SORRY! There was an error in the last video, ANNNND since UA-cam doesn't let you make any corrections, I had to upload a brand new one! Here it is! Tell me, were there any other rules that surprised you in Shadowdark? If so, list them below. And thanks for being patient with my boo-boo!
Nice video! I love how you get right to the point. Just pure distilled Shadowdark goodness, whereas other videos would be bloated and take forever to say the same exact things. Quick, informative, and entertaining. I've subscribed and hope to see more. Well done!
I've never heard of Shadowdark but now I'm obsessed after looking it up. All the old school dark fantasy black and white art and the race against the torch running out. Thanks for making me aware of this😂 Also great video!
@@TheDungeonDamsel It makes for a book you don't mind referencing during a game cause you know it's not going to waste your time. It's the difference between a product that wants to be read then sit on a shelf vs one that insists to be used at the table in the chaos and heat of gameplay.
It is fun, but I don't know about it being like Pathfinder? I feel like Pathfinder is more like D&D with the skills, and die rolls. The rules for SD are so much more brutal!
@@TheDungeonDamsel Yes! just more feeling like the way Pathfinder was a natural update of D&D 3.5, Shadowdark feels like the same: A natural progression and modernization of OSR style play or basic fantasy to something more customizable and powerful. Definitely more brutal than Pathfinder! But then it really just ends up to the DM. RAW and baseline fore sure. I'm excited to see new content for it so soon after it's release!
Shadowdark is a very nice game! But are so many people unfamiliar with Castles & Crusades. SD did for 5e D&D what C&C did for 3Ed D&D. Although SD is more grimdark than C&C, although if you want grim dark you can also go with something like Lamentation of the Flame Princess or Labyrinth Lord. btw: The torch mechanic comes from an indie game called Torchbearer (2016).
Great video with a lot of extremely useful information delivered in a quick and comprehensive manner. I believe you will have a successful future in your video endeavors.
oh! I got one for you Page 269 states "Wandering Monsters have only a 50% chance of carrying treasure. " I completely forgot about this. I assume that means if you roll a d100 and get higher than 50 you then roll on the following treasure charts based on your Party Level?
I thought Initiative is used only to see who goes first then players take turn from left to right to make "who goes next", easier to track. I thought this was a rule Shadowdark specifically used to make inititive tracking easier but I could be wrong or misheard you.
When you roll initiative, whomever rolls highest is the beginning of initiative. Everybody then takes turns in clockwise order (including the GM!) until it comes back to the starting player, and then the next round begins.
Awe thanks! I tried my best and feel very happy with it. I am almost certain I might be good at voice acting. I've never done anything like this before, or appeared on camera. I'm usually too shy!
Ooh! That's a good one that I didn't realize. Thanks for mentioning it. OR you can make it so when a new torch goes on, all the others goes out. Crazy!
Wow, that's really non-intuitive. I was wondering why everyone made such a big deal out of torches. I mean, they are relatively light-weight and staggering them seems like an obvious notion. Having torches artificially shut off together is really immersion-breaking.
I am thinking that I'll be making a video simply on torches in Shadowdark, and what happens when they go out, how the rules are intended to work and how the DM can leave it up to their discretion.
These are really great, I have missed rules several times. In the way 5e stuff doesn't always apply, there are lots of B/X stuff that don't apply too that I made mistakes with early on. SD is not 5e, it is also not B/X (even if that's the basic underlying design startpoint). The whole book is just worth reading and knowing and I keep being surprised when I read it.
Thank you! I was trying to clarify some stuff. Read the book. Then I was like guess I'll Google. This video popped up and I was like...hey I backed Unnatural Selection from them! And then you answered what I needed. Thank you!
Thank you first of all for being a supporter, and thank you for this comment! I'm happy I could help offer clarification on some obscure things. Let me know if there is anything else you'd like me to make a video on that could help out yourself and others!
Thanks, this helps! I actually try and play with gridless maps, this enforces the rule of distance freedom that the game enjoys. Generally a player can get from one end of a room to another on their turn. Outside is a little different however, then I'll have a grid.
When I did my first gauntlet, I learned that! I wasn't aware before then tho. And the con bonus was something I learned then as well. I thought it would be beneficial to make a video to help other people figure it out!
Great video! I fully ditched 5e for Shadowdark and love it. Got a question tho: p89 under Damage says "Roll your weapon or spell's damage dice + relevant bonuses". I thought Dex and Str mods are part of relevant bonuses... I know it's up to me ultimately. Did Kelsey say somewhere that damage doesn't include Dex and Str bonuses? Just curious. Keep making Shadowdark videos! Subscribed. :)
I did as well, and thank you for the sub! It may mean for the fighter class where depending on the relevant weapon of their weapon mastery, they get a plus 1 to their attack roll and damage die. Also with the thief, they have a backstab bonus. The "relevant bonuses" I believe are referring to that sort of thing. I did re-read it, and maybe what I learned was from a different edition. Oh and I will also be uploading a video tomorrow!
Haha nice catch. I did in-fact say that on porpoise. I like them gone, as it's much safer in this deadly environment for the PCs to not be attacked for jumping in and out.
Since most enemies will have double if not triple the amount of health, and typically do more damage per attack than a player, not having the STR or DEX modifier added to the damage roll for a PC can be devastating. Thank you for asking this question!
@@aurvay I'm sorry to hear that you won't be giving it a shot. The Quickstart is free, and the game shouldn't be passed up without giving it a try. If you've ever enjoyed 1e, or Basic Fantasy, don't miss out on something that feels like a classic.
Welp... they die! Keep them far enough away, and be sure the melee people are in the enemies face so they have no choice but to kill what's in front of them first!
@@TheDungeonDamsel Thanks for the reply! I ask because I've been toying with getting rid of attacks of opportunity in my game, but I don't necessarily want monsters to (mechanically, anyway) have nothing preventing them from walking past the frontline to the squishy caster in the rear.
I understand where you're coming from kinda, but I also think that combat being simplistic helps speed things along, giving you an action packed adventure that's also very fulling and rewarding. Leaves more space for theater of the mind and role-play. This is my opinion 🥰
Yes very - but you can change it up like most of the rules. The game is meant to be super easy. I came from 2e and thought 2e was easy for me to DM SDark almost seems way to simple so I change it up as I go.
For some odd reason, everything sounds more reasonable and interesting when a pretty gal in a black choker is telling you about it. :) J/K, Shadowdark rocks and thx for the clarification.

I think the most commonly overlooked rule is that when a monster is down to half hits it makes a morale check (unless undead).
There were so many rules, I had a giant list that I had to narrow down.
@@TheDungeonDamsel And a fine job you did too - thoroughly enjoyed this video.
In Ad&d if you had a high enough str stat you got a bonus to damage. I would house rule that and say half your stat bonus round down.
How does not adding one’s ability modifier to the damage roll makes the game deadlier? It makes the combat safer for the players if nothing else.
Otherwise, a great video. I had qualms about if this game was for me, and now it’s clear that it indeed, is not.

Just add it - I do.
1 PC can make a CHA roll at beginning of encounter to improve its attitude. Can turn a hostile (thus a fight) down to a roleplay interaction instead.

Torches should not last an hour...15 minutes for self-made torches, maybe 30 minutes for expert crafted torches...but an hour...no way!
I think the hour allows for the players to meta chit chat outside of the game. Players typically only use the torch for 15-30 minutes.
