    Grade school arithmetic:
Cheap because it’s a very dilute, 0.8% solution of soapy water. (Soap is the only surfactant and cleaning agent. Mainstream detergents are 15% surfactants.)
5.5 oz of soap dissolved in 5 gal of water washes 160 loads when dosed at 1/2 cup/load. 1/2 cup delivers 0.034 oz of soap/load. A $ bill weighs 0.035 oz.

Thank you for the education. Only thing I can inform is this heavily diluted detergent does a fine job cleaning clothes. I guess an alternative would be to dilute the mainstream stuff... might possibly be more concentrated than necessary.

Cleaning effectiveness depends on time, temperature, agitation, and concentration of cleaning ingredients. Whether or not you believe it, science is always right.

      this time it'll work
I’d been traveling, using a body wash/shampoo to hand wash clothes. Worked fine, but a nylon shirt developed perspiration stains...the outside is printed, the inside is white. After I returned, I soaked it overnight in a warm, concentrated solution of a powdered detergent from $Tree. The stains on the white inside disappeared! I didn’t see enzymes or an oxygen bleach listed in the ingredients, but it worked great nevertheless, exceeding my expectations for a $ store product.

@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt so what you're saying is... you had a higher than daily use absorbed stain so you had to use a higher concentration cleaner to remedy it. Math checks out.

In this case,, time, concentration and type of cleaning agents were applicable. The shirt was already clean. A small stain on the outside wasn’t affected by the soak.
The $Tree product contains something that reacted with the stain, rather than emulsifying it, as surfactants do. Stains are visible because of chemical structures which can be exploited with the right chemistry to make them invisible, even though they may still adhere to fabrics. Next time I buy a box I’ll check to see if I missed something in the ingredients.
