Tobe Hooper, when making Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, knew that he couldn't top the first movies gritty tone, horrific visuals. And i think he knew that no one could, really. Anything else would have been the same shit. And i think cinematic history has shown that he was totally correct.
It sorta reminds me how the third Halloween film had a completely different plot from the first two, because it was assumed the Michael Myers story would just be a two-part thing. Evidently things didn't turn out that way.
He knew,he meant tcm2 to be flat out comedy,plus a town of cannibals.The cannibal town idea was also going to be used in the Ken Foree one,it was abandoned.
Out of all the Texas Chainsaw sequels, the only one I consider canon, and think of as good, is TCM2. Everything after that was just a downward spiral into chaotic nonsense (and not the good kind either; noooo, no-ho-ho, I'm talkin' Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson at their most bonkers and divisive, chaotic nonsense).

Yep; I agree. The original has an important place in the history of cinema but because it's such an effective film, I do not think it is necessarily a very entertaining film. I do not watch it often and that is out of respect for it. The sequel is also a very effective film but, unlike the first, it sets out to titillate its audience and what a wild ride it is. It's the one in the series I easily find the most entertaining, and the most quotable... For a long time, it seemed to not really have much of a fan base but I think in the last fifteen years or so have really seen it get a lot more respect
I liked the second one too. My favorite part was the bridge scene. It was just so wild! The family's hide out was crazy too. It reminds me of that one movie 'Nothing But Trouble' just how junky and dilapidated everything looked.

The inherent problem with the concept of continued sequels is that Leatherface and company weren't really written or designed to be active serial killers like other horror movie villains. A Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, & Freddy Krueger can be made into those that stalk victims in many environments because they're evil and/or sadistic murderers driven to slay people no matter the circumstance. The family in the original film were psychopathic weirdos, but they pretty much stuck to their own area and only went after those that stumbled upon them. Heck, Leatherface himself could be argued as not even being outright evil in the 1974 movie, just a mentally disabled man very warped by his bizarre family and violently reacting to strangers invading his home. So beyond the fact that it was the family and not just Leatherface helped make the original concept work, the very core premise is something tricky to make continued entries in without exactly recycling the plot, because happening upon a rural house of horrors with a deranged clan is baked into what Texas Chainsaw Massacre is. And the novel variations they have tried to spice it up rarely work because of that problem specifically.
Voorhees, Myers and Krueger lend themselves to sequels better than Leatherface, because those characters were consciously created in such a way that "they can stalk victims in many different environments"? Haddonfield, Crystal lake...and , the third features The Literal Street name in every title...and yet they have made it work. I don't quite understand your excuse-lending here. Quality TCM films should be no more or less challenging than any of the other three franchises. Being boxed-in by the source material is not the problem. The TCM sequels are just poorly written, poorly executed, lame ideas.

It be hard to do like a Leatherface takes Manhattan because at the end of the day he's human, Jason can fight gang members and boxers in Manhattan because he's not human.
@@niceguy1774 While I’ve never been a fan of the TCM films, I was a always a fan of the those other three series (Jason, Michael, and Freddy), and I can’t agree with you that Leatherface wasn’t any different from them and that the TCM sequels only failed due to poor writing, etc. The TCM films are definitely more challenging to create a franchise out of; whereas the big three of the 80’s were simple stalk and slash killers offing teenager after teenager, the TCM films were about an entire family with a much more complicated situation. Leatherface didn’t just kill a teen and then go off to find the next one, rinse, repeat; he wore their skin, and their family ate people. The goal wasn’t the killing itself as it was with the big 3. And none of them was intended to become a franchise-hell, Jason wasn’t even the killer in the original! They only lent themselves to sequels more readily because they were simpler killers. Freddy was inarguably the more complex of the three, but he was still just another stalk and slash killer offing teenagers. The more the big 3 sequels tried to elaborate on their villains, the worse the films got precisely because they weren’t complicated villains to begin with, and their relative simplicity made them much, much scarier. The original TCM was absolutely terrifying, but it was also deeply disturbing. And that’s what ultimately separated it from the others and created a barrier to success in its sequels that the big 3 never had, and almost no one could argue that Halloween 5-8, Friday the 13th 7-10, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4-6 (and the godawful Freddy vs. Jason) weren’t poorly written and directed. The writing got lazier and lazier and strayed farther and farther from their roots and what made the originals so great. TCM probably should have remained a one-off, but anyone approaching one of its sequels like it was any other slasher franchise was destined to fail.
No many the number of sequels, remake, prequels, reboots, whatever else there could be associated with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre get made, the original 1974 film will always stand and be incredible to watch at any point. Nothing can bring that film down.

Tobe Hooper knew you simply couldn't recapture that lightning in a bottle. That's why he didn't try and why his winking, deconstructive sequel is the only other TCM production worth a damn.

Not so fun fact: Bryanston Distribution Company, the company with the creepy opening logo that distributed the first movie, also screwed over the cast, took most of their money and was even run by the mob. I wonder if that had something to do with this franchise’s state.
Gunnar Hansen has a whole chapter in his book Chainsaw Confidential about how the original cast got screwed out of money. Great book, definitely worth a read if you’re a fan of the first film. I have no interest in any of the sequels.
The original victims were not casually out for a drive. They were visiting the grave and homestead of their grandfather. This implicit connection between the victims and their own family origins is the most vital part of the films message, and it's horrific power: that chopping people up, and getting chopped up, as we were then doing in Vietnam, is an inextricable part of our own national history. There is a very, very good reason it's most horrific images take place at the family dinner table: it reminds us we are part of the family, no matter how far we run. This, and the fact that you never see the chainsaw cut the flesh, and how many setups you can make only with 8 feet of camera track, are what make the original film so inspiring to filmmakers. Actual inspired ideas.

Totally agree! A crucial part of the horror is how the family are basically their neighbors just down the road, but in an isolated town like that they’re perfect strangers to each other. The rural horror of the original is frankly lightning in a bottle, with the time period playing a major role in the themes of isolation and fearing what’s unknown yet disturbingly close in more ways than just distance
Unexpected video topic from you, but no complaints. If you started doing horror movies more regularly I would be overjoyed, as I love your style of video making. But I think your comedy-focused videos as great and it’s pretty niche for UA-cam. I’m sure you’ll find the right balance. Excellent content in general.
Return of the Living Dead, Creepshow, Evil Dead 2, Texas Chainsaw 2, the list of horror-comedy films that really work as both is pretty list, but it's fantastic when they get it right.
All good horror is commentary on the day. It seems like trying to force the TCSM into each of the decades following the original just didn't work because it just didn't speak to those days. It will continue to fail because it doesn't have anything to say about now -- and apparently the attempt to make it relevant to today with influencers and cancel culture and whatever other nonsense entirely missed the point of what made TCSM work for its day. Maybe try something new?

I would like to point out that in the original movie, Leatherface uses three masks. The Killer mask is used when he's, well, killing people. The Old Lady mask is worn while he's cooking, cleaning and helping around the house and the Pretty Woman mask is worn during dinner. The idea was that Leatherface, being mentally handicapped, had trouble showing his emotions and used masks as a substitute.
I think it was underrated, particularly compared to the shlock that's come out since. They did everything you could've hoped for with a remake, and while it's not as good it holds its own. Shout out to R Lee and Jessica Biel. Also, the trailers were sick!!

What’s interesting is the franchise has had a movie out in every decade since the first. 1 in the 70s, 1 in the 80s, 2 in the 90s, 2 in the 00s, 2 in the 2010s and 1 so far in the 2020s
It seems like it's because the studios want to do franchises but it keeps failing. The last 3 have definitely been set up for franchises but don't make it.

The 2003 film was pretty good but the lead actress wearing low-rise jeans in a movie that's supposed to take place in the 1970's annoyed the shit out of me. Little things like that can really take you out of the movie as you watch it.
I always saw this channel as a place for cinephiles to enjoy there love of cinema especially classic cinema so while you have mostly covered comedy films I’m all for seeing you discuss horror films. I’m not sure how much of an interest you have in the horror genre but if you do I would love to see you go in depth with certain other films or franchises. I mean horror in my opinion has unique storytelling that is sometimes more then just about the killings.
It's ironic how Halloween escaping it's bad franchise status has lead to Texas Chainsaw Massacre suffering this fate. Yikes! However this video made me realise just how similar Resident Evil 7 was to a proper TCM film. Think about it, it has a creepy southern family in a crappy debilitated house, lots of satistic dismemberment, disgusting food (although no human flesh I think) and one character even wields a chainsaw! Like seriously, a bit of a rewrite and this could've been a great script for a modern chainsaw remake.
Unfortunately, Halloween Kills took it right back to where we started, though. Love every movie in that franchise for various reasons, but HK really neutralized a lot of that goodwill Halloween '18 bought the series.
Of course Leatherface wouldn’t remember Sally, he’s just a mindless killer. If a farmer’s pig escapes, I doubt said farmer would remember the pig 50 years later. Especially when Leatherface would never have known any of their names.
The first 2 are masterpieces for different reasons. I've yet to see any of the others but I've seen clips, reviews and read about them. From what I can tell, every time someone has made a sequel, there has been a big enough backlash to where they want to wipe the slate clean and start again. If they'd just continued down the path started by TCM2, then the franchise could have been a lot more successful. It's the constant trying to erase what went before that has lead to it's downfall. I'd love to see a proper sequel to TCM2, and Tobe Hooper's son was making one called All American Massacre which we're unlikely to ever see. Personally, I just want more Chop Top. There's so much that could be done with the character and Bill Moseley would love to play the part again.
I agree with every word you said, but the tragic part is that we're way beyond the opportunity for a direct sequel to TCM2, most people who aren't fans haven't seen that movie, and Chop Top's glorious character is even more obscure.
i love The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 and 2, both movies work so well as their own thing, one being a horror film and the other being a straight-up parody of the first plus chop top is such a great character

I said give the franchise to an experienced director like Robert Rodriguez who knows horror and is actually from Texas. His movies may be sometimes good and sometimes bad but at the very least he has a vision.

More entertaining than the whole recent movie ( minus the bus massacre scene, which satisfied the gore hound in me;but nothing more than that) Massacre’s timeline is more confusing than Halloween’s; and that’s saying something! Massacre should have just ended after part 2, and honestly, even part 2 isn’t truly needed. Much like Michael Myers, Leatherface works best when we know next to nothing about him. Just lingering possibility that Leatherface is just out there, and that anyone could just stumble him and the family is immediately more terrifying than seeing constant reboots.
The take you had on LeatherFace's motivation was and has never been evil. Jason and Michael are sharks, pure evil, craving blood for the kill. Where as LF is more of a cornered animal, lashing out in his own attempt to survive. With the mind of a child and no immortality, he isn't bad for the sake of bad. His driven by the fear of disappointing/losing his family.
Michael, yes, but you might want to replace Jason with Freddy. Freddy is very much a shark, he was unrepentant in life, and in death he's only become more monstrous. Jason is more like an overgrown child, doing what he does out of a warped sense of love for his mother. He carries on what she started, perhaps thinking she will come back if he stops anyone from coming to the Crystal Lake area for whatever reason.
They were riding so hard on Halloween 2018 for the newest film, that it’s so forced, it’s distracting. I would have loved to see what the originally shot film was intended to be, before it was taken away from the original director. Would it have been better than the crap we ended up getting?
I've never seen your channel before, but this video was good. I laughed at the intro in agreement. Very clever. To me, there's only one TCM, & that's the 1974 original. It's my favorite slasher. The atmosphere of that film, will never be duplicated. I was pissed when I heard there was going to be a remake. I thought to myself, how preposterous. I am a fan of 3D though. The third installment of the hockey masked wearing killer, looks fantastic on my 80 inch 3D TV. I'll definitely check more of your more of your content. 👍
My favorite part of the new one is when Leatherface is mowing his way through dozens of people on a party bus, and a group of them just helplessly push against the window instead of breaking it or opening it. Then when Leatherface finally reaches one character in particular, she opens the window. She had like five minutes to do that, but waited until Leatherface got to her. I started cheering when he killed her.
What's interesting is I wondered if the joke was supposed to be these helpless Gen Z kids can't fight back. The movie is actually more self aware then I think people give it credit for, remember the contractor fought back.
@@micahjohnsonboxing6409 The main problem with that movie, aside from its shameless cashing in on the success of _Halloween_ (2018) is that there's just nobody really to root for. It wants us to sympathize with both the influencers, at least, the main four or five, but it also wants you to sympathize with Leatherface somewhat. Thus we have nobody to really want to see win at the end, and thus no investment in any of the characters. I think this movie could really have benefited by having the Sawyers in it, at least then you'd have clear-cut villains to root against. Like, after he loses his adopted mom, Leatherface runs away because he's scared of all these people who are trying to take his home away. Then he stumbles upon some place and finds some relative who heard stories about him. Then that relative pushes him back towards the saw. It is family, after all.
Like when Heather in 3D decides that rather than run away from Leatherface she'll get on a ferris wheel which will just take her back around to where she was a few minutes later so Leatherface just has to wait for it to bring her back down to kill.
There's a story that I think sums up why the original movie is still to this day effective: When James Furman, the Director of the British Board of Film Classification at the time, tried to cut the movie, he found that he couldn't - all the most horrendous violence takes place offscreen, making the film seem far more disturbing and scary than if they just showed all the gore. They use the atmosphere and acting to cover for the outright gore and it's so much more effective than watching 20+ people being murdered imo.
Unpopular opinion, I actually liked the 2003 remake and especially the 2006 prequel that came after. Other than that, 1 and 2 are obviously the best. But I also think the 3rd movie is underrated
I swear I will never understand how TCM 3 is "bad" by any means. I see it in a lot of videos listed as a BAD SEQUEL but its actually FINE and enjoyable. Nothing crazy, just straight down the line slasher stuff. Doesnt go out of it's way to explain anything, but I actually like how it just stays pretty simple. The cast is great, movie is entertaining and enjoyable. Compared to most of the garbage after, like this new shit heap, it's a masterpiece. Just a pretty simple slasher movie. Considering how STUPID convoluted and ridiculous some of the more recent movies have been, going out of their way to explain everything ever and give everything an origin, etc, I appreciate how 3 just doesn't bother and tosses some chatacters into the woods with leatherface and a new family. Simple.
I’ve been watching you for maybe a year now, and the editing has gotten so comedic. Like the first time you cut to the guy negotiating, I thought it was kinda funny, but when it came around the 3rd and 4th time I literally pissed myself. Same with the “get the fuck out of here” clip where she throws the keys, it was funny at first but the way it goes along with your script when you use it is genius. 10/10 man, you should be doing bigger numbers
I really appreciate the use of Monster Chiller Horror Theater from SCTV. John Candy and Eugene Levy were so wonderful together, and I absolutely adored those skits as a kid growing up.
Another shame is that their is already another Texas Chainsaw Massacre film that was shot and then never released, called All American Massacre, featuring Bill Mosely as Chop Top.

No. They need a direct sequel to the second one but time jumping 1986 to now. And to just go with that it was leather faces twin that got gutted by Dennis hopper. That would simplify everything. (That’s my impression of Hollywood) They really should just make the next one stand out by making “The Wisconsin woodchipper massacre”, Then the “Nebraska table saw massacre”. Isn’t it a crime that I don’t work in Hollywood?
I remember when the Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation and Star Trek: The Next Generation had a crossover and Leatherface chopped Data up into little chunks. That was the high point of the series
When the new Netflix TCM came out I checked out the hashtag that was trending for it and I saw near unanimous praise for it which got me thinking that I misjudged the early PR for it. That got me by surprise because I feel like I've become very good at making judgments based on marketing material as far as the quality of the end product goes. Must have been just bought impressions or twitter crowd being as nuts as twitter tends to be, a learning moment for me that's for sure.
But leatherface was still overpowered. Definitely doesn't feel as dirty or rusty as the original either with it's bigger budget studio work. I still enjoyed it though

I love the sequel with Dennis Hopper. I think part of what made the first one so scary is we did think it was based on a true story, kind of like the found footage movies in modern times. There was no internet. The movie just showed up and you either saw it or you didn't. I saw #2 in the theater.
I just stumbled across your video, and you and so many of the comments have got it right; the original had so much subtext, intentionally and accidentally, that can be read into it. Also Leatherface is not superhuman; in many respects, he is as much a victim of his deranged family as the people he carves up. They, didn't hunt victims in the original; you can probably argue that if they hadn't gone in their house, their only contact with the family would have been the desecrated corpses at the cemetery.
The first one was hilarious. People tend to overlook how comedic the family is. Yes, it's meant to be gross, but it is wonderfully campy as well and no one seemed to pick up on it
I picked up on the humor in the first one. First time I saw it, I especially LOLed in the last scene with Leatherface stumbling around in the street with his trusty chainsaw!
The mask analogy was perfect. This was a really good video. I didn't like this movie at all being part of the franchise. It works on its own and the horror elements are good, but not for the franchise. Especially when they did one already like you said. And somehow, this one makes the 3D one look amazing!
The 2022 film got Leatherface’s character all wrong. Not only is he the main villain, but he’s the only villain. In the original film and the sequels, he’s not the real villain, it’s his family. Leatherface isn’t evil, he’s mentally handicapped and he kills because he doesn’t know any better and because his family tells him to, not for revenge or anything. For a film that’s trying to be a direct sequel to the original, it seems to completely not understand the original.

On the topic of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, I wanna mention there's an interesting review by Kim Newman regarding TCM 2 who stated that it appears to be directed by somebody who not only didn't make The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but didn't actually see it.
This is the sort of film introspection I aspired to achieve, I have however done none at all .this is how to make a documentary and you have done this series a service...what a wonderful presentation .well done .
The original is one of my favorite movies ever made . Yet I agree about the sequel just because it went in such a different and crazy direction . Also it's down right hilarious.
I feel like if the sequels post TCM 2 stuck more with the social commentary and themes of how corrupt the American dream can be instead of just focusing on the kills and the shock value maybe they'd be assessed a lot better. EDIT: I noticed in the first two films that Leatherface, aka Bubba Sawyer, was more acting on the orders of his brothers than anything else - especially from Drayton Sawyer. It's ironic that they struggle with mental illness yet bully and abuse him for having the same. I'm pretty sure the older brothers, especially Drayton, have a strong case of internalized ableism and intergenerational trauma.
With how much they revere Grandpa, who is basically a mummy, it's probably a safe bet that there's some generational abuse and trauma in how Drayton controls his brothers and takes out his frustrations on them.

It was him quitting his job at the slaughterhouse because he didn't like the new machines they used to kill the animals and preferred his hammer and the rest of them being fired later on because less workers were needed that started everything off.

I've never hated a TCM before. Some I thought were ridiculous. Some weren't the most entertaining, nail-biting experience. But this new one... man I fucking hated it pure and simple 🤦♂️
This might be a hot take but I actually liked the 2003 remake but then again it was the first movie in the franchise I had seen and I was a teenager. It was scary and I enjoyed R. Lee Ermy's performance. I haven't rewatched it so maybe it doesn't hold up but compared to other movies in the franchise It's fine and did it's job as a horror movie. I don't get why it has so many bad reviews, It's gold compared to this new film.
Can some one enlighten me as to why the original of this franchise is so revered? My brother and I finally sat down and watched it either last year or in 2020 and I just don't get it. I've been a horror fan for about 20 years and I've watched a large amount of films from a variety of eras. Even though most older horror films don't especially frighten me it's usually easy to see why they might have frightened audiences of the day and why they're important to the genre. This was just a boring, incoherent mess. Leatherface and his family were definitely creepy, as was the reveal about their meat supply, but the rest of the movie was just painfully dull. I also dearly wish that they'd killed the last girl and that they'd done it very, very early in the film. I normally always feel for the victims as is usually intended but after a certain point the only two sound elements in the movie were some form of communication between the family or the last girl screaming endlessly. The former at least added some flavor to the movie but her screaming just got so obnoxious so quickly. I get that that's what an average, real human being would do if they were to find themselves in such a bizarre and dreadful situation, but this is a fucking movie. There's no reason to spend an hour listening to somebody scream while adding almost zero substance or story progression or, really, fucking ANYTHING to balance it out.

It sorta reminds me how the third Halloween film had a completely different plot from the first two, because it was assumed the Michael Myers story would just be a two-part thing. Evidently things didn't turn out that way.

Out of all the Texas Chainsaw sequels, the only one I consider canon, and think of as good, is TCM2. Everything after that was just a downward spiral into chaotic nonsense (and not the good kind either; noooo, no-ho-ho, I'm talkin' Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson at their most bonkers and divisive, chaotic nonsense).

The second movie is such a gem of schlocky goodness. A legitimately great sequel that did something new rather than retread the original that deserves more love.
Yep; I agree. The original has an important place in the history of cinema but because it's such an effective film, I do not think it is necessarily a very entertaining film. I do not watch it often and that is out of respect for it. The sequel is also a very effective film but, unlike the first, it sets out to titillate its audience and what a wild ride it is. It's the one in the series I easily find the most entertaining, and the most quotable... For a long time, it seemed to not really have much of a fan base but I think in the last fifteen years or so have really seen it get a lot more respect
I liked the second one too. My favorite part was the bridge scene. It was just so wild! The family's hide out was crazy too. It reminds me of that one movie 'Nothing But Trouble' just how junky and dilapidated everything looked.

The inherent problem with the concept of continued sequels is that Leatherface and company weren't really written or designed to be active serial killers like other horror movie villains. A Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, & Freddy Krueger can be made into those that stalk victims in many environments because they're evil and/or sadistic murderers driven to slay people no matter the circumstance.
The family in the original film were psychopathic weirdos, but they pretty much stuck to their own area and only went after those that stumbled upon them. Heck, Leatherface himself could be argued as not even being outright evil in the 1974 movie, just a mentally disabled man very warped by his bizarre family and violently reacting to strangers invading his home.
So beyond the fact that it was the family and not just Leatherface helped make the original concept work, the very core premise is something tricky to make continued entries in without exactly recycling the plot, because happening upon a rural house of horrors with a deranged clan is baked into what Texas Chainsaw Massacre is. And the novel variations they have tried to spice it up rarely work because of that problem specifically.

Voorhees, Myers and Krueger lend themselves to sequels better than Leatherface, because those characters were consciously created in such a way that "they can stalk victims in many different environments"?
Haddonfield, Crystal lake...and , the third features The Literal Street name in every title...and yet they have made it work.

@@niceguy1774 While I’ve never been a fan of the TCM films, I was a always a fan of the those other three series (Jason, Michael, and Freddy), and I can’t agree with you that Leatherface wasn’t any different from them and that the TCM sequels only failed due to poor writing, etc. The TCM films are definitely more challenging to create a franchise out of; whereas the big three of the 80’s were simple stalk and slash killers offing teenager after teenager, the TCM films were about an entire family with a much more complicated situation. Leatherface didn’t just kill a teen and then go off to find the next one, rinse, repeat; he wore their skin, and their family ate people. The goal wasn’t the killing itself as it was with the big 3. And none of them was intended to become a franchise-hell, Jason wasn’t even the killer in the original! They only lent themselves to sequels more readily because they were simpler killers. Freddy was inarguably the more complex of the three, but he was still just another stalk and slash killer offing teenagers. The more the big 3 sequels tried to elaborate on their villains, the worse the films got precisely because they weren’t complicated villains to begin with, and their relative simplicity made them much, much scarier. The original TCM was absolutely terrifying, but it was also deeply disturbing. And that’s what ultimately separated it from the others and created a barrier to success in its sequels that the big 3 never had, and almost no one could argue that Halloween 5-8, Friday the 13th 7-10, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4-6 (and the godawful Freddy vs. Jason) weren’t poorly written and directed. The writing got lazier and lazier and strayed farther and farther from their roots and what made the originals so great. TCM probably should have remained a one-off, but anyone approaching one of its sequels like it was any other slasher franchise was destined to fail.
No many the number of sequels, remake, prequels, reboots, whatever else there could be associated with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre get made, the original 1974 film will always stand and be incredible to watch at any point. Nothing can bring that film down.

The original victims were not casually out for a drive. They were visiting the grave and homestead of their grandfather. This implicit connection between the victims and their own family origins is the most vital part of the films message, and it's horrific power: that chopping people up, and getting chopped up, as we were then doing in Vietnam, is an inextricable part of our own national history. There is a very, very good reason it's most horrific images take place at the family dinner table: it reminds us we are part of the family, no matter how far we run. This, and the fact that you never see the chainsaw cut the flesh, and how many setups you can make only with 8 feet of camera track, are what make the original film so inspiring to filmmakers. Actual inspired ideas.

Totally agree! A crucial part of the horror is how the family are basically their neighbors just down the road, but in an isolated town like that they’re perfect strangers to each other. The rural horror of the original is frankly lightning in a bottle, with the time period playing a major role in the themes of isolation and fearing what’s unknown yet disturbingly close in more ways than just distance
And despite all of this, we've still never gotten that Chop-Top Movie that's been lost for over 20 years now.

I would like to point out that in the original movie, Leatherface uses three masks. The Killer mask is used when he's, well, killing people. The Old Lady mask is worn while he's cooking, cleaning and helping around the house and the Pretty Woman mask is worn during dinner. The idea was that Leatherface, being mentally handicapped, had trouble showing his emotions and used masks as a substitute.

I think it was underrated, particularly compared to the shlock that's come out since. They did everything you could've hoped for with a remake, and while it's not as good it holds its own. Shout out to R Lee and Jessica Biel. Also, the trailers were sick!!

The 2003 film was pretty good but the lead actress wearing low-rise jeans in a movie that's supposed to take place in the 1970's annoyed the shit out of me. Little things like that can really take you out of the movie as you watch it.
I always saw this channel as a place for cinephiles to enjoy there love of cinema especially classic cinema so while you have mostly covered comedy films I’m all for seeing you discuss horror films. I’m not sure how much of an interest you have in the horror genre but if you do I would love to see you go in depth with certain other films or franchises. I mean horror in my opinion has unique storytelling that is sometimes more then just about the killings.
It's ironic how Halloween escaping it's bad franchise status has lead to Texas Chainsaw Massacre suffering this fate. Yikes!
However this video made me realise just how similar Resident Evil 7 was to a proper TCM film. Think about it, it has a creepy southern family in a crappy debilitated house, lots of satistic dismemberment, disgusting food (although no human flesh I think) and one character even wields a chainsaw!
Like seriously, a bit of a rewrite and this could've been a great script for a modern chainsaw remake.
Unfortunately, Halloween Kills took it right back to where we started, though. Love every movie in that franchise for various reasons, but HK really neutralized a lot of that goodwill Halloween '18 bought the series.

Of course Leatherface wouldn’t remember Sally, he’s just a mindless killer. If a farmer’s pig escapes, I doubt said farmer would remember the pig 50 years later. Especially when Leatherface would never have known any of their names.
The first 2 are masterpieces for different reasons. I've yet to see any of the others but I've seen clips, reviews and read about them. From what I can tell, every time someone has made a sequel, there has been a big enough backlash to where they want to wipe the slate clean and start again. If they'd just continued down the path started by TCM2, then the franchise could have been a lot more successful. It's the constant trying to erase what went before that has lead to it's downfall. I'd love to see a proper sequel to TCM2, and Tobe Hooper's son was making one called All American Massacre which we're unlikely to ever see. Personally, I just want more Chop Top. There's so much that could be done with the character and Bill Moseley would love to play the part again.
I agree with every word you said, but the tragic part is that we're way beyond the opportunity for a direct sequel to TCM2, most people who aren't fans haven't seen that movie, and Chop Top's glorious character is even more obscure.

Much like Michael Myers, Leatherface works best when we know next to nothing about him. Just lingering possibility that Leatherface is just out there, and that anyone could just stumble him and the family is immediately more terrifying than seeing constant reboots.
The take you had on LeatherFace's motivation was and has never been evil. Jason and Michael are sharks, pure evil, craving blood for the kill. Where as LF is more of a cornered animal, lashing out in his own attempt to survive. With the mind of a child and no immortality, he isn't bad for the sake of bad. His driven by the fear of disappointing/losing his family.
Michael, yes, but you might want to replace Jason with Freddy. Freddy is very much a shark, he was unrepentant in life, and in death he's only become more monstrous.
Jason is more like an overgrown child, doing what he does out of a warped sense of love for his mother. He carries on what she started, perhaps thinking she will come back if he stops anyone from coming to the Crystal Lake area for whatever reason.
They were riding so hard on Halloween 2018 for the newest film, that it’s so forced, it’s distracting. I would have loved to see what the originally shot film was intended to be, before it was taken away from the original director. Would it have been better than the crap we ended up getting?

I've never seen your channel before, but this video was good. I laughed at the intro in agreement. Very clever. To me, there's only one TCM, & that's the 1974 original. It's my favorite slasher. The atmosphere of that film, will never be duplicated. I was pissed when I heard there was going to be a remake. I thought to myself, how preposterous. I am a fan of 3D though. The third installment of the hockey masked wearing killer, looks fantastic on my 80 inch 3D TV. I'll definitely check more of your more of your content. 👍
My favorite part of the new one is when Leatherface is mowing his way through dozens of people on a party bus, and a group of them just helplessly push against the window instead of breaking it or opening it. Then when Leatherface finally reaches one character in particular, she opens the window. She had like five minutes to do that, but waited until Leatherface got to her. I started cheering when he killed her.
What's interesting is I wondered if the joke was supposed to be these helpless Gen Z kids can't fight back. The movie is actually more self aware then I think people give it credit for, remember the contractor fought back.
@@micahjohnsonboxing6409 The main problem with that movie, aside from its shameless cashing in on the success of _Halloween_ (2018) is that there's just nobody really to root for. It wants us to sympathize with both the influencers, at least, the main four or five, but it also wants you to sympathize with Leatherface somewhat.
Thus we have nobody to really want to see win at the end, and thus no investment in any of the characters.
I think this movie could really have benefited by having the Sawyers in it, at least then you'd have clear-cut villains to root against.
Like, after he loses his adopted mom, Leatherface runs away because he's scared of all these people who are trying to take his home away. Then he stumbles upon some place and finds some relative who heard stories about him. Then that relative pushes him back towards the saw. It is family, after all.
Like when Heather in 3D decides that rather than run away from Leatherface she'll get on a ferris wheel which will just take her back around to where she was a few minutes later so Leatherface just has to wait for it to bring her back down to kill.
There's a story that I think sums up why the original movie is still to this day effective: When James Furman, the Director of the British Board of Film Classification at the time, tried to cut the movie, he found that he couldn't - all the most horrendous violence takes place offscreen, making the film seem far more disturbing and scary than if they just showed all the gore. They use the atmosphere and acting to cover for the outright gore and it's so much more effective than watching 20+ people being murdered imo.
Unpopular opinion, I actually liked the 2003 remake and especially the 2006 prequel that came after. Other than that, 1 and 2 are obviously the best. But I also think the 3rd movie is underrated
I swear I will never understand how TCM 3 is "bad" by any means. I see it in a lot of videos listed as a BAD SEQUEL but its actually FINE and enjoyable. Nothing crazy, just straight down the line slasher stuff. Doesnt go out of it's way to explain anything, but I actually like how it just stays pretty simple. The cast is great, movie is entertaining and enjoyable. Compared to most of the garbage after, like this new shit heap, it's a masterpiece. Just a pretty simple slasher movie. Considering how STUPID convoluted and ridiculous some of the more recent movies have been, going out of their way to explain everything ever and give everything an origin, etc, I appreciate how 3 just doesn't bother and tosses some chatacters into the woods with leatherface and a new family. Simple.

Like the first time you cut to the guy negotiating, I thought it was kinda funny, but when it came around the 3rd and 4th time I literally pissed myself. Same with the “get the fuck out of here” clip where she throws the keys, it was funny at first but the way it goes along with your script when you use it is genius. 10/10 man, you should be doing bigger numbers
I really appreciate the use of Monster Chiller Horror Theater from SCTV. John Candy and Eugene Levy were so wonderful together, and I absolutely adored those skits as a kid growing up.

Another shame is that their is already another Texas Chainsaw Massacre film that was shot and then never released, called All American Massacre, featuring Bill Mosely as Chop Top.
I think a thing that nearly all the sequels get wrong that really messes with the story, is the fact they never get Leatherfaces character correctly.

Considering how all over the place this series is, I like to consider “Nothing but Trouble” a part of the TCCU (Texas Chainsaw Cinematic Universe)
When the new Netflix TCM came out I checked out the hashtag that was trending for it and I saw near unanimous praise for it which got me thinking that I misjudged the early PR for it. That got me by surprise because I feel like I've become very good at making judgments based on marketing material as far as the quality of the end product goes. Must have been just bought impressions or twitter crowd being as nuts as twitter tends to be, a learning moment for me that's for sure.

I love the sequel with Dennis Hopper. I think part of what made the first one so scary is we did think it was based on a true story, kind of like the found footage movies in modern times. There was no internet. The movie just showed up and you either saw it or you didn't. I saw #2 in the theater.

I just stumbled across your video, and you and so many of the comments have got it right; the original had so much subtext, intentionally and accidentally, that can be read into it. Also Leatherface is not superhuman; in many respects, he is as much a victim of his deranged family as the people he carves up. They, didn't hunt victims in the original; you can probably argue that if they hadn't gone in their house, their only contact with the family would have been the desecrated corpses at the cemetery.

The first one was hilarious. People tend to overlook how comedic the family is. Yes, it's meant to be gross, but it is wonderfully campy as well and no one seemed to pick up on it

I picked up on the humor in the first one. First time I saw it, I especially LOLed in the last scene with Leatherface stumbling around in the street with his trusty chainsaw!
The mask analogy was perfect.
This was a really good video. I didn't like this movie at all being part of the franchise. It works on its own and the horror elements are good, but not for the franchise. Especially when they did one already like you said. And somehow, this one makes the 3D one look amazing!
Unfortunately in Hollywood, when one movie does well, they milk the series until it’s unwatchable.
The 2022 film got Leatherface’s character all wrong. Not only is he the main villain, but he’s the only villain. In the original film and the sequels, he’s not the real villain, it’s his family. Leatherface isn’t evil, he’s mentally handicapped and he kills because he doesn’t know any better and because his family tells him to, not for revenge or anything. For a film that’s trying to be a direct sequel to the original, it seems to completely not understand the original.
Has there ever been another series where every film felt like a course correction for the last one?

@Kelltron yeah, it's like the whole point of the movie was only to give use highly unlikable characters so see them all die in a very satisfactory way lol.
On the topic of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, I wanna mention there's an interesting review by Kim Newman regarding TCM 2 who stated that it appears to be directed by somebody who not only didn't make The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but didn't actually see it.
This is the sort of film introspection I aspired to achieve, I have however done none at all .this is how to make a documentary and you have done this series a service...what a wonderful presentation .well done .
Part 2 is without a doubt my favorite sequel. At least its a continuation unlike the others
The original is one of my favorite movies ever made . Yet I agree about the sequel just because it went in such a different and crazy direction . Also it's down right hilarious.

I feel like if the sequels post TCM 2 stuck more with the social commentary and themes of how corrupt the American dream can be instead of just focusing on the kills and the shock value maybe they'd be assessed a lot better.
EDIT: I noticed in the first two films that Leatherface, aka Bubba Sawyer, was more acting on the orders of his brothers than anything else - especially from Drayton Sawyer. It's ironic that they struggle with mental illness yet bully and abuse him for having the same. I'm pretty sure the older brothers, especially Drayton, have a strong case of internalized ableism and intergenerational trauma.
With how much they revere Grandpa, who is basically a mummy, it's probably a safe bet that there's some generational abuse and trauma in how Drayton controls his brothers and takes out his frustrations on them.
@@christopherwall2121 Grandpa started it all so probably. It was him quitting his job at the slaughterhouse because he didn't like the new machines they used to kill the animals and preferred his hammer and the rest of them being fired later on because less workers were needed that started everything off.
The 2003 Texas and it's prequel were amazing. Shame they hadn't continued in same vein.

This might be a hot take but I actually liked the 2003 remake but then again it was the first movie in the franchise I had seen and I was a teenager. It was scary and I enjoyed R. Lee Ermy's performance. I haven't rewatched it so maybe it doesn't hold up but compared to other movies in the franchise It's fine and did it's job as a horror movie. I don't get why it has so many bad reviews, It's gold compared to this new film.

Can some one enlighten me as to why the original of this franchise is so revered? My brother and I finally sat down and watched it either last year or in 2020 and I just don't get it. I've been a horror fan for about 20 years and I've watched a large amount of films from a variety of eras. Even though most older horror films don't especially frighten me it's usually easy to see why they might have frightened audiences of the day and why they're important to the genre. This was just a boring, incoherent mess. Leatherface and his family were definitely creepy, as was the reveal about their meat supply, but the rest of the movie was just painfully dull. I also dearly wish that they'd killed the last girl and that they'd done it very, very early in the film. I normally always feel for the victims as is usually intended but after a certain point the only two sound elements in the movie were some form of communication between the family or the last girl screaming endlessly. The former at least added some flavor to the movie but her screaming just got so obnoxious so quickly. I get that that's what an average, real human being would do if they were to find themselves in such a bizarre and dreadful situation, but this is a fucking movie. There's no reason to spend an hour listening to somebody scream while adding almost zero substance or story progression or, really, fucking ANYTHING to balance it out.
I like that you've been venturing into horror man. Your channel is so damn good
