- The Washington Post says it has seen a Pentagon document criticizing Canada's military readiness among materials allegedly posted online by a Massachusetts Air National Guardsman arrested last week. The leaked documents say Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told NATO officials privately that Canada will never reach the military spending target agreed to by members of the alliance. Retired Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie says the Canadian Armed Forces is not pulling its weight when it comes to defence capability and military readiness.

i served in the military and in the past, we wouldnt complain too much about defense spending as we were in a more peaceful era. i actually felt we should spent 1.7% of gdp spending. but after the ukraine conflict intensified, i felt we would need to meet 2.0%. someone needs to ask JT why we will never meet 2.0%? we have a larger economy than russia. australia has a larger military, and they have smaller economy and less people than us. i hope canadians raise more questions about this to their politicians
Clearly asking Trudeau a simple question doesn't work. The reporter on the Hill did just that and he went off on a tangent about other nonsense and as usual never answered the question. That's what he does. I too served in the army, and the current state of our armed forces is shockingly bad.
Ever since the 1980s that I remember that the lack of leadership has been lacking… (PM).
You can always choose to pay more taxes.
@igiveup it's not a question of raising taxes. It's a question of where out tax dollars are going.
Use your head
@@Handlebrake2 ive said it before, id gladly pay more taxes to ensure our national security. also, getting back to my australia example, our income tax rates are higher than theirs. but they are able to spend more on defense than us?
How can we when Trudeau gives away all our money?
Our Liberal "leader" AGAIN answering a direct question with an indirect answer. Not only are NATO members alarmed with the state of our military, CANADIANS are alarmed with the lack of defense spending / budget. It shouldn't be the responsibility of other countries to carry us through tumultuous times. We need to hold our own with RELEVANT defense resources & technology. As a G7 country, we should be able to maintain "par" with our NATO allies. If it's a matter of funding, we should consider replacing our Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, with someone competent in managing a Trillion dollar budget. Canadians are being taxed heavily through hard times. The funds are there...
"Not only are NATO members alarmed with the state of our military" Well, they can just continued to be alarmed and go to hell. And to defend us from what? NATO makes Russia our enemy on our behalf, and we are supposed to pay NATO for the trouble they cause us? We would be safer staying out of this. Canada doesn't need to be a nuclear target.
🙏🏻 it’s because for some reason justin like other nato leaders thinks it’s the usa tax payers responsibility to pay for their security. I don’t mind paying taxes to help Allies but when they don’t even do all they can why should America have to pay 75-% of nato??
As soon as the question was asked, he looked down in shame. Pathetic and weak.
Exactly! How can he say he's helping protect Canadians when he cuts $1 billion from the defense budget of our already minuscule military? What an incompetent outrageous clown. Trudeau needs to go, and we need Poilievre.
His statement doesn’t mean he’s not going to bankrupt Canada trying ..... because he will
You don't need to have a major in psychology to see when someone is discomforted by a question and clearly lying.
I've been saying our leaders have failed the armed forces for decades.... and its true. Its not just Trudeau, the cons and NDP are the same. We need a government willing to invest in our armed forces not only for defense, but also the social good and the opportunity it provides to Canadians.
Defense of Canada? Our government is so corrupt, the greatest danger facing Canadians is the government. The more armed they are, the more trouble we are in. After 2-years of COVID lockdown abuse, everyone should clearly see that by now.
Actually, the previous government did spend more on the military. The libs have gutted the defense budget .
These would have been good questions in parliament instead of all that vacation nonsense.
the Prime Minister accepting expensive gifts is nonsense?
To be fair, accepting bribery worth hundreds of thousands while receiving millions under his personal Trudeau foundation isn't nonsense. It's just this story is bigger and more important.
I think the point being hammered is not about the vacation but trust like a police officer getting gifts from a towing company or a judges and politicians staying at a resort of island of a friend like epstien and wonder how only 1 person was charged . The greater the position of trust or power the greater reason for accountability no matter political parties. I miss when canada was boring

We will be getting kicked out of NATO, before or after we loose our healthcare system.
We are not the only lackey nation in nato!
Agreed. We need to increase defense spending to at least 5-10% of our gdp.
We might be concerned if America suddenly decides to Annex Canada at some point after this.
We could, if the Government stopped WASTING our taxes!!!
Gotta love Trudeau dodging the questions.
Imagine the length of the video if someone were to make one with all of his non-answers like “why are we debating bout x, when what’s important is the budget where we’re giving increase in funding for health/dental care”.
Why don't you try running a country?
We are giving up our sovereignty to our neighbours if we don’t pay for our own defence.
So sad.
They just gave the entire CAF a pay cut and called in a raise 2 weeks ago
It’s been that way for decades
As a Canadian I am so worried about Northern Canada being easily over taken by Russia, China or whomever. Build up defense!
I’m more afraid of PP
Agreed, all our military numbers should be AT LEAST 10x as high as they currently are. Instead of 11 drones, we should have 110. Instead of 60 fighter jets, we should have 600. Instead of having only 82 tanks which is ridiculously low, we should have atleast 1500.
Don't worry about Russiya , they don't need you, we are poor people in Canada...Russiya big and wealthy country...Interested Citizen...
It was laughable to suggest Canada lead a peace keeping force in Haiti. To take control of 11 million people living in slums who view outsiders as hostile invaders, Canada would need an initial landing force of 150,000 to secure the island and go house to house clearing the island of weapons. Afterwards probably 40,000 to keep peace on the island until the police force was reconstituted and elections held.
Canada doesn't have the people, the budget, or the ships to stand up and transport such a force. So that was never going to be a reality.
2% of GDP ought to be a floor. It is too late when you need the troops and don't have the troops nor the infrastructure to support and equip the troops. Canada is definitely a nation of freeloaders.
One day when the NW passage is sailable, America will call it international waters. And Canada won't be able to do a thing, because America has been patrolling and protecting it all along, not Canada.
Agreed. At one point Canada did have the capacity to have led a peace keeping coalition in Haiti, but that is obviously not feasible now. And the northwest passage should be our top priority with modern naval ships
Then start recruiting and acquire weaopns, it may take time to get enough people.
2% is nothing on that scale, especially if you want to keep your commitment to NATO. How many trips to Jamaica would that be?
He is an embarrassment to our country.
All in favour of transferring CBC's budget to defense say aye.
Double Aye....
..well that's 1 billion and we are left without news. Only 74 billion to go...
No, transfer that budget back to Canadian taxpayers pocket. We have the US to protect us.
why dont Pierre debate this issue of defence instead of nonsense of who pay for vacation...by the way, we are commeting on CBC post critical of the government spending on defense, how does that fit with the idea of CBC being a ' government' bias institution?
@@nuxkaminaIt's a good start. A few tens of billions of federal waste shouldn't be too hard to find and cut in addition.
Well said by the General...
Canada, time to start pulling your own weight. You can't rely on the USA. Even Americans are learning really fast that they can't rely on the USA... If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready..
Agreed. Many Canadians are naive and complacent having the world largest military at their doorstep, so they don't feel like Canada needs a military. The truth is, you should solely rely on another country to protect your country's sovereignty. Canada's complacent and naive mindset is a fatal flaw that will screw us over in a world war.
Damn, your Statement is Gospel.
Why are we even *IN* NATO, if Trudeau is saying that Canada will never meet its obligations?
It's one thing to say that we can't meet that goal for the foreseeable future, but still commit to working towards it as funding permits, but to take that concept right to the end game and say that it will never happen at all is very much saying that Canada essentially lied when it joined NATO and said it would agree to spend that amount.
What a disgrace.
Then we should be kicked out of NATO
Too many Canadians are deeply naive about defence and geopolitics.
And boy are we going to suffer the consequences of that.
Agreed, we are overly complacent having the US as our neighbor that we don't feel like we need a military. That is a fatal flaw that will screw us over if a world war happens.
It all goes back to the Avro air fiasco. Canada is too scared to show the US that we can be competitive in the defense industry. Canada's peacekeeping reputation is needed to maintain to avoid feuding with other nations but times have changed now . Afghanistan also caused trauma to the Canadian forces.
Pierre for PM ASAP.
Amen!!! 👍
Jean Chretien would be proud.
Embarrassing. Damn.
Not a surprise... the last time we were at 2% was in 1988 with Mulroney. 1993 with Chretien 1.82, by 2003 when he switched with Martin it was at 1.12. Harper it up to 1.39 in 2009 before letting it drop. When Trudeau took over in 2015 it was down to 1.15. As of 2021 Trudeau had increased it to 1.4. No government since the fall of the Soviet Union has bothered to even try and hit 2%. Mulroney technically hits it because his era occurred at that time.
One word...............
That is okay. We will figure it out.
Canadian Soldiers can not even eat in Poland.
America and our other NATO allies may forgive Canada's lackluster NATO contributions if we make a stronger commitment to NORAD, which I think is an easier sell to Canadians.
Agreed, we should actually withdraw from NATO and put all that funding into NORAD. Why should we be forced to support some country half way the world when they’re attacked?
Hypersonic nuclear missiles will make NORAD obsolete

Major NATO countries were also underfunding their obligations but most are responding to the crisis. Pivoting to meet these new challenges need funding and time. The big problem is whenever the government (whether run by conservatives of liberals) tries to buy weapons/jets for Canada, or increase defense spending - the Canadians population collectively looses its💩. People get angry cause they don't want money spent on weapons. Until now I don't think they've fully understood why weapons are necessary. Now all you have to do is look at what's happened to Ukraine and understand why readiness and weapons are necessary. So I hope our govt can increase defense spending so that NATO doesnt' kick us out. Or refuse to come to our aid should China/Russia decide to try us - something most us now realize is entirely possible.
We’ve at least FINALLY started replacing the pre-Second World War High Power pistols we’ve been using for nearly 80 years as our primary service pistol. Something that the Canadian Armed Forces had been screaming about for years and that Parliament kept kicking down the road.

But on the other hand, the adoption of 10 new Canadian states would ensure a Democratic Party dictatorship. The US would lose any vestige of political balance of power which would be a disaster.

As of recently, european NATO members expect Canada to contribute more spending, or they're going to diplomatically isolate us..
We should opt out and tell them to go screw themselves.
This supposed alliance actually expects Canada to contribute more militarily spending to its own defence, than we have in trade with them...
Same European members that have primarily traded and thus funded Russia for the past 5+ decades, literally choosing to trade with their own rivals, before their own allies..
They won't even properly sanction Russia, and have contributed far less on a per capita bases to help save Ukraine. While they fund their own rivals, we fund Ukraine, and yet we get scrutinized.
