Hi Kate 👋🏾 I hope you're well. Good job on the crotchet pieces that you did. You mentioned working on a blanket, as a beginner I would recommend you start with a basic granny square blanket. Its stitches are repetitive (double crotchet) and you get to watch the square grow in the blanket size that you want. You can add as many yarn colours as you wish, get creative with it and the beauty of it is that you'll have neat straight edges.
