This is really helpful, and I was able to get my iMac to work as a second display for my Macbook. Question for you - when I plug my Macbook in to charge, it kicks off as a second display. I'm not able to get it to work again until I unplug from charging. Anyone else have this issue? Solutions?
I don’t have an answer ( I no longer have my old iMac), but I’ll pin your question. They video gets a lot views. Thank you!
Channel has newer vids for M1, but I don't recommend them 100% for professional video/photo work
I have a 2012 iMac no longer in use. Nothing wrong with monitor. I am wanting a 2024 Mini Mac. Are these compatible & what do I need to link them together? Co$t?
Please turn the background music down. Great information
I was trying to do something like this with my MacBook Air M1 and 2013 iMac. I just realized tonight I can just use Mission Control and the built in Mac screen sharing to complete something similar. Just turn on Mission Control on your Apple Silicon device. Connect to your iMac via screen sharing. Put the iMac screen share in full screen. Now you can 3 finger swipe between the two screens and control your iMac with your MacBook trackpad. Both computers are running at the same time but it's like having dual monitors. You can also transfer files between the two devices or create more virtual desktops to swipe through. Another option is to add a second monitor to either computer and use the same setup if you prefer to use the MacBook closed. Free no cables or apps to download. Can also add iPad in side car mode to the M1.
hi, i am planning to buy m3 macbook air. I have an iMac (late 2012) at home and would like to turn it into an external display for new m3 macbook air. Will your method above mentioned work well for this setup? thanks
For everyone who owns more recent iMac Retina display the cable solution WON'T work. But you can do it using a tiny device called "Luna Display" which cost the same as those 2 cables. I'm not sponsored or anything :-) I just try to find videos about it, videos that show clearly if this devide works or not but each time I end up with youtuber using the cable method with too old iMac as an exemple...
Mine is 2015 Retina 27" iMac and Luna display seems to be the best solution so far. It requires a good wifi connection apparently but I cannot find out how good.
Maybe Jaime can test this for us :-)
Hope this can help!
Would love to see an updated version for connecting iPad Air 4 with Imac.
When you use the Thunderbolt to USB-C Adaptor and the Thunderbolt Cord in this video, are you able to use the camera, speakers and microphone built into the iMac? Or are you only limited to use the camera, speakers, and microphone of your MacBook? I am hoping to initially use my iMac as the main display for a new Mac Studio Max. Thanks!
No, iMac is just a display. Congrats on the Mac Studio, but this dongle will not work. Other vid on the channel discusses M1 dongle (it might be in the description)
Thx ,very helpful because I didn't know how to do it.
Just keep in mind this is for older Mac models. Before M1 or 5K
Thanks for the video... can I ask where you got your desk?
Macy’s Furniture Store ☺️
Hi Jamie, great video! Wondering which MacBook you are using?
I have tried the exact same chords (as well as multiple others!) with my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) to my display screen: iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5", Late 2015). At this point I've given up hope for an external Macbook to have an external display.
I appreciate the comment very much! unfortunately, 4K/5K, or M1's aren't compatible for this setup, just older iMacs/MacBooks. Apple disable Target Display Mode with these newer models. However, explore the comments here--many have found 'screen sharing' workarounds or recommend Luna Display (its a dongle). I've been edging on purchasing a Luna Display to test this out for everyone. Hope this response earns a Subscribe :-) take care.
@@JaimeJMarrero Ahh, thank you very much! So so helpful, i'll keep perusing comments. The Luna Display looks interesting, i'm going to do some more research into that. Appreciate your reply!
Hey Jamie, thanks for all wonderful tech solution you’re offering!
I have an iMac 2019 and I want to use it as monitor for pc (laptop). Do you think Luna display is gonna work?
I do appreciate your help
Luna yes, dongles in this video do not
question: I am looking into buying a Apple Studio, will the display for for the Studio or will I have to buy a cinema display?

Only for mirroring or can split monitor? If can split, can it be split over more than one monitor display?
My device : MacbookPro 2012 ... Imac 2012... Samsung Monitor..
Can be set up to all this display?
Thanks in advance

Hey Jamie beautiful and informative video. I purchased and iMac mid 2014 21.5 inch and I have an old MacbookPro 2014 13inch. Both have thunderbolt connection, i I used Thunderbolt to HDMI, from iMac to MacBook, (didn’t work) also purchased Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable, non Apple brand, (didn’t work). I’be read most of your comments below. I just want to confirm that do I really need Apple brand Thunderbolt cables for this method to work? Please inform
Hey! I believe that with the 2014 iMac it should work with thunderbolt cables. I literally just uploaded a video on my Chanel where I made it work with a 2009 iMac through thunderbolt and mini DisplayPort...feel free to check it out 😁
Yea, in my experience we can't skimp out on the cables. I just got the AirPods Max and got a Headphone Jack/Lightning cord from Amazon and it doesn't work...so had to buy the $35 Apple version 😑. Sounds like you have the perfect combo of computers, so it should work and if it doesn't its prob the choice of dongles.
Thanks. just what I wanted to know.
EXCELLENT AND VERY COMPLETE INFO THANK YOU!! You seems very nice person 😎👍
I try to be 😌, and thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! it was SUPER helpful and simple!

Hey Jaime great video!, I would like to know if this will work with a Macbook Air M1 (BigSur) and a late 2012 iMac (Mojave)? Thanks
Sorry, not M1. See description or Channel for more accurate solution
Hi there, thank you for the video. Is the purpose of this to get one bigger screen, or does it work like dual monitors where you can use both screens back and forth? Thanks.
Yes it does
HI Jaime, Very helpful video. Question: In connecting iMacA to iMacB, is there a minimum year or MacOS version that would not work ?
Yes, anything that supports M1 and beyond. This video is 4+ years old
I have a late 2013 15" Macbook pro and a late 2012 27" iMac I use at a holiday home. I'd like to use the iMac as the main monitor. Can I do that using the Macbook, using the Apple USB 3 to T2 & Thunderbolt cables you advise or would I be better off buying a new Mac mini and using the iMac as the main monitor. If so would I use the same cables?
I would use the suggested the dongles for your holiday home. The Mac minis will need a different dongle if you want to use the iMac as a screen. Video on that is in the description or on my channel. Thanks for the view and let us know what you chose 🙂
Jaime - What would you suggest for an iMac (Mojave - Retina 5k, 27-inch 2017) and a MacBook Pro (Catalina - Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)? I don't really care which one is the primary screen and which is the secondary, just trying to use them together. Thanks!
Hi Josh@ I don't have a 5K version, so I have not run into this myself but I do know that Apple does not support Target Display for the newer iMacs. Based on the comments here Luna Display from Astropad would be the way to go. astropad.com/product/lunadisplay/
@@JaimeJMarrero Thanks!
Thanks for this great explanation. Are you using a Thunderbolt 2 cable?
NB: I guess you mean hale a meter, not half a millimeter 🙂...
I just used Screen Sharing on both my iMac Early2009 and MacBook Air Early 2015. Made sure that they were both on the same network. This worked to get my MacBook Air image on to my iMac. Didn't have to buy anything!
Can you explain how to do screen sharing?
@@shirleyhampton7721 Click on Apple icon in top left hand corner. Go to System Preferences. Click on Sharing Folder. Click on turn on Screen Sharing. Both devices have to be on same wifi network. Good Luck!
@@GaryEisenberglol6 right but thats not what he's doing here, you're talking about using your Macbook screen on your iMac. This situation is using the iMac as a SECOND screen, so you have two screens, not a mirrored one screen.
@@GaryEisenberglol6 Thanks for these instructions! Works just how I need
didn't you have a lag?
Extremely good video production quality 👌
Appreciate it! Its been a full year now of learning.

It will not, read the video description for alternate solution.
Loved this, exactly what we needed. Went to Best Buy 3 times and none of the employees can help us!

This is so frustrating. I’ve purchased so many chords in the last few weeks and I cannot figure out how to use my iMac as a display! Curse you apple!

@@JaimeJMarrero I have a macbook pro 13 2015 and I want to connec it to my iMac 5k 2020 what do I need?
Any options for using the new iMac as a 2nd display for the MacBook, both running Big Sur? According to Apple, if running Big Sur, it is no longer possible to use the iMac as a 2nd display. The only option I’ve found is Screen Mirroring feature, however the MacBook display to the iMac ends up being about the same size as the MacBook screen making this workaround undesirable due to the small screen display size and wireless connectivity delay.
Thanks for the view and comment, I have another accessory I like to use that I showcase on newer videos on my channel- I believe this will do what you're looking for. Works with Big Sur and M1.
@@JaimeJMarrero what accessory is this? :)
Same issue here, love to see a solution
James Marrero @James Marrero, may i know what’s the solution?
So I bought these two cables and they didn't work. I have a windows keyboard being used for my iMac so I'm not sure if that's the issue since the shortcut might be different. Any suggestions are welcomed.
Hey thanks for the video. I have a 2017 iMac 5k with 2 TB3 ports + MacBook Pro 16” 2019 (non-M1) chip. Can a direct TB3 cable work? Or do I still have to buy both the adapters as mentioned in the video? Many thanks. ❤
wont work
Thank you for your video, i just bought a macmini m1 and i tried to connect to my imac 27 ( 2012 version ) with catalina 10.15.5. I will get the cables you mention, hope it works. I'll get back to you after i get those cables.
Thanks for the view, but unfortunately M1 is not compatible with this setup. Check out my channel where I find a different dongle that works.

Hi do you think I can connect my MacBook Pro with iMac as a secondary display only use 1 cable (Usb C to Thunderbolt 2) instead of 2 cables that you were explain in this video? Thank you so much !! Hope you can answer my question
Thanks for the comment. I’ve heard mixed things about that approach and it might have to do with the models of Macs involved. Thanks for watching!
Hi, awesome video. One question, are you sure you need an extra pair of Keyboard/mouse? (the Luna display homepage page mentions you only need 1 Keyboard/Mouse). Have you seen/heard any of this?
Yes, the Luna does not require separate mouse/keyboard. But the Apple dongles in this video do.
@@JaimeJMarrero Apple dongles you mean the thunderbolt 3 to 2 Adapter and the thunderbolt 2 cable? And if so, how do they require a new keyboard/mouse? Thanks for your time and patience btw.
EDIT: wait, you are not using Luna display at all in the video?

Thank you for the video. I have a 2010 21.5 inch iMac that I'm trying to use as an external monitor for my 2015 Macbook pro. Apparently my iMac model DOES NOT have target display mode...does that mean the method in your video won't work? I'm trying to research it on my own but am getting mixed answers and don't want to buy the cables until I know for sure. Thanks!
I'm fairly certain it does, but there's another method I have a video for that will work. Should be in the description of this video. Best of luck
So i´ll try to use my mid 2011 27" imac and connect it to my 2020 m1 mac book pro... what i don´t get just now ... is the thunderbolt cable is the same as USB-C? ... USB-C is the same as thunderbolt 2 or 3? i already have a USB-C to USB-C cable can i use it with an adaptor? if so it has to be the same you posted! thankkkksssss Jaime i´m a bit lost in here!
Hi Jessica, my channel has another video specific to the M1, I encourage you to watch them if you have time.
Any USB-C cable does not work, these are ‘Thunderbolt’. So although they look the same, they have more power. Your 2011 iMac won’t have USB-C, just the older Thunderbolt (looks like a Mini Display Port).
Hey thanks for the video. I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone. I’m currently trying this using the exact cables you have in the description on a (21.5 in Mid 2011 iMac, High Sierra 10.13.6) and a (2020 MacBook Pro Catalina 10.15.7). The keyboard that came with the iMac stopped working so I purchased a new Magic Keyboard (From Apple). I’ve also tried some of the troubleshooting you have mentioned in the comments. After many frustrating hours I was not able to get it to work. I came to the conclusion that this cannot be done using my 21.5 in Mid 2011 iMac or that it MUST be done with the keyboard that originally came with the iMac. Hope this helps and would be interested to hear how and if anyone was able to make this work using my same setup. Thanks!
Hi there! you need 2 key boards if you plan on using with the MacBook closed. The 2nd keyboard would be paired with the MacBook. Once you press the F2 the iMac keyboard can’t be used.
@@JaimeJMarrero Thanks for the response Jamie. I ended up buying an adapter that includes an HDMI port and purchased an HP Monitor from Best Buy (same cost as the cables lol). Really wanted to use the iMac but was too much of a headache in my case. Thanks for the great content, keep up the good work!
@@lorenzomartinez3205 Sounds like an amazing setup!
@@lorenzomartinez3205 Same problem here. From what I understand, the main issue with the 2011 iMac is that it has Thunderbolt 1 connectors and it seems you can only use Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt 2 but not Tb1. Anyone who found a solution, please feel free to share it with us. Duet Display won't work as it requires Mojave, Luna Display requires Catalina but the iMac 2011 is limited to High Sierra.
You could do a patch update to get majave and then it might work?
Hi! Thank you for your video. I have an iMac late 2015, intel core i5 with Big Sur. And a MBP 2020. Will this work?

Unfortunately it won't, but I have newer videos on my channel that will work for MacBook to MacBook compatibility. Thanks for watching!
why i need both a TB2 cable and an adapter? would not it make sense to purchase straight TB3 and save some money? also, on brand new Mac Air and iMac is there a way to do so wireless, or you still need a cable?
Old iMacs don't have USB-C ports and only have the TB2 that looks like a Mini Display Port. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

Hi Wanted to share my experience: I have a 2013 mackbook pro Big Sur. It only has a thunderbolt port and an HDMI port. My late 2015 Monterey Mac desktop has only thunderbolt ports (in regard to screen share). I tried using the cheaper amazon hdmi to thunderbolt converters (about $8-10) but that didn't work. I tried two different brands from amazon. I think that might need some settings check but I have no idea what to look for. Hoping it's not a Mac issue with the display featue that I read about somewhere else. I was able to disconnect the mouse from the iMac and connect it to the MBP, but it took a few tries. And, I have a usb keyboard that is working. But, when I close the laptop the iMac display goes to sleep. I did set the power saver to never, as instructed. Any thoughts?
Ok, was able to wake the display with the jiggle of the mouse. Thanks!!
Ahhh, sorry I didn't get to your comment in time, but glad you worked it out.
I paired my 27 inch 2009 iMac with my newer iMac via display port and it works. So far so good. But every 5 seconds or so it shows a black screen for a short time and the image is moving fast. Is this a problem with the monitor-iMac, my graphicscard or the cable?
I wish I had an answer! I’ll Pin 📍 this comment and hopefully someone will have an answer. I haven’t had issues, but all Macs are slightly unique!
hi thank you for all the info, do you know if we can do this with any laptop? I am trying to connect it to a DELL laptop
No, diff vid I have in the channel will work with Windows/Dell
very clearly explained well done dear
Appreciate it 🙏🏽
Hi! Can you use both screens at the same time when you connect your MacBook and Imac together as a dual-screen?
Thanks for watching and the comment! The answer is yes! If you want to close your MacBook it must also be connected to power or it will go to sleep. Again, appreciate it!
Great! Thanks for sharing this content!!
@@JaimeJMarrero OMG I wish I saw your video years ago! This makes a would of difference!!! But one thing that I can't figure out is, is there a way to make your windows shift both ways between the 2 monitors? If so, please share! Thanks again!!!
Hi, does it work on 2011 iMac and M1 Macbook Pro?
Hi, thanks for your video, very useful. Does this work using the 2020 macbook pro ?
Theres been a refresh of all the Macs this year! M1 or Intel? I have another video on the M1 line up ua-cam.com/video/B-z8JoukY8Q/v-deo.html
@@JaimeJMarrero Thanks i've seen your new video on M1 but i was still talking about using my old Imac (late 2010) as a screen monitor for my Macbook pro 2020. I see in some comments that what you do on this video with thunderbolt cables might not work with 2020 macbooks. Do you confirm?
@@olivierroux5332 If the 2020 is Intel it will work with the cords/adaptors if the 2010 iMac is able to run High Sierra
@@JaimeJMarrero Thanks ! Yes my late 2010 imac can run high sierra and my Macbook 2020 is Intel (early 2020). So it should work ?
Yessir! That’s how I got this set up to work and wanted to make it permanent 😅with a mini.
Hello Jaime, I have 2015 late iMac (Catalina) and have Macbook pro 2019(Ventura) will that works?
If the MacBook has Intel, yes
hi!
Through cable are there any lag? I've just installed Duet and in the wireless mode it's just unsuable for work. With the proper set of cables can it be smooth?
Doing same. Unusable. Lag. Frame rate is low. Occasional glitches. Not a smooth solution. (I tried this with USB-c cables and it was no better)
Hey, thanks for the video - I have a late 2019 model with a 4k display. Basically, I use a windows laptop for work and wanted to hook up my iMac to function as a display, but sadly it doesn't seem possible. Do you know if there's any hack whatsoever? Thanks
Read description, there should be a pc to Mac video. Like and subscribe
Do you know if this will work with a iMac Late 2013?
It will, but not with a MacBook M1. Check the channel for a updated solution for newer Macs
good video. Thanks -
Hiii love your video! I have a MacBook Air early 2015 and an imac early 2009. Do you think this would work?
Yep! Those seem to match up, just ensure the ports on the iMac have a USBC
@@JaimeJMarrero only usb 2 😭 maybe I can use an adapter usb3 to usb2?
hello i am just a little confused ,so i have a mid 2011 imac running High siera and a 2019 macbook running on big sur , will this method and cables be suitable for my devices ? love the video !!
Thanks for the view ☺️, the dongles from the video will work and they’re linked in the description
@@JaimeJMarrero thanks for the response, will this directly mirror what is happening on the macbook or will i be able to drag tabs over to to imac display ?
Hi Jamie. I’m not techy at all so bear with me. I have an old 2011 iMac with El Capitan, and looking to purchase a MacBook Pro or Air, something that will be able to act as duel screens would be amazing. Can you recommend what I should get, and where I may purchase if it has to be an older model laptop to pair? Any help would be appreciated thanks
The solution in the video will work for an Intel MacBook, but most new Macs are M1, so I recommend Luna. Links and videos are on the channel. Congrats on your next Mac 💻!
Thanks so much for replying 🙏 So when I look at the Pro there seems to be an Intel option that may work? www.apple.com/macbook-pro-13/specs/ And you’re saying the Luna will pair more recent other MacBook Pros (that may not typically pair just by themselves)?
The Luna will pair with both Intel/M1. It uses a wireless wi-fi connection. I would definitely go with M1 over Intel (unless you know you need Intel), but I encourage you to watch my video on Luna Display. Its a wireless connection that works across different Apple devices (even iPads!).
@@JaimeJMarrerowhy didn’t you provide this information in the video?? You never said anything about compatibility issues with silicon chips!
@@lukasnygaard3518 Video was created before Apple silicon, it is in the description.
I successfully display my MacBook screen to iMac, but I can't play sound on iMac, how to solve this problem? Thanks.
Unfortunately no, it only functions as a monitor in this mode and looses all of its iMac abilities--webcam, keyboard, and speakers etc.
The speakers work if you install the original software that the iMac came with, in my case a 2013 27 iMac running Mavericks and a 2019 16 MBP running Monterey
So using my macbook pro 2022 (m1 max) will not work together with my iMac late 2012 with this setup? :/
It won’t, the description has a newer dongle that works with M1
Hello, thanks for the video! Is there also a wireless option to do this?
Many in the comments have tried, but no luck as far as I'm aware 🙁
Impossible, also be aware of what kind of iMac you have I recommend you buying an adapter thunderbolt to hdmi
Sorry not very techy but does this set up allow you to use the iMac as a new monitor instead of your MacBook or does it allow you to use as a dual screen using the one mouse between both monitors?
2nd screen
