reach into their pocket for a pick in that situation...I guess having a pick clip on the mic stand would be too much of a sell out thing for him to use...
+possumverde I can't comprehend this comment. That band he's most famous for signed to a major label in 1990. Surely that's more sell out than a pick holder?
Robbie Broome
But...it was OK to sell out in the 90's...wasn't it? I mean...everybody did it...
(and I've seen footage of gigs where he does use one... _edit: with Sonic Youth..._ I was trying to be a smart ass because of what he did to Kim...)
+possumverde Divorce is often messy business
A beautiful floating girl....with a Mohawk ♨ sums up Thurston and Co.
some people play music, these dudes MAKE music
Mom! I really do not need guitar lessons! I want to play like Thurston Moore!
Always creative and hip!
so good
How Good!!!!!!
The guy w/the gold guitar played with This Heat in Redhook Brooklyn a few years ago. He was one of three guitars in that band & he was great.
