Kick ass band for sure...this is a bonfire band for real. Sitting around at a lake and jamming to Rush keeping warm around a bonfire watching the sun rise.
@@RidiculousRic Just a joke about Neil's mustache The Period from Caress of Steel thru Hemispheres he had this massive mustache. Mostly during their prophet robe period
Yes, that was Neil on the drums! Closer To The Heart was on their 5th album A Farewell To Kings; the title track's lyrics are even more relevant in our current political climate, as they describe a yearning for the type of world described here, and it has a video that's similar to this one, so be sure to see it. Have a great evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
I remember hearing something Neil said about a picture or painting in someone's kitchen. It was an art piece that said close to the heart. It meant that people should put love into their work or endeavors. It makes sense to me. We all should have a passion for what we do.
Nice to see you in the comments again Fred! I can definitely tell this was big for the radio, but those songs are needed to bring in the listeners to hear the rest of the band’s discography:)
The original drummer John Rutsey, only ever recorded the very first studio album with Rush, the self-titled debut album. I think John toured with Rush for a little bit in Canada for their debut album tour, but I could be wrong about that. As I recall them talking about it all in one of their documentaries, about the fact that they had just a few short weeks to find a new drummer and get him up to speed in time for the tour. Maybe someone else here can enlighten us as to whether they took a break from a main tour, or maybe they just had a few gigs they did before the real tour. But for their first ever tour opening for a head-lining act, they where chosen by KISS to be the opening act while KISS toured Canada, Gene Simmons saying they sounded like a Canadian Led Zeppelin, and loved them. But they got along so well with KISS and were such a great opening act, that KISS kept them for the U.S. tour as well, IIRC. In any case, it was Neil Peart that was the drummer for Rush on tour with KISS and he had exactly two weeks to learn all the songs and Rutsey's drum compositions before they hit the road. John Rutsey did play the drums on a few released singles recorded before they made their first album. And there are a few videos of Rush live performances, from their club days that do feature John Rutsey on drums.
Thanks Ric - it's hard to believe you don't have more subscribers. Rush is one of my favorites. Saw them in late '80's, early '90's and 2004. Just a great show and three cool guys. You'll love getting to know them. They have a lot of video interviews and Neil wrote several books. I read a couple, one was his journey, both literal and figurative, after his daughter and wife died 6 months apart. He drove his motorcycle by himself from Toronto, to Alaska, western US, Mexico - 6 months, I think. Ghost Rider is the title. The band was off for 2-3 years.
First off thank you for the kind words, your support means the world to me so hopefully more people can enjoy the videos as you do:) secondly thank you for the input and the information, I need to check that out! Wow!
I remember when Alex & Neil cut their hair. We (my little group) were worried it was like their Samson cutting his hair. lol. It was before the Moving Pictures album, so it definitely was not like Samson. They were my 1st concert 1981, I was 14. My friend's brother stood in line all night to get tickets & he got us 2nd row right in front of Alex. It cost $10. One of my favorite memories.
This is one of the few Rush songs I actually knew (along with 'Tom Sawyer') before I took the deep dive and become a fan less than one year ago. I've always liked it for what it is, although I think they had much more interesting songs over the course of their career. For a future reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Natural Science' from the Molson Ampitheatre in 1997. I also suggest reading the lyrics ahead of time for it, as they are very deep. It's one of my favorite live performances of their career and one of my favorite Rush songs in general. There are a lot of moving parts (of course) but I'm always amazed at how they master all of that musical complexity live. They also do it at a really driving tempo (thanks to Neil) which makes it even more exhilarating to watch.
It’s always a pleasant sight to see you in the comments! Thanks for the continued support, engagement and information! I will definitely be talking Natural Science soon! You have been consistent in the comments and I’m sure the Rush army would love to see it too! Thank you again!
Hey Ric, I know you're getting a lot of recommendations for Rush, but let me add one that is always overlooked. "Anthem" It's the 1st song on their 2nd album, so it's the first album with Neil Peart. It's a rockin' song, but you see the progressive elements that they started. They made a promotional video for it, so you can see them perform it.

Actually, Neil wrote the lyrics to this song together with Pete? Talbot. Geddy and Alex, as usual, wrote the music. Also, Tom Sawyer lyrics were written by Neil and Pye Dubois. Pye has lots of notes and Neil kinda put a bunch of them together for Tom Sawyer. Pye was the lyricist for another great Canadian band of weirdness called Max Webster.
@kentgreer1079 from my understanding they were approached with Closer To The Heart and maybe made some changes together with the lyrics but the concept was already there...and yes I said written nothing about music!
This is a great song, and I have been listening to it since 1980. But, the best version, and a great one to review is the liv3 version from the different stages tour. Fantastic bass solo in it that crescendos beautifully with the guitar and drums, just jammin to the end.
