  • Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world-and it's rapidly changing. Chinese travellers have overtaken Americans as the biggest spenders and nearly all regions are welcoming more tourists. Except one.

    Isn't it simply because the Chinese have 3x as many people. Some gotta want to travel.

    • @harrywood6502
      @harrywood6502 6 років тому +12

      Well no it's not simply because they have a larger population, becuase they have always had a larger population. In 1960 they had 3.6x the US' population but wouldn't have been anywhere near the biggest travelers as 90% were peasants and at the time they were having humanity's deadliest famine(30m, maybe 45m, dead in 3yrs from starvation(that like if everyone in Belgium, the Netherlands and Scotland starved)). But now 30% of China is 'middle class'(and no one's a peasant) which is 414m people, 100m more than the US population, 100m less than the EU population(and those are total population, not just middle class people.)

      Mr EHEHE, parts of china are not toxic. What you're talking is big cities like shanghai, beijing, guangzhou, hong kong. www.topchinatravel.com/pic/china-tour-pic/jiuzhaigou/jiuzhaigou-12.jpg

      Yes, it is that China has so many people, as the video explained. Only 7% of Chinese own passports

      That’s because Europe is close to tourists, whereas the US is very far. The further destination, higher ticket price.

    As a person who has a bachelor in tourism management, the idea of the strong currency being less appealing to tourists have always been a debate. For example, Canada currently have wayyyy weaker currency than compare to US; yet, when people (American tourists) were surveyed whether they would want to visit Canada in their life time, they would always put visit Canada in their bucket list rather than actually taking the advantage of their weak currency (so, in our lecture, we concluded it was more of values that drive people to travel. Weaker currency of a destination is a plus, but not a significant decision factor.) .
    Destination Canada data reveals while US market is still the major market driver of the Canadian tourism industry, the number of visitation did not drastically change compare to other countries visitation like China, India and UK.

      Good points but If you have a family of five and an average income, that trip to Disney Land may now be too expensive. Our personal economics dictate spending patterns.

    • @johnalexander651
      @johnalexander651 6 років тому

      Also remember that the cost of living (i.e buying food, going to restaurants, staying at hotels) are also more expensive in Canada than in other parts of America. The weak dollar isn't weak enough to give a financial benefit for Canadians.

    ~50% of Americans can't even afford to take vacation days. Many use their vacation days (if they get any) for sick leave when they get ill.
    Out of the ~50% that take vacation days, 40% can't afford vacation outside U.S.A, excluding Canada or Mexico.
    Then it's only about 10% Americans that can afford to go to EU, Asia, South America, etc...
    There are millions of Americans that haven't even seen the oceans or have traveled out of their states, one of the downside of working two/three minimum wage jobs.
    Then the rich gets another tax break.

    Tuvalu IS NOT the least visited country in the world. I just got back from Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic. The Central African Republic got less than 250 tourists last year and Equatorial Guinea got less than 150. South Sudan and Yemen probably got even fewer than those two.

    !!! SO DISSAPPOINTED!!!
    The content of the speak is so useful.
    However, why the official channel like @THE ECONOMIST had a really serious mistake about the national flag of VIETNAM AND CHINA. VIETNAM & CHINA are different and the national flag is one of the country's signature too. Although we have some similarities details on the flag, it's so disappointed when see the vietnamese flag picture and then hear that mentioned the chinese one.
    I hope that the admin can see my comments and make adjustments. Just imagine we present the UK's flag and mention it's the australian one. Could you feel easy about this?

      Every nation which receives many tourists is overrated. Why? Because in response to their tourism surplus, a bunch of cottage, tourist specific industries emerge and strip the ability to have a genuine, immersive experience as an outsider. You get funneled through their tourism industry in France, US, Australia, Japan, UK, Spain, Italy, Germany etc,etc and it fucking blows for the most part. You have to go obscure to have real moments...Albania, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Bolivia etc.

    The Economist showing its true colours again; first promoting an Islamic state with the last advertisement for Saudi Arabia followed by this drivel.
    The Economist pretends to make a statement about tourism but of course ends it with a dig at the USA stating that the 4% decline is due to the travel ban, more visa checks and a stronger US dollar. Obama's travel ban, instigated by Trump is focused on a small group of relatively poor, Islamic countries known for extremism; these countries account for a tiny fraction of tourism dollars yet the Economist put this at the top of the list. Pathetic.
    To enter the USA, people from many countries require a visa; this has always been the case and checking the visas is a routine role of border/immigration security so to suggest that there are "more" visa checks is a very disingenuous action by the Economist.
    Surprise, surprise, the USA economy is doing well and the dollar is stronger. This is probably the only real reason that the USA tourism activity is down 4%; a trip to Disneyland costs more this year than last.
    The Economist has truly lost its focus. So sad.

      keep living in your 'Murrica world pal. Much of the world hates Donald Trump and perceives the US to be an unfriendly nation full of crazies. THATs why tourism is dropping. You think if you have an arrogant, bombastic ignoramus as a leader, who is openly hostile to others, that even if their own countries aren't banned from going to the US, people will not be put off? There are so many other/better places to visit.

    • @Rick-uu5yo

      Then why didn't the Economist simply state your version of the facts? Also don't jump to conclusions; I was addressing what I consider to be a deliberate and disingenuous move by the Economist. You assume any one that comments on this is by default a fan of everything USA. Not the case.

    • @Rick-uu5yo

      A good question but for most people, trade and tourism are not the same. Trumps trade issues are business/industry related based on comparing trade of goods and services between countries. The tourist trade is a different issue; I'm sure that no country has any issue with masses of Chinese tourists spending lots of cash. It would be my bet that the majority of the Chinese people could not care less about trade wars. I guess we will have to wait and see.
      The Saudis are very different; the recent spat with Canada is escalating into a very serious trade and business war. Cancellation of contracts, withdrawal of funding for projects, recalling students studying in Canadian Universities. A directive from a conservative and harsh government will have immediate impact on all business relations. Canada really screwed-up very badly.

      Some things have to be set clear. There is at least one beautiful place to visit per state in the US, and this is coming from a Mexican. And second, there is not a single beach in the US that can compare to the average Mexican beach. And the cultural gap is huge.The US has basically no traditions, food, and very little history. The landscape in both countries is equally impressive. I don’t really see the inferiority of Mexico as a tourist destination. Don’t compare these two countries. Both are great in their own way.

    The cryptocurrency has charted a 10-fold rally in the past 11 months, offering a significantly higher return than gold amid the massive inflation-boosting monetary and fiscal stimulus delivered by authorities worldwide to counter the coronavirus-induced economic slowdown. The precious metal reached a record high of $56.000 in February 2021 and has been trending higher ever since. I invested 6BTC and I have been earning 2BTC weekly.

    France is NOT the most "visited" country. That's just manipulation of statistics. More than 60% of the visitors to France are just passing by: from northern Europe to southern Europe, from eastern Europe to western Europe, vice versa... A country with the ugliest 'landmark': unfinished scaffolding called 'Eiffel'.
