From Tape to App: My Live Setup

- I have spend years refining my experimental electronic music live setup, and I will probably do forever (check my first video on the topic here: • Performing Electronic ... ) . As I prepare for my biggest show yet, opening for Rival Consoles at the Barbican in London, it is a good time to take stock. From vintage tape and drum machines to apps, here is an overview on what I use to play live and the reasoning behind it.

So cool he's playing the Barbican! Awesome venue and cool bit of architecture. Saw Boredoms do 88 cymbalists there ages ago. The acoustics are insane in that place!
Oh that bass stab through reverb. I haven't thought about putting reverb like that on bass for ages

Yay, you're coming to Poland 😊 Your gig in Berlin in February is my favourite gig of the year so far and I've been hoping to see you again. Before I watched this video I didn't know that I'll be visiting Legnica in October, but apparently I am now 👌👍
Also, Porto. Hmmm 🤔 I told my (Polish) wife that we should perhaps visit Legnica in October and she understandably said "why exactly?". Then I said "he's also playing in Porto in June" knowing that she loves Portugal after living/studying there... and apparently she's now actually thinking about a trip to Porto in early June (at the same time as the gig!) 😮😊
That would be lovely! It is the opening of a studio where a lot of my test equipment has gone, and guys from Mouse on Mars are also playing
@@Hainbach It would lovely, it sounds like a cool event. And it actually seems to be happening, we've found flights and a place to stay 👍 We haven't booked yet, I think I should contact the venue first to make absolutely sure I can get tickets, it would be a shame to go all the way from Warsaw to Porto and miss the show, obviously.

I've been listening to Voice Magnetic so much these days that I listen to it digitally instead of the tape because I'm afraid I'm gonna wear it out 😅 Would love to hear what you do with it live, but well, at risk, still no flying for me. Travelling with that gear before a show must be nerve-racking! I'm already half paranoid when I have to fly with all my cameras in my handluggage, I can't imagine checking gear like that 😱

Great show on Saturday, thanks so much, both yourself and Rival Consoles. I’m 63 y/o and old enough to remember seeing Kraftwerk on the Computer World tour which blew my young mind. It’s great to know I can still have my mind blown by new things to this day. 😉

Interesting setup. I'm curious how your 'luggage' looks like and how you manage to cross the borders with all that equipment. Or is it all sent separately, in flight-cases? Is there a special trick to pack the tape-loops without damaging them?

I like this "WD41" name. Says it all! After all, it took chemist engineer Norm Larsen 40 tries to obtain is most famous "Water Displacement" lubricating-derusting compound. Just hoping you won't need any WD40 for your Barbican Hall gig next Saturday. Too bad my poor health won't allow me to see and hear you there but I'll be with you at a (short) distance, from Putney (of EMS's Zinovieff's fame, we both know it). When I listen to your soundscapes I often think of (very) early Tangerine Dream with a touch of Faust. Soothing yet haunting.
Thanks for that. The old drum machine seems to bring a bit of inspiration, even if, in theory, you could replace it.

Can you tell me why most people is using the term electronic music to promote what really is EDM? They Don't even know what is a synth or a modulation. They just play loops and they promote as electronic music.
Don’t get hung about genres. They are just labels to sell things. If you let them define the music you make or listen to, it all becomes a product rather than a piece of art.
