Welcome to the intriguing artistry of Neil Young! He is a brilliant singer/songwriter with a huge and fascinating catalog. His lyrics are often complicated and deep, sometimes amusing, and he can excel playing both ear splitting hard rock and exquisite, acoustic songs. Notice how he wrote the lyrics. To me at least, they sound like a book set to music. In this case, Powderfinger may not answer every question, but definitely takes the listener on a journey they won't forget. Please seek more of his work for review.
This song could be about anyone in a war situation. All you know is you're being attacked, and your choice is to run or to fight back. This song is about a young man who decides to fight back, even though it's just him against the people in the white boat. It's intentional that this song leaves many questons unanswered - like who are the people in the white boat? Neil wants you to focus on how the young man is reacting, not on the big picture of what's happening and why.
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN He did write it for Skynyrd. The peace offering thing is not true, while Skynyrd didn't particularly like Southern Man they were still actual friends of Neil. Sweet Home Alabama lines are tongue in cheek.

Neil is Canadian. It's thought this song is about Canadian soldiers patrolling the Saskatchewan River, to suppress rebel settlements in the area.
Woww the more you know!!
Neil originally wrote this song for Lynyrd Skynyrd as a peace offering. But their plane crashed before they had a chance to record it.
Whoa😶thats crazy!! Rest In Peace the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who have passed away!!
