US: Supreme Court Limits Obstruction Charges Against January 6 Rioters
The US Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, limited the power of prosecutors pursuing obstruction charges against January 6th rioters. The ruling overturned a lower court's decision that allowed a charge of corruptly obstructing an official proceeding against a former police officer. The justices directed that charges must include proof that defendants tried to tamper with documents. The ruling potentially benefits former President Donald Trump, who also faces obstruction charges. President Biden’s campaign said that the ruling doesn't alter Trump’s actions against democracy. US Attorney General Merrick Garland expressed disappointment over the ruling and said that it wouldn't affect most of the accused in the January 6 riot case.
