Can we suggest companies to begin the process leading to certification immediately on their own? Process can take even a lengthy period running to few years. Many benefits can accrue for the company from day one. Can I have your blessings for this idea which I practice as a consultant?

SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is an ethical audit procedure that demonstrates ethical trade and decent work. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, publishes globally recognized standards on a large variety of topics including social responsibility (such as ISO 26000), environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and quality management systems (ISO 9001). Audits are a vital part of ISO management system standards as they enable an organization to check how far their achievements meet their objectives and show conformity to the standard. Even for other, non-certification standards, auditing can be a useful tool to help identify areas of improvement.
Another commonality is that both SMETA and the relevant ISO standards build on the ILO labour standards and other pertinent international conventions.
In summary, one could say that both SMETA and ISO promote ethical and social compliance in supply chains, and help organizations of various sizes and sectors to improve their performance, meet customer expectations, and demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility.

Audits are a vital part of the management system approach as they enable the organization to check how far their achievements meet their objectives and show conformity to the standard. “Third-party” means that an audit is performed by a body that is independent of the audited organization and has no user interest in the object of the audit (for example a product or service provided by the organization that is being assessed). ISO 9001 is a globally recognized standard for quality management. It helps organizations of all sizes and sectors to improve their performance, meet customer expectations and demonstrate their commitment to quality However, ISO does not issue certificates or certify individual companies to any standard. Instead, certification bodies, which are independent of ISO, grant certification. Any organization that meets the requirements of ISO 9001 can apply for certification from such a certification body.
When choosing a certification body, you should:
- Evaluate several certification bodies.
- Check if the certification body uses the relevant CASCO standard (see www.iso.org/committee/54998/x/catalogue/p/1/u/0/w/0/d/0)
- Check if it is accredited. Accreditation provides independent confirmation of competence. However, accreditation is not compulsory, and non-accreditation does not necessarily mean the certification body is not reputable. To find an accredited certification body, contact the national accreditation body in your country or visit the International Accreditation Forum CertSearch: www.iafcertsearch.org/search/certification-bodies.
