- A Long Island father is recounting his family's time on the log flume at Six Flags Great Adventure moments before the ride malfunctioned and injured two people.
Steven Thomas was not on the ride himself Sunday night. But his daughters and nieces were in the boat just ahead of the one that would be part of the accident.

PSA: if you notice something off when on a ride, say something to the ride operators AS SOON AS YOU GET OFF. They can emergency stop a ride if needed.
Right!!!! Instead of allowing others to be in harms way. Thank God they are all fine but it could have played out in a totally different way, and they could have saved someone else’s life.
Yes even the others watching and/or filming could have said something.
And now we know and knowing is half the battle...........
@@diva2459 They are not fine major injuries.
@@slimfeezy Yeahhhh go Joe!
I generally trust ride safety at "established", "permanent" theme parks, and distrust ride safety at places like the state fair. So for this to happen at Great Adventure is really bad.
And now El Toro at the same park partially derailed!!
This really isn't as bad as people are saying it is. Even if the whole fence broke, the log wouldn't be able to fall out.
The State Fair at least here has to be inspected everytime its reassembled.
By a State Inspector
You cannot just “trust”.
What state? California? yeah, I dont trust them either.
Water level in the splash pool was way too low. Water is the brake after the drop and the lack of a splash shows it’s low water. The boat should have lost its momentum long before the curve. Lack of maintenance or maintenance training. Where I’m from as the weather changes the weirs have to be adjusted to maintain proper water level. To high the boat stops to fast to low and well, see the vid.
Yea it did come in fast...good eye.
Thanks for explaining the mechanics of how the boat is supposed to be slowed down and not impact the area that separated when hit.
we have had way more rain than usual. so thats not it
@chrha youre clearly an idiot if you think the park relies upon rainwater to fill the sluice…i worked at BG in 1979 and the log flume has a water makeup system…
@@chrhadden amount of rain makes absolutely no difference in what this guy was saying. The ride is not depending on the rainfall for its water level. SMH
Luckily the ride didn't go off the rails, it could have been a lot worse !
There’s no “rails” on this ride.
@@NortheasternP.T.S. There were rails on the side
@@Lauren_Cat there’s no rails that the vehicle rides on.
@@NortheasternP.T.S. i think that was the point of the joke?
@@finecanine376Is this a joke or not? I honestly can’t tell 😂
To all the people who are curious as to what the ride is doing now. It’s being completely renovated. Track, fixed, water, fresher, tubes, tubeyer
The water being changed should be a normal yearly routine lol
Doesn’t seem like a malfunction it just seems that the rail was broken saying that you know like the flume system wasn’t wrong it was the rails
And....the railing is part of the ride and it very much looks like the railing malfunctioned.

I remember going to Great Adventure as a small child (7-8 years old)...and finding a $5 bill on the Log Flume... I'm 57 this year.
Maybe you'll find something to spend that $5 bill on this year!
If you invested those $5 in the S&P 500 that same day it would be worth just under $1.3k today!
Happy birthday 🎉
I think the true horror is the guy's haircut. 😢
It’s bringing back memories of old great adventure, many accidents such as the castle fire, lightning loops death, and the massive fights
I remember the Lightning Loops one. Horrible.
did you say massive fights? at an amusement park? now i'm intrigued lol
Ah, the good old days
@@flannelpillowcase6475 fighting happened a ton at this park back in the 80’s-90’s
I worked at a theme park. It is not easy being a ride operator. Safety tests are done before the rides open to the public to make sure everything is working correctly. I was a lift attendant on a roller coaster and was always ready to hit the stop button should it be necessary for me to do so.
Wow, it's been decades since I've been to Great Adventure since I don't live in New Jersey anymore. The log flume ride has been there forever! I remember riding it as a kid in the 1980s.
Remember the good old days when the ride would fly off the track, we would get up, shake it off, and do it again.
I really looked up the log ride for six flags because I was going soon and found this😀
Rip to my favorite water ride
WTF? Where is the video of the ride crashing?
Just place the font box right in front of what we're supposed to be seeing. Great coverage!
💯
I used to go to this exact place as a kid in New Jersey. 8 teenagers died at this place back in 1984. The Haunted Castle caught on fire.
That was really sad.
You have 16 year old kids running amusement parks. What could go wrong?
Worked at a similar ride at Six Flags in Valencia, CA. Glad to say, NOT one accident in three years. This is a surprise since the entire crew were a bunch of distracted teenagers.
They can be distracted though... These rides have no restraints, and the teenagers are just there to press a button once the riders are seated.
Oh my, that's my mom's favorite ride. To be honest I never really felt safe on it, I don't know it just gives me bad vibes. I hope they are alright.
Nevermind, it's a different six flags park. Not the one I go to.

Nothing at six flags feels safe. I will stick to universal
@@migomigo2595 Six Flags is probably safer than Universal, actually.
@@dogsinthedark yea right

It’s not easy to be a ride operator I honestly hope the dispatcher doesn’t lose his or her job they can’t see the ride from there point of view unless there is a video camera and he or she wasn’t paying attention and just kept the ride going ..ride operators are trained to Estop the ride especially if someone said something about the ride acting funny I would have Estopped the ride as soon as I heard that remark ..but that’s just me
Thats what I'm thinking, people always blame the ride op, even though in this situation it wouldn't be their fault at all.

I remember going on a similar ride to this at Busch Gardens. When I got all the way to the top, the log I was in just stopped. Somebody was helping me get out when I ended up, slipping back into my seat and the ride randomly started again. My log went flying all the way down the slide. It was such a scary moment for me. I didn’t know what else to expect or what was going to happen in that split second!
Do they not inspect the ride fully before opening for the day each day?
Everyday. The time and money they spend on safety is unbelievable. I'm shocked the park can make money
@64maxpower they obviously didn't do it right or they would have noticed that problem
@@kubotaman85 No, they wouldn't. Water level is set by a mechanic, after the ride has been inspected.
@@dogsinthedark They should be inspecting for any loose guard rails
@@kubotaman85 The guard rail became loose after the ride was inspected.
I used to work at their back in high school 1980... I worked in the ski bowl Barn and that was the first year they put in lightning loops. 😎
This is hardly a ride malfunction at all, all it was was a little fence piece snapping, and even then, the log couldn't fall out of the ride. Everyones making this look way worse than it is.
@Dude with Opinion still not too big of a deal
This is not the accident this is b4
This happened before the accident. In the accident, a boat capsized.
I couldn’t see anything for that close caption words were right in front of it
How did anyone get hurt?
Well tney should have told workers the broke rail then the other boat wouldn’t have went
We rode this ride literally the same week this happened and my hubby and I were talking about how they're going to have to either fix the ride up or tear it down because there are so many patches and fixes, we saw that loose gate bit but man, it got really bad in just a couple days. We rode on it afterwards and it's a little better but man, they gotta fix this ride. It doesn't even splash the bridge like it used to. My home videos from early 2000s look way different than my family videos from recently.
These inspectors will be held accountable. Every single day they're paid to do pretrip inspections. Absolutely negligent.
Perhaps
Something did happen. I've worked there. From my experience everyone took their job seriously and was over cautious. Sometimes to the point of being ridiculously over cautious

took the fam to this park long time ago, been on that ride. standing on the bridge is fun when the logs come down splashing a tremendous amount of water on people stranding on it.
See something say something and feel something say something.
If they went over they would still be strapped in and could've drowned
The log ride your not strapped in. You just get in and sit dwn.
That water is not even 2foot 🤦🏻♀️
That happened to someone a few years ago boat turned over and they drowned
Lol no, but they might become decapitated since there is no room to drown. Just metal pipe. Plus no straps, it's a pretty tame ride.
There wasn’t even a splash
My primary question in all of this. Is who did the fathers hair before his interview?? Who said, "that's fine."
Broken Rail? Totally a huge accident
Why is it that things never get fixed until something happens?
Im Alive never riding anything again. Dangling in the Air for hours is not Fun. Slipping down in the seat is terrifying. Finally got off. Feet on the ground. I collapsed out of Fear. Thank God. I Got stuck on a parachute ride.
I have Nightmares now.
And scared of Heights.
The railing was loose way before it was captured in this video
$$$ CHA CHING $$$
I dont understand. Now? The amusement park is going to do a full inspection?
Even these "safe" rides can still injure or even kill people. I would never get on an extreme thrill ride, but would have no problem with this one, and it still malfunctioned. I hope nobody was badly hurt.
What, no info about injuries or anything?

Isn't having a happy summer....🤔. First the rabit fox...Now a water ride malfunction. ..Stay safe fellow new jerseyans 💕 as well vacationers
Hey its their freedom to choose how they die how dare you take that right away from them by wishing them safety? Simply not american and unpatriotic
Don't forget about El Toro.
Steven looks like he is holding in an absolute killer lol
This is my fav ride
the railing the video shows moved was already severed and lose prior to their impact.. this was just a ticking time bomb, and this guy's girls got lucky they weren't the unfortunate log to be affected.
Thats it?
Yup, leave it to people to make it seem way worse than it is
My dad lost a cousin on an amusement park ride.
That railing clearly separated when the boat hit it. It already looked deformed, probably from being hit there every time a boat went through that area.
Lack of maintenance checks is why that happened
Its not a malfunctio! That ride is at least 40 years old, its wear and tear and sometimes as an owner of an amusement park then u need to think more about safety and less about money, bring in a new ride stop with the nostalgia,
In a factory you have laws for emergency shut down buttons yet in a public amusement park you dont see any 😅
Except you do. There are e-stop buttons and it's the riders fault they didn't report the issue to the ride operators.
I've worked there in maintenance. I can say with full confidence that every repair or maintenance task is done to 100% of the technicians efforts. No one cheeses out. And I have no loyalty to say this. I thought tge GF was a douche. I just see how serious everyone takes their jobs
Ppl too heavy now a days that's why

Why can't I get a lawsuit like this
Because you probably hate amusement parks because "they're dangerous" but also drive a car.

Ive been on this ride before i thought it was underwhelming and unsafe and what do ya know
The log ride is so old, the railing ain’t the only problem that thing has! Smh!
Cha Ching
The ride is over 50 years old, 😩
The whole flume is breaking apart!
If only the person recording knew to stay there for a few more minutes. Wasted opportunity
He has that jaw movement…..
I had log accident this morning
Isn’t this common for rides that have constant water flowing through its structure? Btw it appears the rail was the culprit not the ride
Makes riding it scarier now doesn't it😱
actually it malfunctiond becuae there was not enough water to slow it down it was low those rails at the bottom of hill should be underwater, a sensor should of stopped the ride due to low water when water is the only breaking mechanism on a log ride..
the side rail broke becuse the log ride was going to fast and hit it mutiple times, it's not the rail that is the problem but the low water level!
0:07
failing water pump, every time log went down it got lower and lower kas log pushes water out as it slows
The implication of this title is that we would see what happens right there before the accident. we didn’t therefore the title is lying.
What's worse is that this ride literally has no seat belts or any sort of protection meaning, if the ride DID tip over those girls would've literally flew out of their seats. when I went on this ride and saw that it had no protection at all and I went in the front. When I was going down I legit held on for dear life because I started falling out of my seat. it went fine but I could've gotten seriously injured. Hopefully six flags is able to fix the malfunction AND add some proper restrains onto it.
The airtime on a log flume drop is commonly mistaken to be dangerous, but it is perfectly safe. The only injuries that happen on those drops are when someone is standing up or leaning far to the side, IE breaking the rules.
0:11 I’ll be scared 😱 if, the ramp is off.
Ah yes, now the attorney is coaching them. Go get your settlement 😅
why is it always six flags??💀
Maybe ur daughters exceeded the weight limit
I was pushing out a dangerous log while watching this.
Is not a malfunction, it was cause by lack of maintenance.
It's just a guy that made a miscalculation, not a lack of maintenance.
The real story here is the fact Six Flags actually had a ride functioning enough to malfunction.
Holy shit, that's probably true, but not in the way you meant it.
That insurance money hit different. Why can't this happen to me.
Oh my gosh.. id be petrified
No wonder this ride failed. Having the water level just a tiny bit too high and every one of these that comes down is going to hit into and drag on that railing. That looks like it's meant to be a backup not take constant hits from these things.
The driver of the log boats needs to slow down at curves after going down the hill.
There isn't a driver.
The railing did not appear to be loose it WAS loose.
What a stupid way to die. Luckily no one got hurt.
A full inspection? Man I already see the problem and I didn't even go to engineering school
What's the problem then?
The reported crash that broke that area but he accident happened@@dogsinthedark
@@tryhardheavy Thanks captain obvious. But it's because the water level was too low.

Six Flags is ultimately a rip off with long lines, closed or malfunctioning rides and trashy people. Save your hard earned cash this summer.
Nicer parks are around. Busch Gardens in Virginia is worth the trip.
