  • Kyle, Branden, and Aaron head out in 3 Rivian R1T electric pickup trucks to test the consumption of 3 wheel and tire packages on offer from Rivian. They compare the 20" all-terrain wheel against the 21" road wheel and the 22" sport wheel and tire combo. Watch the video to find out how it all played out!

    I'd like to see a 4th option: 20 inch wheels with road tires.
    The issue I have is the "wheels" aren't really on-road/off-road. It's the tires that are on-road/off-road. So why not put road friendly treads on the 20s?
    I'd venture to say it's mostly the rolling resistance of the all-terrain tread that causes the 20s to be less efficient rather than the size or aero of the wheel itself.

      @@davidwalker72 Is a good advice.. many people do not check anything they just want they car to look different.. the problem is all vehicles should have the sizes mentioned in the papers.. The one below wanted to put 19 inch size on Rivian.. Usually when a brand make a vehicle they need to homologate the vehicle to be eligible for public streets and the end results specs should be mentioned after intensive tests in vehicle papers (including user manual), of course different sizes will affect all the vehicle values mentioned in the vehicle papers (sound -noise level, braking distance, energy consumption all performance values acceleration time 0-60 etc..) but i'm in Europe in some cases in US market things are way different people are allow to modify they'r cars how they want some put way too big rims & tires on vehicles to look like Donkey-kong or way too low rims & tires for that category of vehicles resulting Low-riders, others put small in front & big in the back resulting dragsters, hot rods or whatever.. in Europe all vehicles on the road must pass an annual inspection (TUV in Germany or ADAC Test, MoT in UK) and if they fail they can not be allowed on roads if police catch u they can confiscate the car papers & number plates, they can add a hefty fine-taxation, they can void the vehicle inspection and insurance in which case the vehicle can be confiscated by police.. usually those that fail are mostly because of weird modifications or different rims/wheels -sizes than those that are mentioned in car papers from the factory.. what is more to talk about ? well if they really want so badly a different rim-size they should re-homologate the vehicle with those sizes before mount them and risk getting caught from police..

    Guys - thanks for doing this efficiency test. I’ve been going back and forth between the 20s and 22s - for looks mostly and was always curious about the real world efficiency comparisons. I’ve been spec’d for the 22s for many months now and after this test I think I’ll stay 22s. I live in PA and will be on the road 97% of the time. Well done on the test.

    Like many other posts here, the tire selection has been a big challenge for me. This helps me solidify my choice to the 22" sport, which i changed to today...I don't think it will be much of an issue in the occasional Seattle area snowstorms, and I really don't go off-roading much, which was my reason for the 20's. The 4% hit to performance is not an issue for me. Thanks for doing this comparison, Kyle and friends.

    I just bought the Rivian and I have the Pirille Scorpion Verde 21" All Season Tires. We live in Colorado and have a second home in the mountains. In your opinion how well will this tire do in the snow on an electric vehicle with the weight. I watched the video on the Rivian you did in the snow but was so confused on what setting was good for snow by the time he was done not sure what is the best setting when driving in snow. I am a native to Colorado and have driven in allot of snow but this is a new beast. Any suggestions would be great.

      @@craig8638 when you get used to $2/gal, $5 is complaint worthy. And its not so much the price, its the principle of why prices went up. Very avoidable.

      @@stang393 even on an EV where you don't have power and and gearing efficiencies to deal with we had only about a 10% difference here, sure, not plus size M/Ts or anything, but in terms of dollars and range in gas it's not even worth noting when it's a trade-off and a buyer choice. The price from 2 to 5 per gallon is a 150% increase and is substantial in dollars and affects you no matter what tire you are on.

      @stang393 Рік тому

      @@tazeat yes but we get back to the main advantage of gas, 5 min fillups. When you calculate in the price difference of a gas truck to ev, it would take many years for you to get a ROI from no gas, becuase of the premium the Ev trucks are pulling. Once you can get a lightning for $40k then we have a real competitor.

    You took great care to equalize variables except for putting the aero covers on the 21”. Many of us who have the 21” remove the covers and want to know the difference. Note that Michelin now offers a 21” Defender M&S.

    The AT tires are about 1" taller. I wonder how it would affect efficiency if they were replaced with a 275/60R20 that is a similar diameter to the other 2?
