Hello. Today we take a look at the second Stuart King of England, Charles I, a complicated man with a complicated story. There is a ton of stuff going on in this one, so hopefully I was able to touch on the more relevant points with regard to Charles's story. As always, if I catch any errors or any errors are brought to my attention, I will add them to the errors and corrections section at the bottom of the video description. I hope you are all doing well and thank you for your interest in the video and channel. Cheers!
Did the "Greyhound" pub lose it's license after the sad Duke of Buckingham incident? Housing whipscallions in a pub is not the done thing. Up the road in Southampton two centuries earlier Henry V had been targeted but thankfully it was foiled. Pubs - what's in a name? Quite a lot, you could do a vid on them. "Rose & Crown" etc. "Royal Oak" [Charles II], "White Hart" [Richard II], "Eagle & Child" [Stanley family], "Blue Boar" [Earl of Oxford]. "Greyhound" was often the name of a ship. One of Henry V's ships was named after it. Great video as always.☺👍 A slight dialectical thing, Ripon is pronounced "Rippen". A beautiful ancient city with it's Minster dating back to A.D. 672. Also "Hugenot" as you can guess is a French word. Being French it's "t" is silent. Pronounced "Hu-gen-o." Thank you once again for your dedication, work and "Bon Mots" 😉.
Please note to this day the monarch changes religion when they cross the border between England and Scotland as well as their standards, heralds and bodyguards.
This is the most comprehensive singular documentary I've ever seen on the reign & demise of Charles I. It is as engaging as it is informative. I'm really enjoying these Brief History lecture videos. Thank you.
Holy cow. I found you somewhere between Stephen and John and I can't believe we are already at Charles I. Thank you so much for these mini-documentaries (which are pretty darn good quality, btw). I know it's not easy and your work is greatly appreciated.
I have been watching all of your videos in chronological order, and it has been an absolute treat. Thank you so much for adding chapters to this one! I was just beginning to think within the last few that I've watched "I wish there was chapters". Fantastic content! Keep it coming!
I know I keep saying it but I always get really excited when you upload. I also love how you kind of give more showcase to the personalities behind the historical figures as well. It’s so easy to forget that these names were people with private lives as well as individuals who influenced world events and you do very well to remind your viewers of that by talking about their character and personalities. Wonderful job again! I was excited for this one and you did not disappoint.
I'm a huge history nerd, especially the history of the uk. You do an amazing job at presenting facts while being entertaining and not leaning into the conjecture that too many other historical content creators inevitably end up lening into. I've been binge watching since youtube recommended your Chanel. Keep up the great work my friend.
It's a travesty that your subscriber count isn't higher. Your videos are very high quality and look forward to watching them as soon as they're published.
In my view this is a very comprehensive yet compact narrative of an extremely complex period in English history. Many thanks to the author for great work.
Gotta say. I love that you say it’s a brief history and it’s still at least an hour long, so many channels condense very complex historical events/timelines into less than 20 minutes and it really makes no sense to me. Thanks for your dedication to historical education ❤❤❤
Hahaha I thought the same, that if it was a 20 minute-r I wouldn't have clicked on it. I'm sure whoever made the vid could have gone on for 6 hours and still have had more to say, so in that sense it probably is a brief history of Charles I. Anyway, I'm only half way through so I shouldn't be in the comments - NO SPOILERS please 😄 (jk I know we all live happily ever after)
I just love this mini series.. Please continue these kind of videos..I listen over and over and learn more about these video each time . Thank you for such interesting and entertaining videos .
Yes! Thank you for this! Always looking forward to your videos. I can't get enough of history so the longer the video the better for me, but it might be time to change the name of the channel ;)
Really appreciate your resistance to include advertisements in your videos. Any chance you would include the audio into podcast? Cheers from Australia.

Can you discuss the relationship between King Charles I and Sir Arthur Capell, who was one of the King's greatest supporters, and was eventually sent to the Tower by Cromwell's people. He tried to escape several times via the river Thames. He was later found in the Tower with his throat slit open.
Well done! Navigating that bewildering array of Religious differences in the reign of Charles 1. No wonder his father and Queen Elizabeth 1 preferred a non interference methods in their rule! Somebody was bound to be offended and Charles seems to have done that to a lot of these groups! In Charles defense it was very difficult to rule over such a diverse land. But he should have compromised before there was bloodshed. And for that matter so should have Parliament shown sum restraint.
I dont understand excactly why Charles the I was so hated? He was a protestant, he was eventually a " enemy " to Spain. He had eventually a harmonios familylife,. I guess his ideas of devine suverinity was slowly , slowly becoming " old fashioned" parlament had become an tradition that was independent of the monarch and Charles constant biggering with the parlament , and the tensions of the political matters in parlament , did not show Charles in the public eye at his best, and since the parlaments members of course was conjuring support for their diffrent parties diffrent wiews and that Charles ALWAYS was in collisioncourse with the representers of his subjects, cant been god for public relations. His wife brought commoition with her " advice" she doesnt either have any god understanding of the political landscape and that may not be strange because with so many religios movements completly changing everything , and putting old ideas one its head , it must have been extremly tumultious time especilly with the 30 years war in the extremities. Charles was so out of touch with the political mode and changes that was emerging . So all that must have togheter made him extremly unpopualar. Concurre and devide did not work out.
Absolutely. I tend to sympathize with Charles I. As well as genuinely like him. Well, like him as much as I do most Kings of Posterity. No matter what, regicide is never okay. Period. Especially by some hypocritical parliamentarians, one of whom, after committing regicide, tried everything in his delusional and hateful power to become King himself. 🙄 Sickening. Oliver Cromwell is the devil, imo. Hate the dude. 👹
Please note the 30 Years War was brought about by the Defenestration of two imperial officials. Horrid, one landed in a manure heap. The Hradschin is still there and the beautiful and historic city of Prague. Sadly defenestration became a Czech habit. ☹
It did not become a Czech habit, there were only 3 major defenestrations of Prague and 1618 was the last major one. The armies prepared for war after the third defenestration of Prague in 1618. The Thirty Years War started after Frederick, Elector Palatine, was elected because the Emperor and Bohemia/Elector Palatine fought the first battle of the war: Battle of White Mountain. Educate yourself
We can never know, but I wonder how different things would be if Henry hadn’t died young? I wonder what the problem with he and his father’s legs were? Polio, maybe? Or rickets? Congenital hip dysplasia? We’ll never know, but interesting.
Very good doc here. But just one small issue for the narrator. The noun designating a group of mounted soldiers does not have an “L” in it. Or are you thinking of the hill on which Jesus was crucified?
Constitutional. They do not have political influence, unlike what many Americans seem to strangely think. They own a lot of wealth because of their many estates. It’s Parliament that has power.
I love the details of this research, except the mispronunciation of what I assume should be "CAVALRY, which to me is repeatedly jarring. Perhaps a proof reading problem. From the dictionary ... On the battlefield, one should send in the cavalry, which is the word for an army component mounted on horseback. The similarly spelled word calvary however, refers to a depiction of the crucifixion, or, more recently, to an experience of usually intense mental suffering. 🤔
Let's make it correct, the Scots (James 6th of Scotland) took over England Wales Ireland and France in 1603 Charles 1st was first King of Scotland and England
He ruled in London and primarily spent his time in England. James I is called King of Scotland first, but his successors were not. It was the English Parliament that took precedence over the Scottish one and first fought against Charles I.
I found your channel just today watching the Edward V one, and why don't you just say Edward IV rather than Edward's father, for a while I thought you were talking about his grandfather
Her story is short. She only ‘ruled’ for 9 days and was mostly a puppet of Northumberland and her father, Henry Grey. There’s no reason to include her in her own video when she fits nicely in Queen Mary’s video.
Please slow down & add more modulation / expressiveness to your speech. It’s such an interesting topic but one loses the thread as there’s insufficient time to process what you’re saying.
We would be a republic if that happened because when all other countries had revolution abolishing monarchy we would too if that happened because in this universe in our timeline Britain already knew what it was like with no monarchy and they didn’t wanna go through that Again so if Charles wasn’t killed and replaced by Cromwell we wouldn’t know what it was like without monarchy and most likely abolish it
Thank you for your tribute to Her Late Majesty and your professional and exhaustive feature on Charles I 🙂 Please note we have just had the annivesary on the 14th. October of Duke William's intervention at Hastings. This brought in huge changes in Government, Parliament Both from the Norman language, and the judicial system for England and the Anglosphere, for instance the 12 person jury. It is also the anniversary I'm sure you will be aware on the 25th. October Saint Crispin's Day, as you approach Thanksgiving, that another English king Henry V was involved in. As Britain has an unwritten constitution the relationship between the crown and the legislative which has not always been easy has been flexible. Unlike continental Europe Britain never had a revolution, it has been evolution. People wanting to join the legislative, not to overthrow it. We've come close to it in the Peasants Revolt but never more. The scene you refer about King Charles entering the Commons to arrest the members "The birds have flown" is very much part of parliamentary procedure. As far as I know no monarch since Charles has entered the Commons. The speaker said "I have no eyes to see or tongue to speak save that by permission of the Commons". Upon the opening of the new parliament the monarch's representative "Black Rod" is sent to summon the Commons to attend their Majesty in the House of Lords has the door of the Commons slammed shut in their face. Black Rod then knocks three times on the door for it to be opened. Symbolic but crucial. Another item you may have missed is Number 10 Downing Street. The front door of the Prime Minister is framed by a black decorative arch. Upon this arch is gold crown. Enough said. Please note the Stanley family of American sporting history played a prominent part in the Civil War as they had done in an earlier one in the Wars of the Roses. It goes without saying they were Royalists. The Lost Cause has a resonance in the United States. The Cavaliers have a similar resonance in Britain. As you near Thanksgiving, Britain celebrates the deliverance from the Gunpowder plotters. Sad what happened to William Laud one of the Caroline Divines and Thomas Wentworth. Oxford Colleges in the main, with one or two exceptions, were Royalist. It is no surprise the Oxford Movement arose there in the 19th Century. Not so sure about Cambridge Colleges. Carolus Rex.
The Lost Cause is completely riduclous and based in racism, White supremacy and pro-slavery nonsense. The Cavaliers don't exist anymore, the Royalists won in the long run, but the people of Britain wanted the King back, the Americans have never wanted Confederates back. Don't compare the civil war on slavery to the English Civil War. Plus, the Peasants' Revolt never threatened the monarchy. Learn English History. You sound American. You clearly don't know English history, you can't speak English correctly, and you're using Old English in your name. Mate, you're American, you're not English.
Many of the Plantagenet kings were disasters. John, Henry III, Richard II etc. Richard III dying didn’t really harm anyone. That’s why rebellions against Henry were never about Richard, but false claimants pretending to be Edward’s sons.
Being "sent to Coventry",aka people refusing to speak to you, originated in the civil war, when cavalier prisoners were taken to Coventry and the parliamentary supporters refused to have anything to do with them.

Bosworth Field was a terrible catastrophe for England that echoes still till this day 👈😑
Many of the Plantagenet kings were disasters. John, Henry III, Richard II etc. Richard III dying didn’t really harm anyone. That’s why rebellions against Henry were never about Richard, but false claimants pretending to be Edward’s sons.
Kings & Queens of England since 1066.
The pronunciation of CAVALRY is not the same as Calvary, the place where Jesus died.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. 1605.
Regin of His Majesty King James the 1st.
Being "sent to Coventry",aka people refusing to speak to you, originated in the civil war, when cavalier prisoners were taken to Coventry and the parliamentary supporters refused to have anything to do with them.
I told him not to mess with me, but he wouldn't listen.
Hoping for a Christmas miracle here🤭 BF
The piano in the background is extremely annoying. Hard to focus on the excellent commentary with that constant clanking of keys.
