- 1966 was a complicated year in the beatles' career, John Lennon's comments about Jesuschrist affected the band's image considerably, incidental situations in their tours became more and more frequent, from the mistreatment in the Philippines to the protests in japan to stop them
performing at the Budokan, the press conferences were more and more tense, the band's relationship was wearing out, and they gave the impression of being distant, John, George and Ringo were already married men and McCartney was moving away from family life to get involved in movements that were in London in those years, as the months went by the composition evenings between Lennon and McCartney were less frequent, they all started to work on their own, to have alternate projects, live, things were not looking good, they received threats in every city, and they would experience their last american tour a few months later, hand in hand with their interest in studio
work, experimentation and artistic evolution as their escape route, and already with the basis of an album as an artistic piece in rubber soul, Revolver represented a radical change in the rules of the game.

I must be very dumb because "And your bird can sing" seems like a master piece to me.
One of my fave tracks since 1966. Played it many times with my Beatle cover band.

The second most groundbreaking album is Revolver and the third is also Revolver.

C'mon, opening w/George's killer "Taxman" & later Love You To & I Want 2Tell You', Paul's "Eleanor Rigby", plus , Got To Get You Into My Life, John's great 'She Said, She Said and the rich shades of psychic*bloom weaving "Tomorrow Never Knows"; I'll grant "Sgt Pepper..'' is a great concept & album but Revolver exists in a dimension of sound that's just higher & tastier 2the ear.
And Your Bird Can Sing is a fantastic song. It was very impressive using a double guitar part in harmony. This was something Thin Lizzy and others would emulate and popularise. The Beatles were the first. So there.

The influence the Beatles had on every aspect of popular music and culture was immense. They were a phenomenon that I doubt will ever be duplicated. And every succeeding generation will rediscover their genius until humans no longer exist.

I listened to Revolver yesterday. The album never grow old. Its always fresh.
I've heard people say Rubber Soul and Revolver could be a double album. I can see that if referring to a turning point in their career, but the two albums are completely different sounding. Rubber Soul more acoustic and folk sounding, and Revolver very electric and bright. Rubber Soul sounds more like a double album with Help! to me. Those two have lots of similarities, only Rubber Soul more complex.
Revolver moved the Beatles into their experimental period (drugs and studio) that concluded throughout 1967, and fits better with Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour.
"I've just seen a face" was on the U.K Help Album but it sounds like it belongs on Rubber Soul.

The Uk Rubber Soul and the American Rubber Soul are very different beasts

One of the greatest albums they ever did , it really had everything you would want.
The Greatest Album of all time. So many different types of songs and yet it is cohesive.
Tomorrow Never Knows was likely the most advanced song of theirs, but was the first song they recorded for Revolver!
and to think they were still touring with a set list that included Baby's in Black, Rock & Roll Music and Twist and Shout. They were living double lives - like Betty Boop being ditzy on screen and reading Shakespeare for fun or DaVinci doing caricatures at the fair and painting the Mona Lisa on his spare time.

These guys met in the exact time and place, and bonded together in a band that called "The Beatles" whose aura is still the talk of the planet, and perhaps for generations to come.
Shocked to hear him slagging off And Your Bird Can Sing; always been a fav of mine - it's got a great edgy vibe, and awesome guitar lines. And high harmonies!
I think it's a favourite of most people, but John didn't like it... :/
This is the first album that went all the way to experimental and musical maturity, we get the final form.

tomorrow never knows some 55 years after its introduction to the world remains the hallmark of studio ingenuity and innovation for listeners and artists alike.
I remember looking forward to the next Beatles album and single. When Rubber Soul cane out, my mind was blown away. I was hearing things that I had never heard before. Music like no other artists of the time. They continued to evolve and so did my young mind. They never dissapointed. Thank you John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and thank you for posting this cool little retrospective video.
Revolver is the Greatest Pop/Rock Album of All Time, IMO. It's most definitely the Greatest Beatles' Album, IMO. The music styles range from Rock to Raga. From Psychedelic to Soul. From Classical to Whimsical. From Traditional to Experimental. It's been My Absolute Favorite Album forever. The last album that they truly recorded as a band. The Beatles were firing on all cylinders while recording Revolver, as well as the 45 of Paperback Writer/Rain.

I would have to disagree. I think in recent years this has become the the edgy, artistic choice as best Beatles album because of the psychedelic elements and its iconic and creative cover compared to say a Rubber Soul. But I think the album is weaker in terms of content, certainly for a casual listener compared to the latter, which I regard as their best. Side two is super weak. For No One is good I guess but is certainly modest and then there's the closing track which I know is divisive. I personally don't like it. It just comes across as edgy in an attempt to be cool and hip. Side one is strong though, apart from the two Harrison contributions. I can see why people like it but its not my Beatles sound and I think most causal fans would agree.

Don't get me wrong, Rubber Soul is an Incredible Album. My 2nd Favorite Beatles album or 1- B, if you like. But it still hardens back, to a certain extent, to the Mop Top or Mania period that I believe they were trying to shed. The Beatles weren't TRYING to be Edgy and Hip while recording Revolver; they were Edgy and Hip. They SET the Edge. They already knew what was Hip.They weren't recording just Boy/Girl love songs anymore. They were writing about Political Issues, Loneliness, Laziness, Drugs, Life, etc. And the Love Songs they did record had a more Mature, Sophistication about them, with the possible exception of Good Day Sunshine. Nothing on Revolver sounds anything like their previous songs. That was really their whole idea. Was to Progress from Album to Album. I believe they did, right up to the end. But Revolver was definitely a Peak.
I'm not trying to be argumentative, Dominic. I totally respect your opinion. Believe Me, I love Rubber Soul. Like George said in the Anthology, those 2 albums are like Vol. 1 and 2 and I agree. In fact, Norwegian Wood is My All Time Favorite Beatles' song. But I find that with Revolver, to Me it's just 14 Great songs all on 1 Album.
@@carlweaver3243 I agree. But truth be told I almost always play both albums. I have a playlist with the singles and Rubber Soul and Revolver. Probably my most played playlist on my phone! Rain could be in my all time top 5 of theirs. But then again, it's so hard to choose even a top 20.
Revolver is still my favourite album. I keep going back to it and everytime i do it still makes me think how amazing it is.

I think many of us -(fans of the "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Beatles)- weren't ready for 'Tomorrow Never Knows'; we didn't understand or appreciate it. But it-
like all of Revolver- is absolute genius. The Beatles were evolving.

I loved it when I first heard it. I thought all the sound effects were hilarious and they come out best in RM11, which is finally commercially available on the box set WHICH I've downloaded from I tunes for the meantime. I don't have 200 bucks for the box as of yet.
And Your Bird Can Sing is a great little rocker with a joyful guitar arrangement, I love it. It must have been a very primitive, undeveloped version initially for the guys to think it was boring!
1966 was also the year, image wise, when fashion and music reached their zenith in the 60s, The Beatles themselves looking in that year the most collectively COOL that they ever would, still part uniform suits on stage but now with floral shirts and tobacco-coloured sunglasses, Carnaby Street incarnate...
Well said... They looked very relaxed and cool. Their best look overall in my opinion. Rubber Soul look was just about the same too, but another close second to me was the Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields look they had before the Release of Sgt. Pepper. Getting back to 1966, I think the artwork on the Collection of Beatles Oldies album released in the U.K in December of that year was also influenced by the artwork of Revolver and the back photo with them in all relaxed in shades.
When Paper Back Writer was released in 1966 as a single, I could feel the change in pop music 🎶🎵 but when Revolver was released it was definite 👍. They were still touring behind this album in 66 but they couldn't really play any songs from the album because it was studio advanced for its time. Another classic album by the Beatles!!
We actually used to sing Yellow Submarine when it came out while riding to school. One guy even brought his guitar and accompanied us. Eventually our bus driver put the kebosh on that.
If memory serves me this album changed the thinking of people around the world. From mop top to four very serious pop rock artists. Love all their music.
First Beatles album I got. To my youthful surprise, the guy at the counter said it was their best.

Very well done, thank you. I never could decide between Revolver and Rubber Soul, as far as which one was my favorite. On another subject….Paul has said in the past that “Got to Get You Into My Life” was actually about marijuana and his love for it at that time. Of course, everyone assumed it was about a girl, but it was actually about “Mary Jane”. 😏😉 Read the lyrics and it definitely fits.
I just read the lyrics. "Mary Jane" isn't in the lyrics. Reminds me of the game we used to play when we were kids in the 60s. We would get a copy of the Top 40 songs for the week and add "under the covers" and laugh and laugh. Somehow those words always seem to fit. "I got to get you into my life under the covers". Ha ha ha ha. I'll have to read the lyrics of other songs and imagine them being related to marijuana -- "I can't get no satisfaction without marijuana". Fits doesn't it?

They're both great albums. I always preferred Rubber Soul. While it wasn't as experimental as Revolver, the folk rock songwriting on it was elegant. You can sing most of the songs on the album accompanied by nothing more than an acoustic guitar.

Also, yellow Submarine was a sad song penned by John, which you can hear in the revolver 2022 release and the song was made "happy" by paul
Eleanor Rigby was not influenced by Pet Sounds. The song was written in early 66 and recorded in April a month before Pet Sounds was released. It was Here, There and Everywhere that was partly influenced by Pet Sounds.
Sgt Pepper was inspired by Pet Sounds, such as the animal noises at the end of Caroline No and in the Reprise of the title track towards the end.

RubberSoul was the breaker and Revolver was the musical move that fully heralded the new sound .....just so good. Then, '67 was cataclysmic, a brilliant year in their music, superb songs.
To me Revolver sounds like a perfect transition to Pepper. it still has the acoustic feel of Rubber Soul with I’m only Sleeping and simplicity of Here There and Everywhere but then has George’s Indian song, the orchestrated Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows which foreshadows many Pepper tracks.
In my opinion, “She said, She said” is the BEST Beatles song I ever heard. “Tomorrow never knows” is a fairly close second. Lennon really knew how to turn the mind upside down.

I consider Revolver to be the best Beatles album of all time. Eleanor Rigby is also one of their greatest songs, perhaps the best ever.
There was and is an excitement to Revolver because it was the crux of the transition of not just the group, but the decade of the '60s itself.
My favourite Beatles album is Rubber Soul, but everyone of them are great. I think I once read that George Harrison called Revolver "Rubber Soul Part II," but I can't confirm that now.
To me, this time period was their most creative and influential. Their creativity was evident on Rubber Soul, but time constraints really limited what they could do. By the time 1966 started, the handcuffs were officially off and they were able to spend nearly 4 months recording Revolver. I guess I've always been a fan of the journey, because those two albums showed the initial steps. Obviously, what came next was both odd and intriguing, but the polished production of Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour just don't strike that creative raw energy that they resonated here.
There was less output by The Beatles in 1966 up to that point, but it was also the year where their music was at its most consistent, and where they really began to flourish artistically.
Their guitar work is at an all time high on Revolver.
Revolver, full of great songs, including 2 of the most beautiful ballads ever written. And what a change from the previous album, wow!
because of the recent re-release, we now know the verses of Yellow Submarine was a song by John Lennon about no one caring, and the chorus a song by Paul McCartney about living in a yellow submarine.

Revolver is a great album. Surprisingly, the band never performed any of the songs live even though several like Taxman and Dr. Robert could have been pulled off on stage. I heard somewhere that Dr. Robert was a reference to Max Jacobsen, also known as Dr. Feelgood. He gave shots mixed with all kinds of drugs to many celebrities, including President Kennedy. I also recall hearing that Paul played a demo of Elanor Rigby to a music teacher he was working with at the time and after the music teacher panned it the relationship between the two came to an abrupt end. As for And Your Bird Can Sing, that is one of my favorites. I love the guitar work and Paul's bass lines on that one are awesome. Anyway, Revolver rocks. Thanks for the fair and balanced review.

I love how history changes. That’s been the story of Yellow Submarine for 50 years… then we fins the track on the new Revolver box set that John wrote the demo and it was like 1/2 finished then Paul added the chorus and made it bouncier…
There's a great clip of Leonard Bernstein analyzing every song on Revolver, marvelling at the sophistication, originality and sheer musicality of the songs.
Something I'm sure everyone old enough will feel, is that playing music from one's, in my case, teenage years, evokes memories of what one was doing at the time. I'm 75 so I remember these buggers well. The dancehalls, the people one associated with at the time, particularly the opposite sex, all come back with clarity. Such is the power of music. I ate slept and shat Beatles....
Revolver is hands down my favorite Beatles album followed by Rubber Soul.

The string arrangement on Eleanor Rigby wasn't inspired by the score from Fahrenheit 451. It was inspired by the score from Psycho.
I'm amazed to find out that most of the best lead guitar solos on Beatle records, like Taxman and Sgt Pepper, were actually played by Paul. For the longest time, I thought it was George.
I wish John was able to match Paul’s ambition. I mostly blame depression (perhaps leading to boredom) for causing John to the backseat to Paul post Revolver.
Mcartney needed Lennon to amplify his genius and curb his tendency to sugar sweetness. Be sure that any good work McCartney did post Beatles, he ran past Lennon in his head.

The second Beatles LP I owned, the US Capitol green label copy, I got around 1970. I forget how much it cost at the time, around $3.50 which is a lot less than I paid for an original UK 1st mono pressing many few decades later.
I have revolver 1966 mono press (xex 606-3) that i found on flea market it has some scratches but plays through and sounds good
I have a UK mono XEX 606-1 sounds great but I didn’t get it at a flea market.

John's remark about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus was blown out of proportion by the press. Their supposed snub of the Royals in the Philippines also exaggerated by the media. Luckily, incidents like that drove them off the road and into the studio. That's when the magic really started! Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, the White Album and Abbey Road all created after they stopped touring. Hallelujah!

A quick story about revolver, the band and managers and execs all met to discuss recording the album, Geoff emerick had just gotten the job to do it despite being only 21, many at emi didn't want him to do the album and Geoff himself felt the pressure and was slightly unsure, the Beatles started talking about what they wanted to do with the album saying they wanted sounds no one had ever heard before, right then every head in the room turned and looked at Geoff emerick. 😳 It was on him to deliver a revolutionary recording

I grew up with the Beatles. Got Meet the Beatles album on Christmas Eve, 1963. I was thirteen. ( Also got my first guitar that Christmas. An acoustic, 6-string Stella. ) Due in large part to the Fab Four, I became a professional studio musician. In 1966, the foolish furor in the Bible-belt southern US states was ridiculous. I'm a Canadian and totally understood what John was getting at. Literally, he said, " We're more popular than Jesus. " There were more screaming, adoring fans than there were kids going to church, except in the good old USA. The Ku Klux Klan and DJs threw hissy fits and burned records. Intelligent reaction. Very mature. On the heels of that dumpster fire, they dissed the dictator in the Philippines and ran for their lives to the airport. They also had to give back their concert earnings. I saw their last live concert in Toronto that summer night, Aug. 17th with 17,000 fans. Revolver was released on August 3rd in Canada and I'd already worn out my copy. I thought, " Who are these guys and where are they taking us? " Especially after listening to " Tomorrow Never Knows " about forty times ! Golly!

I found a copy of the Anthology #2 in a pawn shop, last month... 😮 such a pleasure and a honor to hear demos/first takes etc... from their Help/Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt Peppers era. Like we say in french: MALADE!

Kind of a hard take on “And Your Bird Can Sing”. I personally think it’s one of the best songs on the album. Great video though.
After listening and learning about the Beatles since 1975 when I was in 5th grade. Today I came to my own decision and feel and think it was John who broke the band up with his weird and strange ways, he even had words in one of his songs, " Strange Days Indeed"
That " strange days" quote you mentioned, came many years later on a solo album from John called Walls and bridges.

Love this album! Never really appreciated it until the pandemic started. Abbey Road use to be my favorite Beatles album of all time, but that is now second to Revolver.
Can't wait for the newly Giles Martin remix of Revolver coming out late October of this year they're going to use demixing technology used on the Let It Be film, in other words they can separate all the instruments and vocals from the four tracks , there's going to be bonus tracks and outtakes including Rain and Paperback Writer I heard the drumming on Rain is going to sound insane!
