When I was about 5 (in 1964) my family took me to the SanDiego zoo. In those days the zoo would let the little kids ride the biggest tortoises, and I did. I kept listening for her to say when those torts came to the zoo because maybe they were there when I was there! I’ve loved tortoises ever since. 👍 Thanks for sharing.
My mom did that too. She said her brothers were rude to the tortoises, thinking they were the Lone Ranger and the tortoises would refuse to move. She asked nicely and they would move.
I have recently become a huge turtle fan, after discovering the remains of Literally thousands of turtles, killed and fossilized, in the Comet Impact referred to as the Younger Dryas Event. I have several flat footed tortoise feet like those of the Galapagos Tortoises. I have found thousands of these turtle feet, and many pieces of Carapace, in Xenia Ohio, where a large fragment of the comet impacted. These turtles, while like the Galapagos, are likely all extinct like so many other Ice Age fauna and Flora from this Massive 62 mile wide comet impact, which is likely the cause of the extinction of most of the animals 100 pounds and larger near the end of the Ice Age. Hardly a day goes by that I don't find Turtle feet around here.
Meet Tee-Tee, our female Hermann Tortoise. As a baby taking her out of the box, she made an ocean of Tee-Tee. She is now 3 years old and about 5"" long. Her maximum size is 7".
I was showing my dad pictures of when we got to meet the giant tortoise at our zoo. “You should be careful! Tortoises eat children!” “Dad tortoises are herbivores.” “Look it up!” I think Dad has finally lost it.
i still cant get my head around the lifespan of these tortoises! i think all tortoises species can reach 100 minimum so they can outlive humans by far! just ashame humans cant live that long to live alongside these wonderful creatures longer
my dogs do the same thing when you're scratching their necks! maybe i need to buy them some finches so they'll leave me alone and i can watch more youtube videos!

I lost my 36 year old Box Turtle 2 months ago, so this makes me smile.

Oh I think there was a video from zookeepers that they do give meat to tortoises but not all the time.
I can't wait until my new born Sacata Tortoise gets to be about half the size of a galapagod tortoise
