The interviewer seems to be some sort of mathematical physicist, so it would be a tall order for him to have skills in interviewing older people as well. Radio and TV have a horror of silences, and seek to fill them. BBC Radio 3 allows the longest, because they don't play jingles between concerts, and this is most like a Radio 3 interview.
