Finnish mythology is pretty poorly known outside of Finland, and even many Finns don't know it very well, probably everyone who has gone to primary school in Finland knows what the Kalevala is, but that's about all they know, the Kalevala is a good book, there's nothing wrong with it, but it's only one a folktale collection compiled by one person.
If some Finnish name would come from name Torsten it would be Torsteni/Torsteeni; that’s how we call Torsten in Torne-river dale and in official minority language “Meän kieli” in Swedish Tornedalen.
Swedish speaking Elias Lönnrot who created Kalevala took quite a few story line and linguistic liberties there.
History dose has a video of Boudicca rebellion check it out.
Hi Americans learn. From your new subscriber wintersun Alex ❄️❤️🌹🫶
Your name can be Torsti in Finland even today....
Torsti and Frosti are not the same name lmao. Not even remotely the same.
Frosti appears in Kalevala poetry as Kuura. Same thing with the king of Kvenland Thorre Snærsson appearing in our mythology as (Iku-)Tiera Nieranpoika. Kaukomieli King of Kainuu is known in the sagas as Faravid king of Kvenland. They're just Norse variants of the Finnish names.
I mean if you hear name Frosti and would like to bring it in Finnish language it most likely would be Torsti. In Finnish words we don’t have letter F - we use letter f only, quite recently times, in foreign words. In a Finns ears Frosti sounds like Torsti and those were times when news and stories were spoken and sung not written. Written Finnish language created in 16th century.
@@artohietanen8576 Cool, but there's still absolutely no grounds to think that Frosti is in any way related to Torsti, especially since that's a very modern Finnish variant of the Swedish name Torsten, further derived from old Norse Þórsteinn. It simply makes no sense.
Just as Faravid is a literal translation of Kaukomieli, and Tiera Nieranpoika/Thorre Snærsson are semantically identical, it only makes sense to deduce that Frosti too would be a direct translation of a Finnish word referring to frost. In fact, Froste Káresson is a mythical Kven/Finnish king, and we find the perfect counterpart for it from Finnish runesongs: "Pakkanen Puhurinpoika."
I don't see how Finnish being a spoken language at the time has anything to do with this. People can translate spoken language. Faravid/Kaukomieli is already a perfect example of this and it only makes sense to think that the sagas would follow the same logic on the naming of all Kven/Finnish kings.
Swedish metal band Månegarm has made really beatiful song and good music video about the same story.
If you still do music reactions (I have seen some earlier) you could maybe react to that. If you decide to do so, search for MANEGARM - En snara av guld (Official Video) | Napalm Records.
If I remember right, the girl in video is sister of the female vocalist 's who is singing in the beginning and end of the song.
Ooh, thanks! I'll check it out!
I saw the vid - it certaily is based on same saga! Can you find a subtitled version? I'm from Finland - jag förstår lite svenska (tack för in Annika, mitt läräre - 100 år sedan...), but MANEGARM should have translated version.
No English subtitles in the video, but translation can be found in description section under
If you are interested, below are links to 4 hour long TV-serie inspired by Kalevala.

When I saw this reaction of vikings I watched it and it was great. But speaking of vikings Americans learn I know you also react to music as well. I know you'll be interested in what I'm about to suggest to you in reacting to my favorite symphonic viking metal band from Finland wintersun. So for my first suggestion is wintersun sons of winter and stars official 1.5:lyric video. Next is the band ensiferum which is jari from wintersuns former band before he left and formed wintersun which the song is ensiferum LAI LAI HEI which it's sung in Finnish and English. After that is wintersun time live rehearsal video at Sonic pump studio in Helsinki Finland. Next would be ensiferum rum women victory. So if you love nightwish and epica you'll love wintersun and enisferum. Reply back to me to see what you think. Thank you.wintersun Alex ❄️❤️🫶👍
I listen Wintersun also, but their Sons Of Winter and Sun - with Kai in drums!
!(I'd be in ER after first three minutes, LOL), lenght is a problem 14+ minutes makes it hard to split. And it loses a lot... I can suggest 10+ min.
The few YT I did (never anymore) - behind the upload YT reactors just don't lay back and have cup of tea ( well they may? What do I know *grin*)
I listened to some british historian talking about the vikings. He said that since the vikings and such people didnt know how to read they where truthful in their stories. Because how else can you pass down "data" to the next generation. Therefore their stories would be more to the truthful side. thoughts? Doesnt mean everything is true ofc etc. But it makes sense. And their truth might not be "true"
taas mennään torille 🏃🏻♂
