  • THIS MUST BE THE DESERT...
28 hours to go. And I'm relearning songs like a mad song-relearning machine.
    www.indiegogo....
The best way to explain 'This Must Be The Desert' is to try and capture the opening spiel I delivered every night on the Toothpick Bridge tour.
'It's time for a love song, I think. But a proper one. Because, you see, most love songs are written during the first three months, when you're still banging on to your mates about the person you've met and how wonderful they are and everything is sex and kittens and fireworks (but never all three at once, you deviants). This, on the other hand, is a song for later, when you're a single pointless argument away from screaming 'take your futon and get out!' in increasingly strident tones until the people with the special wraparound jackets show up to ask you if you'd like a vacation.'
Now, obviously I know SPECIFICALLY who this was written about and, as you might imagine, there was an element of 'the Kenton doth protest too much' in the mix.
Still, if you're going to write a bitchy 'I ain't even bothered' song, then country soul is the way to go. The Swinging Laurels joined us for a lot of the Toothpick album, and some excellent gigs on the tour, including the single muddiest field I've ever experienced, and they did excellent service on this one in particular.
I had to make do without them tonight.
