Cervelo Aspero | A True Racer's Gravel Bike, But It's Not For Everyone

  • Cervélo is a brand with a proud racing background and the new Áspero draws inspiration from the Canadian company’s road race heritage, while offering the adaptability and tyre clearance that’s come to be expected from a gravel bike. The result? Straight off the mark, the Áspero is different from your average gravel machine.
    To recap on the key details from the A Series launch, the Áspero’s carbon fibre frame has a claimed weight of 1,100g (56cm, painted) and is compatible with 700c and 650b wheels, in turn offering clearance for 42mm and 49mm tyres respectively.
    The tube shapes are inspired by the R Series, while the fork has a ‘Trail-mixer’ dropout that alters the offset by 5mm fore and aft. That, according to Cervélo, allows you to keep the handling consistent whether running 700c wheels with relatively slim tyres, or 650b hoops with chunky tyres.

    Love the look of this bike, especially the Olive color way. The frame set is 2500 and the bottom spec is 2800, so seems like no-brainer to get the full kit for 300 more and choose your upgrade priorities.

    I really like the combo of a fantastic frameset with affordable kit and groupset. It would be a good bike for both road and gravel. I can live rack mounts, but no fender mounts is a bit disappointing.

    Thanks for this great review. I bought this bike based on this, and I am super happy with it! Just to clarify the tubeless setup: The rims are tubeless ready, but valves are not included in the box, and the tires are not tubeless ready and have to be swapped. Also the bartape is 2.5mm, and is not wraped from the factory.

      I really love the look of this bike and I want to buy it, but the “too stiff for techy singletrack” I keep hearing is putting me off. This bike would fly on most of my local trails, which are generally road/gravel in the forest, but it can get a bit technical at times with rocks and roots. Based on your experience, would this bike handle it?

    • @kennethrgeberg2217
      @kennethrgeberg2217 4 роки тому +1

      @@mrobertsch I use it most on tarmac and gravel, an some times on easy singletrack with litte roots and rocks. For this the bike is perfect, and I do not miss more compliance or any type of suspension in seatpost, fork or stem. I run WTB ByWay 700x44 (still 5mm+ clearance), and these big tires with low pressure defiantly helps when going high speed on bumpy gravel roads. If the bike does not feel too stiff for this, then I think gnarly singletrack where the speed is lower would be no problem. I have also put on some Cinelli AVS Gel Handlebar Padding on the drops, and this also help a lot on vibrations.
      I have had this bile for 5 months now and ridden it about 3.000km, and can still highly recommend it. It is a great starting point for later upgrades and you get the same frame as the top model.

    How is the ride on road? Looking for a winter bike to smooth out rough roads and potholes more on the endurance side of the house. I have an S3 and it is fast but seems fragile. You definitely feel every crack in the road. If this was more like a smoother version of the R3 with a bit more comfort and compliance I think i would be perfect.

    Really like the reviews of the more realistically priced models, seems like the level I always end up buying... I get the upgrades I want as I wear out the parts it came with, not stuff I didnt really need/want. Not following what makes this a "race bike" other than not having mounts for bags/fenders... is it frame weight stiffness? its almost identical geo to my gravel bike with mounts for bags and fenders.... geometry seems really similar to most every gravel bikes I see , the 3T Exploro and a couple others seem more race like with lower stack and steeper HTA. Gravel bikes cover a such a wide range of fits/styles but this seems pretty average (good do it all geo) Being 6'3" 95% are a little overly "racy" for me, my saddle towers above my hoods like time trail bike :o

      @@griffinclubb2961 Haha joke's on you I opened my notifications for the first time in years just now. Yeah, it should be fine. NX eagle is shit--sram's x12 system runs on really tight tolerances, so the low end stuff that gets knocked out of spec easier is really difficult to work with. I've not had an issue with the cervelo, and it's much more forgiving to adjust yourself as well.

Both felt like rocket ships (okay maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration) compared to the Salsa Journeyman I'm currently riding; but they both did feel much zippier, faster and more like proper road bikes, which is what I'm looking for. This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
