Tenor Kurt Baum (1908-1989) never even considered a career in music until a friend urged him to study music after hearing him sing at a party. In 1933, he dropped out of medical school and began attending the Music Academy of Berlin.
What a wonderful show !!! Marvelous stars of the Hollywood Golden Era: Polly Bergen, Kitty Carlisle, Jackie Cooper, and even the presidential pilot... Witty, talented, unassuming, charming people... I wish I had been in the audience back there !!! Auld Lang Syne !!! Thanks for sharing the show with us !!!
Perhaps someone has already mentioned this but the PLAYHOUSE 90 episode that Polly was away doing ("The Helen Morgan Story") won her an Emmy, no less. This was a big moment for her, particularly since she had bought the rights to the Morgan story herself and then made a deal with CBS to present it.
Very sad to learn that Col. William Draper (1920-1964), Ike's personal.pilot, committed suicide by hanging after his piloting career ended following a heart attack. He had been flying since age 19.
Celeste #2 in the 3rd game had very piercing eyes when Bud was reading the affidavit. She looks right at the camera with eyes like a hawk zeroing in on prey. Thanks for the video.
Trivia: Draper was the one who gave us the name of POTUS plane Air Force One. I wish Kurt Baum had done a song for us -- he is - was - truly extraordinary. Celeste Evans actually had a facebook page and just died this year at 86 years old and she was still doing the occasional sleight of hand - she was amazing and became a magician when she was taunted by boys telling her she couldn't be a magician because she was a girl
I can't believe that _nobody_ mentioned this yet, but I believe that _this_ was the first show where each affidavit does not end with "I swear that the above statement is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
Columbine II's pilot, Bill Draper, was Ike's personal pilot during the war, and was joined by Col. Wm. Thomas, and Maj. Vince Puglisi, flight engineer. It's quite unusual to see a lower ranked officer captaining any crew, let alone one of such importance...
To maintain such long periods under water, one would have to have a surgery to install a tube through the carburetor float ( prostate ) serpentine the Large intestinal tract for a 3rd lung under the stomach. Kind of an inverse operation of the Colostomy Bag in my opinion. A fish has one of these built in .
Johan Bengtsson We have a good idiom for it and I have searched for the English alternative, but in vain. Here in Danish: "Som man råber i skoven får man svar". :) (I do still not get the Translate Feature to show up on these pages. Do you?)
Johan Bengtsson The Translation Feature below the comments disappeared some time ago, but according to both Gary and TPC, it reappeared a few weeks ago, at least for them. Not me, though. I wonder if this is a Scandinavian G+ phenomenon. I asked Joe (lives in Jerusalem) if he saw it but didn't get any answer. (Joe has Internet trouble in his new apartment and that's why he hasn't been online for a while). Let's see if the Americans still get it. Some may read this thread. ;)
@@Walterwhiterocks My father, an electrical engineer, never wore one. His coworker and friend lost a finger when he closed the tailgate of a pickup and it was caught, and the driver unknowingly drove off with his finger. I've never worn one either, mostly because I knew that guy, and later worked with a man missing his ring finger because it was caught in a printing press.
At that time a lot of men did not wear rings, only the wives. My father (married 1948) did not wear a ring for many years. Maybe 10-15 years later he started. Don't know why.
One of the panelists mentions James Randy (amazing Randy) who passed away recently. His foundation offers a $1 million prize to anyone who can prove the supernatural or supernatural ability. No one has won the prize to date (no big surprise).
Love the show; don't like when the "true" contestants act like they don't know an answer even though they answer it truthfully in an attempt to throw off the panel. I've seen that in a few of the shows but particularly in the first part of this episode
Darn, I was going to say that I'm pretty sure Houdini was suckered punched in the stomach in Detroit backstage from a performance. It was a normal trick of his; however, he had to know ahead of time to strengthen and tighten up his abdominal muscles. It ruptured his appendix.
it was a role, a facade not who she really was. it was considered charming for women to act like cute unintelligent and charming in order to make men feel big smart and masculine.
I'm not sure what you mean, Sarah. I've been posting the episodes in order from the start, outside of maybe a couple of episodes I posted out of order due to a request. I have had to skip a lot of shows due to not having copies, but I'm posting in order. If you haven't discovered this yet, you can find chronological playlists displayed on the main channel page. That should help you keep track. Here's a link to the main channel page in case you don't know how to get to it: ua-cam.com/channels/ZkBUfTQ_tmKAlUV_sQqrTQ.htmlfeatured
Sarah Brandy Peters I don't know what to tell you. Sorry. All I can do is post the videos in order and add them in order to playlists. Beyond that, blame UA-cam!

As a child in the 1960’s, I thought Kitty Carlisle was old and outdated! Lol! She’s so stylish!
She's my favorite.
Very sad to learn that Col. William Draper (1920-1964), Ike's personal.pilot, committed suicide by hanging after his piloting career ended following a heart attack. He had been flying since age 19.
How sad. What a waste.

Harry Houdini ‘s real name was Erich Weiss.
Welcome back Polly! :)

My guess is number 2 on the intro because he's the tallest and longest line of eye sight in proximity of the airborne wind // shield
( windshield ).

Johan Bengtsson A real good one! ;)
SuperWinterborn Well, ask a silly question... (as Queen Elizabeth II said once) :)

Those three ladies were stunning What a great way to end the show
# 2 looks like Mariska Hargitay!!!!
My neighbor was Clinton's pilot on Air Force One. Rings are not worn by USAF pilots during flights.
But this is a TV show, not a "flight." I, too, wondered why the other two married men were not wearing their rings.

Why was the audience yelling at the end of the show? ?? A very boisterous and lively bunch...

And nobody ever will. It's all BS
The legs on #3 in the third game. My goodness! Wow! Those things needed an insurance policy!

sucker punched in Montreal, died in Detroit. He kept performing after the incident.
I had thought he suffered a heart attack during one of his escape acts.
Unfortunately, Colonel Draper hanged himself in 1964 after suffering a heart attack and being barred from flying again.
OMG!!!

I want to know how they got back to US after flying the flying fortresses to Europe
boy would be nice if congress swore to tell the truth
Why DON'T they get a years supply of Geritol !!!!????
Col Draper died by suicide using his service revolver. May God rest his soul.
Wow, Polly Begaen hasn't been on in a while
The trousers of 2 and 3 (especially 3) were not how an officer would wear them. Too baggy & creased.
also #2 tie was not straight , I doubt any military especially an officer would make a public appearance in such shape.
Number 2 had a great voice though. That guy should have worked in radio or TV.
Polly Bergen...airhead of that decade.
it was a role, a facade not who she really was. it was considered charming for women to act like cute unintelligent and charming in order to make men feel big smart and masculine.
Were they really paid in Geritol?
maremacd I think he means that they were paid _by_ Geritol. :)
Thank goodness!
maremacd I think they received a bottle along with the prize money, though. ;)
I also thought that that’s what the host said a couple of times
hmm i want to watch these i order, but it keeps randomly jumping between episodes :-(

no, I have been using the playlists, so they SHOULD be playing in chronological order, but they are playing randomly, for some reason
Sarah Brandy Peters You probably have the playlist set to play in shuffle mode, then.
To Tell the Truth (CBS)
nope. It's playing randomly, no matter what I try.
