I knew that Joe Brown was a favorite of George's, but I have never heard a Beatles version of this song. Been one of my favorites since I first heard it in the 60's as a little kid. They do a great job on it!
Seeing Joe Brown and the Beatles mentioned in the same sentance reninds me of a story told by Frank Farley, drummer with the Pirates. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates had been booked for a Liverpool gig with the Beatles as support act. After the gig Frank and Mick Green, guitarist with the Pirates, were so impressed they suggested to Johnny Kidd that they get a few gigs 'down south' for the Beatles and 'make a few bob'. Johnny Kidd's reply ? " Nah, they will never be as big as Joe Brown"
I hope that in the near future we'll hear a properly restored version of this recording, and of the other BBC sessions. There's a wealth of early material by The Beatles (and other musicians) that will finally be free of distortion and tape hiss. I would love to hear A.I. restored versions of some of the earliest known recordings from the 19th and early 20th century.
I think it's notable that this was only their 2nd time on the radio but they split the singing duties and included George which goes to show how equal things were among the 3 friends. Once the songwriting team of Lennon and McCartney started taking shape, George seemed to take an ancillary position but in 1962 he was still on par with his buddies.
Brian Epstein pushed for equal singing time for the front line. George had his "spot" before that, and so did Pete (he sang "Peppermint Twist" while Paul took over on drums), but Brian thought that George getting equal time would reinforce the group image.
He wasn't pointing out that it was Best on the drums, he was asserting that it may have been the best drumming that was ever recorded by him as the Beatles' drummer prior to Ringo taking over.
@superman11978 the song was a big hit for Joe Brown who the Beatles were big fans of. Joe Brown played I'll See You In My Dreams on the ukulele at George's commemoration gig because George also played the ukulele. He used to take 2 whenever he went flying in case someone else wanted to join in. you can get that on UA-cam too.
The song was written by Pete Oakman & Tony Bev’... Tony passed away in Arizona....Pete (original Bruvver) spent many years as “Lonnie’s bass player. Pete is now part of “Swinging Bluejeans, a fabulous guy...
That's a rare find! As you may know, the BBC wiped most of the Beatles session tapes, and that left EMI/Apple scrambling to find good off-air recordings of some of the broadcasts for the Live at The BBC CD's. Many have been floating around as bootlegs for years. This is one I'd heard of but haven't heard until tonight! :) It's unfortunate so many lesser informed fans want to insist this and others are Hamburg recordings, and want to have a pissfest over it. Cheers for posting!
A great song ..written by Tony Oakman and ?Beveridge of Joe Brown and Bruvvers Oakman 1961-62 the Beatles were a supporting act at the time but always remained mates to this day
The Beatles recorded "A Picture Of You" broadcast live on 11th June 1962. It is one of only 2 (of the 88) BBC songs, which were not released by EMI/Apple on either of the "Live At The BBC" or "On Air Live At The BBC (Volume 2)" double albums. The other song was "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)" broadcast on 7th March 1962. The official reason given for their exclusion, was the poor sound quality of the recordings, hence were not included. Following subsequent remastering, both of these songs should now be released officially by Apple, as they are historically important, and (now) also good renditions.
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it on bootleg LP I bought along time ago. Wish it was better quality. Definately would have been on The Beatles At The Beeb release if it was.
George Harrison sang great on Picture of You. I think he sounded better in the early days singing cover songs. They needed his voice for the 7 hour all night gigs.
I didn't recognize it as George at all, until he said the word "there" like "thur" and I knew it was him. He's doing an impression of someone else here, apparently, because it's completely unlike him.
This was an original song written by peter oakman/tony oakman/and j. beveridge.. the beatles then were back up to Joe Brown and the Bruvvers[oakman]in several gigs Joe became a good friend of George and the other fab 4..all played around europe in those days..tony did his Nashos then rejoined Joe in 1962..from a mate
Ok now i understand why this hasn't been released. The sound quality is way worse than even "Keep You Hands Off My Baby" from Live at the BBC or "Beautiful Dreamer" and "I'm Talkin' Bout You" from On Air. A great shame.
+Liam Child Tienes razón en que el sonido es incluso peor que el de Keep your hands..., pero como documento histórico, creo que hubiera merecido un puesto en el Volumen I de las Antologías.
Basher Best and his Beaters with "Star of Tomorrow" Little Georgie Harrison , the bus driver's kid from Speke.......... And yes, probably Best 's finest work. With anybody.Ever. It is said that the (then)Threetles ponied up and gave Petey real royalties from Anthology Vol 1 and the accompanying film. Making P. Best RICH P. Best. It is not known if the bus driver's kid died with a clear conscience.

Happy Birthday, George! Thanks for your music, including the great covers.
The Beatles never cease to amaze and inspire us. God Bless them All!
It was originally written by Johnny Beveridge and released by Joe Brown and The Bruvvas
I really wish this could magically, somehow be remastered and released on a future BBC album.
I wish too. But up to now is awful.

@@markschultz3387 So noted!
I wonder if they split lead duties because of the grueling marathon sessions during their stays in Hamburg.
Love this performance. It's a pity BBC not have the original tapes.
might be mr bests best drumming
He wasn't pointing out that it was Best on the drums, he was asserting that it may have been the best drumming that was ever recorded by him as the Beatles' drummer prior to Ringo taking over.
Best did a lot of decent drumming on songs like Ain't She Sweet and Cry For a Shadow.
haven't hear this before, thanks for posting!
Dont die this time.

Nice post i never heard this version .Thanks for sharing.
Joe Brown had a big hit with this and at one time the Beatles were his support act.
i've had a beatles haircut for about 7 years now and i don't regret it for a second
I have had mine for 50 yers ha ha
Longer than the Beatles had it
BUT WHY WOULD YOU ?
Me Too. I've always loved it. A shame technology cannot improve the quality.

Brilliant!
This was recorded live 6/11/1962 on the BBC "Teenagers' Turn-Here We Go", aired 6/15/62 (drums: Pete Best. Their second radio show.)
Is George doing the vocals? He almost sounds like Buddy Holly.
Yeah, that's George, sad to see it was left of the BBC albums
Souvenirs ,souvenirs ...merci :)

covered by joe brown...not the greatest of songs
According to Lewisohn it was only recorded on 11th June 1962 and was broadcast nationally on 15th June.
I'm pretty sure that this session was recorded when Pete Best was still the Beatles drummer. Ringo joined August 62.
Bob Sullivan true I've read six biographies about them
I really like Petes druming from that time....makes the songs so fast and aggressive
Yes, Pete is playing drums.
nice song, they should have included it when they issued "live at the bbc"!!
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it on bootleg LP I bought along time ago.

this song should be recorded in studio for album this it song is so amazing
both george & joe brown shared a love of music mainly george formby, great cover!

to me sounds exactly like a young george
Simplesmente inigualavél.
Oh Babe that picture of you my dearest Dawn Rachel Rodriguez ❤
Love this song! With all due respect, you're showing Ringo in these pictures and Ringo is not playing on this song.
Who listen it in 2021 ...Hi guys))))))
The song was one of Brian Epstein's favorites, Brian asked Joe to try and get The Beatles on BBC radio..
This needs A.I restoration. So do the Star Club tapes.
you should try with ia. maybe it can be cleaned
You should leave things alone.
They oughta clean this up and release it.
greats

They are playing great.

porque no aparecio en los cds bbc o remasterisado para youtube. solo porque canta george.
It’s (the verse melody) a bit like something else John wrote? Is it ‘I’m a loser’?
It reminds me a lot of George’s song “You Know What To Do” which was released on Anthology 1.
Is this off the Beatles live at the Star Club Hamburg Show 1962 ?
no its manchester 15 june 1962 ua-cam.com/video/ETvcgLjlTMA/v-deo.html
george singing!!
This is always quoted as one of Brian Epstein favorite songs, I guess thats why they recorded it.

George Harrison 19 yrs old singing lead vocal here.
Don't be silly, it's definitely the earliest version of the Beatles with young George singing.

George Harrison best guitar player in the world
@210357tommy u trolling?
Kind of Hillbilly type of tune. The solo is pretty basic, but I like this performance.
Too bad, the recording technology in those days was .. You know what I mean.
