  • In this video I talk about gear alignment in VCRs, and some of the marks the manufacturers put on gears to help us get things back together. For those who haven't seen my first video on this subject click here. • VCR Eats Tapes. The Mo...

Thanks, good idea to use a couple different colored markers or symbols (witness marks )to keep all the sections aligned in case the factory markers are not visible. JwgK

awesome video, very helpful. I have 3 VHS-C cameras that need my attention. 1 chews tapes when in RW the other chews when FF or in play mode as I can see the tape slips. Not sure if its the pinch roller, i couldn't find an encoder switcher on the camera.

If you meant the mode switch they can be buried in somewhere in there.

@@GrantsPassTVRepair yes i did mean mode switch. On those little VHS-C cameras everything is packed tightly.

@@reel_images Yep. Unless you repair that model on a regular basis and know the mechanisms it can be a real challenge.

i wonder if its best to have a starting point with alignment of the gears, eg: the top gears 1st? (on the head side) or is there a primary "main" gear that should be timed to start with, and all the others are synced to that specific gear? such as the "pinch cam gear" or the "main cam gear" which is the main gear, that once its in place, all the others will align to it? or am i answering my own question? the "main cam gear" ? thats why its called the Main cam gear? and everything is aligned to it?

For me the starting point is in the eject position with the tape out of the VCR.

You forgot to tell us what was wrong with the tape counter not working. Was it dirt on the sensors, defective sensors...? Great video by the way.

In this case I didn't bother to repair the tape counter,, but if you ever need test one you just put your meter probes across the Two infrared detector terminals, and rotate the disc which has the reflected strip.. When it sees the Infrared emitter light bouncing off the rotating disc or shining through it in this case it produces a voltage drop .across the detector terminals.

Hi I've got a Toshiba VHS/dvd combo to fix for my Dad tapes not loading and playing. Can you align it without having to strip it down? Thanks Jack UK

The only thing you can align without taking it all apart is the loading carriage.

I twiddled the spindles and gears before it basically went from not liking the tape to ejecting it to loading it play a few seconds then standby!
