- The concert and interview seen in this HISTORIC episode of TFT-TV (Tales from the Tavern Television) were recorded March 8, 2006 in Buellton California. It includes song performances, stories from the stage and backstage interviews with late-great AMERICAN TREASURE JOHN STEWART, and touches on such topics as: his time with THE KINGSTON TRIO (1961-67), writing songs with JOHN PHILLIPS (of the Mamas & Papas,) his time on the campaign trail with ROBERT F. KENNEDY, his partnership with (wife and poet) BUFFY FORD, hilarious yarns about his good friend HENRY DILTZ (who was one of the videographers and interviewers on this program), experiences with the astronauts at NASA and with his friend LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM (of Fleetwood Mac,) his views about politics, philosophy and the music business, and stories about songwriting including his writing of DAYDREAM BELIEVER, which became a huge hit for THE MONKEES.
This program, and other TFT-TV archives were made possible through contributions from the nonprofit ARTIST ADVOCACY FOUNDATION. Donations to this program will go to Buffy Ford Stewart to be directed to artists in need, and to the Artist Advocacy Foundation, which helps many artists in many ways. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't play a John Stewart song. My favorite since I saw the Trio live in 1963.
My name is John Stewart, named after this gentleman as he was and still is my fathers fave!
Saw John live many times in the UK and Ireland. A lifetime of great entertainment.
Thank you for sharing this. He was such a special man.
thank you for watching it
When I was young and driving everywhere, John's songs were always playing in the car. John's song reminds me of those days
Oh how I would trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday at a John Stewart concert. If we could only hear him live performing one more time.
he was, and still is, a wonderful presence, an American legend
Yes, I keep hoping that Buffy has a treasure thove of videos...
Wow. I just found this and could not leave until I watched the entire video. John Stewart's voice has gotten a little bit deeper, but the feeling is still there. I just loved hearing the stories. When I heard that John died in 2008, I played all of my 20 or so CDs before I could listen to anything else. John was my favorite musician. Miss you John. Thanks for posting this.
thank you for watching
Such an experience! So good, so best!
Thank you for making this available for all to enjoy. We miss John and love his music. All our best to John's fabulous bride Buffy Ford Stewart!
From 1965 through 1967 I was in a folk group called The Plainsmen and we sang exclusively Kingston Trio songs. There were originally four of us (12 strings, 6 strings, 4 strings, banjo) and for awhile we added a set of twins who played the guitar and we all wore the signature striped button down shirts that the Trio wore. Coinciding with our graduation from high school in June, 1967 and the Kingston's Trio last performance on June 17, 1967 at the Hungry I The Plainsmen broke up and we went our separate ways. Years later in 1972 I am in Rota, Spain at a Marine captain's house for dinner and he put this record on and out from the speaker flowed the unmistakable voice of John Stewart. The album was "The Lonesome Picker Rides Again" and I had no idea John was out there making music. From that point on I bought every album, cassette, CD that John put out. His songs are the SOUNDTRACK of my life. I miss him but his music lives on - so glad I found this TFT posting - WONDERFUL! THANK YOU! Colonel D. H. Young USMC (Ret.)
Great Story Colonel, (aka The Plainsman)
I remember this night like yesterday. My good Friend Caron and her partner Denise saved me a seat after that morning returning from a cruise out of San Diego. Made it JUST in time to order a beer and aNOTHER of God knows how many shows with John. I miss him every day
love this! - TFTT
This is so precious. JS will always be on my list of songs to be nurtured by.
Watching this on a cold wet winters day in South Australia (down under) but it has warmed my heart to see John (as never got to USA to see him and complete that bucket list option). But have all his vinyl and cd's and listen to them regularly. Fantastic. Wish i could have been there.
The first song I heard by John was Missouri Birds, I cried because of the beauty of that simplicity. I'm 54 years old and from Denmark, Europe.
A Great Song. I too love it! Florida Sunshine
I couldn’t believe it when I heard “California Bloodlines” on a bus in Algeria in the 1980s. Years later I met John in Roscrea, Co Tipperary and told him, commenting that there probably weren’t many people in Algeria who’d heard of him. He replied “There are large parts of Milwaukee were people don’t know me either!” A great memory and a lovely man.
ha ha!
Wow. What stories. Songs that tell our history and reach the soul.
This is Skip Schwerdtfeger. I miss the Kingston Trio and John Stewart every day. They and he were and are irreplacable. It was good that John kept going on his own after June of 1967. Carol and I drove all the way from Illinois to the Hungry I to see them close out in San Francisco. We went by the Hungry I a couple of years ago when in town for a family wedding and were shocked to see it had become a strip club. Fitting that one of John's lines was about a "folk stripper".
Thanks for sharing this story - Skip and Carol - we all miss 'em.
Even though his voice is frail, he shines without thinking and gives his fans a true performance !!
True, indeed!
@@TalesfromtheTavern John Stewart is a poet and his songs will go down in history, in my opinion.
This is a terrific production. John Stewart was a wonderful songwriter, and though this concert was recorded late in his life after he had lost much of his voice, it demonstrates that he could sing with great heart. I wish that there was more available like this.
Dearly miss John. He was one of a kind - the best kind. Hope this performance becomes available on DVD.
thank you for watching. Yes, it will become available.
When will it be available on DVD
John is missed so much We were the johnny Ds fans
This was performed/filmed about one year prior to John's diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer's disease. A great musician, performer, and human.
Really looking forward to this. A true legend.
He was such a treasure. I still play his stuff...and he is greatly missed.
yes, missed by so many
"Gold" and "Bombs Away..." meant plenty to me. I play ith record still. Lovely work.
:-)
Saw him about 5 times in the seventies... always great
Oh, if I never go east of Denver again,
Denver again, Denver again.
Oh If I never go east of Denver again,
It'll be too soon.
Honey it'll be too soon.
Hidy hidy, hidy ho.
You can have your Chicago,
It blew me down and laid me low.
hidy hidy, hidy ho.
Oh, if I never go east of Denver again,
Denver again, Denver again.
Oh If I never go east of Denver again,
It'll be too soon,
Honey it'll be too soon.
"Let me stay in the land I love,
Fits me like a buckskin glove,
And the Western Skies, they shine above.
Let me stay in the land I love...
Oh, if I never go east of Denver again,
Denver again, Denver again.
Oh If I never go east of Denver again,
It'll be too soon,
Honey it'll be too soon.
i am so thankful that this got recorded as a gift to all of us.....especially because he was in great form and this was just before that dreaded diagnosis he got and his later shows saw the first signs and it made me cry afterward. I love him here and it is etched in my brain. Thank you so much for posting it.
I was so grateful when I found this recording. John Stewart has been my favorite singer-songwriter since he joined the Kingston Trio. I got to meet him at a supermarket in Lake Tahoe where the trio was headlining at one of the big casinos, the Sahara I think. My roommate and I were working as maids for the summer. The guys offered us free tickets, but we couldn't use them because we were only 17 and back then minors weren't allowed anywhere in the casinos because alcohol was being served. Fortunately, I got to see John perform live more times than all the other singers and bands I've seen combined. If he was appearing anywhere in Northern California I was there. I took my five-year-old son to see him in San Francisco, and we saw both the dinner show and the midnight show too. My son was so tiny, he stood on his chair all night so he could see John and the band. My son's in his 50's now, and he's still a big fan.
The thanks be to you, John. Can’t begin; can’t end. Thus is the legacy of John Stewart
Miss him so, met him 1967 when Kingston Trio was ending 1st time, but the girls were so line up to see him, soon I got autogralfs from Dean Reilly,George Yanok,Frank Werber,Nick Reynolds,Bob Shane, but no John...saw him years later at Crazy Horse?

Tales....is this concert available for purchase?
Just can't thank you enough for posting this. Superb!
Thank you!
At about 20:35, John starts talking and singing about Bobby Kennedy's 1968 campaign.
John this song and story are also included in our Festival of the Year, premiering Dec. 9, 2020 on this UA-cam channel
SAD HERE in TUCSON.....I saw John many times dating back to the 80s in Ohio and here in Arizona in the 2000s. John's music touched my heart like almost no one else. AND, he ALWAYS talked to us fans, told stories, joked. His stories now about people coming to see him sure were true. He and Dave Batti and occasionally a full band always gave us far MORE than our money's worth. I just celebrated my 70th birthday, have had a lot of losses over the years. Loving this concert, Tales. THANK YOU... AND, feeling, I believe some of the cumulative grief. John, I miss you.
Thank you for tuning in and connecting and completing the circuit
I miss him too!
Could someone post the songs contained on this video please thanks
Great to have found this on UA-cam!
The guitar sounds like it has plastic strings...
I am very much looking forward to this show from before my time at Tales. Thanks.
Thank you, brother Tom. yeah, you're gonna dig this one!
Thanks for sharing this. Just stumbled upon this and really appreciate your posting this. Brings back nice memories!
what a highlight it was! thank you for checking it out.
does he perform gold?
His sweet dreams will come w Nanci Stewart is lovely
Saw him in 1975 at Lakeside Amusement Park in Roanoke, Virginia. He was opening for Nitty Gritty Dirt Bank. Hell of a show!
Awesome you captured this Ron!
Thank you for your hard work, your great vision and your can-do attitude. Honored to be associated with you
Seems like a great and compassionate human being. We sure could use him today, wish I could have met him!
Thank you so much, I remember when I was in high school. He came to KDKB in Phoenix. In those days it was a daytime only am station. The afternoon DJ, John Compton got artists like John Stewart to come into their studio and play. I also saw him in college.
JFC thank you
Love the music, but also the interview stuff is great!
Fantastic!
I remember the performance at your club in Redwood City as one of the best I had seen in 30 years of seeing JS...
anybody know where to hear his track "were all strangers" heard it on radio recently....cheers
We were fortunate to see him several times in small venues - great artist and storyteller.
WHAT: VENUE, IS THIS ( “ TAVERN “ ) , DOES ANYONE KNOW ???!!! THANKS, APPRECIATE ‼️✌️☮️
a few early shows (such as this) were at Mattei's Tavern, Buellton, but they have been hosted at Santa Ynez' Maverick Saloon for well over 15 years. Now in 22nd year. Check them out if you are in the area. Great co-producers, brilliant performers and intimate setting.
Yay! Looking forward to this!
Yes Teresa, us too! Thanks for joining in
Thank you for this
who ever wrote the sub titles was either deaf or English was a foreign a language to him
???
Do you think John was telling his absolute truth here in the interview segments, or is that just how he felt - that day? When he mentions the Kingston Trio from the 1980s on out, he does so with fondness. However, that's not how he talked about it back during the late 1960s until about 1980. I remember sentiments like he thought he really wasn't the right guy for the "Dave" position in the group and that he thought has his being in the Trio was kind of a mistake. That's why certain sentiments in this interview, I feel, have to be taken with chunks of rock-salt.
We do believe he was speaking absolutely truthful, and so does his wife and partner, Buffy Ford Stewart, who said this was the most honest portrayal of John's true self. He was already in the throes of his disease at this time, and according to Buffy, because he felt safe and comfortable (thanks mostly to the involvement and presence of his good friend Henry Diltz, who served as videographer and was in on the interview) John's defenses went away, and he spoke the truth.
We are aware of his comments about sometimes feeling uncomfortable as Dave's replacement, but this was pure John.
@@TalesfromtheTavern No matter what...John Stewart was always always loveable.
@@markjamesmeli2520 we agree!
He gives no other impression , thank you for confirming.
