IU is simply unique. As another commenter mentioned - have a look at Hyori Homestay to see her true personality. It's kind of heartbreaking in a way how humble and selfless she is...even at a time (2017) when she was arguably at the peak of her popularity. You would never know she was a major celebrity. She is so well grounded as a person. The agency she signed with was not a major one (they were nearly bankrupt) - and IU essentially recovered that company...and has stayed with them (they created a new company, EDAM, for her - with her first manager as the CEO). You can see her freedom to control her image and music (whatever genres she feels like), etc...and that isn't typically the case with other artists. But she's not typical either.
She is definitely really unique and refreshing! Plus so talented. 😊❤
In Korea, IU is the number one singer in cumulative streaming and downloads on domestic music sites, including both groups and solos. She ranked 2nd five times and 3rd once once in the Koreans' Most Favorite Celebrity Survey every year from 2018 to 2023. (She was pushed to 3rd place.
That year, BTS took second place.)
I think it's great that she's been at the top for 16 years in the Kpop market, where trends change rapidly.
She said at a concert this year that her goal is to be a singer on stage by the time she's 70.
I sincerely hope that she will remain a beloved singer for a long, long time.

The bears are so cute, if we had one that'll be awesome, but I don't have ideas for it. Love dandy tho. Btw, actually i got into IU because of her lyrics and she is just a genius for that. I was actually a boygroup fan, just because they look cool. After some time getting into IU, i found myself smiling to everything she does. one time I saw myself in a big mirror beside me, me smiling and it's a long time since forever, I realized how beautiful I am. My insecurities were gone, I can pick myself up, I can make myself happy from little things, things can go wrong, but I can find a new path with some positivity. She was my comfort, and I just want to be like her, as a human. With her cuteness, funniness and coolness at a different level. She always has something to talk about and to show to us that can be a heart opener.

Few facts about IU:-
1. Except during and for acting and sometimes for performance, it's difficult to see IU cry publicly. There's one interview, when this is being pointed out when at that moment, IU did cry after seeing one of her fellow artist finally debut.
2. IU take care of her team/staff very well and many stayed with her for long. In fact, in one of her earlier contract renewal negotiation, IU stated that her one condition for her contract renewal is that all her staff will stay and get a raise
3. As shown in the documentary, IU was shouted off the stage during her debut, and some audience in factr called her pig (IU was chubbier when she was younger). During one of her first chart winning performance, fans (mostly girls) of boy groups were shouting for her to be off stage, as they were eagerly waiting for their idols to perform. Only one fan shouted loud enough to cheer IU, and from that moment IU's goal is to make her fan(s) happy. That one fan has been a true Uaena ever since.
4. IU is an award winning singer, actress, songwriter and lyricist. In fact, I first knew IU when I watched one of the best k-drama of all time, the underrated "My Mister". Her performance in that drama is mindblowing. Watch it...it's really a great drama and her acting is superb.
5. IU always championed for mental health among the artists. Reason being 3 of her famous friends commit suicide, 2 i believe in the same year, and IU got to know about the death of one of those friends, while performing at her concert. This is captured in the documentary. Fans believe the song "Eight" was produced in memory of her 3 friends. P/s: her co-star in "My Mister" also commited suicide recently.

I agree with Loo. IU is a light for a lot of her fans. I have heard her greatness years ago but I just became a really big fan last year and it was such good timing too because I was always stressed out and anxious every day at that time but when I started to listen to her music and watched her videos, it gave back my strength and joy. And I started to be more optimistic and believe that I can always get through a bad day bcoz of her. She is a saviour to a lot of people. ❤

I found her through a drama hotel del luna. At first i was like what a pretty and cute girl... Few episodes later i came to know how good actress she is. Few days later i saw a UA-cam shorts of her live performing through the night. Since then she is my favourite singer. Everday i feel I love her a little more than yesterday. She is my favourite celebrity in the whole world.
P.s. i liked loo's character more in previous videos but now i feel i gradually falling for lean's personality 😂😂. You both are a perfectly balanced duo as sassy and soft girls.

Unlike other reactors, it's nice to see you guys having deep conversations and enjoying it through IU. Maybe it's because you're writers. Since the age of 23, IU has written almost her own song lyrics, lyrics are very poetic and contain good metaphors. I'm glad that I met people who can recognize it. Most of IU's songs have relatively less explosive rhythms or melodies like other idol songs. But if you listen to it for a long time, it's comfortable and addictive. And once you get to know the lyrics and the background of the song, you fall in love even more. I hope you can have a richer and more enjoyable life through IU, just like I did. thank you for the IU content. This documentary starts off with her showing resilience as a young singer. What it skips over is why she is so resilient. She was living separately from her parents for years (financial troubles), living with her grandmother and relatives...attending 3 different middle schools, and she was happy to basically live at the company training studio and have access to food and a place to sleep. That makes you pretty tough - and also very loyal to everyone around her. Her IU Team is recognized essentially as an extended family. I'd suggest watching IU TV episodes. You get to know those around her, and they are so precious not only to IU but to her fans...as they have been such an important support system for her. Other good documentaries include:

It's impossible to choose some but "Killing voice of IU" would be a good introduction of her 20's, and songs like Autumn morning, Eight, Hold my hand, Meaning of you, Friday, Twenty three, Palette, Through the night, Lilac, are in there, and songs like Celebrity, Coin, Love poem, Blueming, Epilogue, have MV, and songs like Havana, My sea, Rain drop, The shower, Heart, Knees can be found in various concert, and songs like Good day, You and I, the red shoes are more earlier songs and various stage versions. Any would be a good choice.

I wish more videos about Ji-eun would focus on her background, because her young life was a real struggle and she suffered in poverty for a long time before she became IU. I think there are some short videos that talk about it, but it would be great if there were a more comprehensive overview of her.

If information about IU's struggle with Patulous Eustachian Tube affecting her singing could be added, it would make it even more comprehensive.

I really changed a lot when i started supporting her, i became more humble and a lot more kinder because of her.. she.. really inspires me a lot. Her songs too are so good and the messages behind those lyrics can be touching, healing, sad, can have a lesson, or you can relate to it.. And.. What does Uaena mean?
‘You’(U) is from English, ‘ae’(愛) is Sino-Korean for ’love‘, and ‘na’(나) is Korean for ‘me’. IU’s official Daum fancafe used to be called ‘U愛나 Fancafe’ and over time, IU’s fans were called ‘Uaena’. Eventually, IU’s official fanclub started recruiting in 2017 and is also called ‘UAENA’.
Why are IU fans also called biscuits or star candies?
IU said on her fancafe that male fans are 건빵 (geonbbang or biscuits) because that’s her favourite snack and female fans are 별사탕 (byeolsatang or star candy) because IU used to have very few female fans, just like the rare star candies you would find in a pack of biscuits. Also, antis are milk.
What else does IU call uaena?
IU has also called uaena 제비꽃 or ‘violet flowers’ as her fans are quiet, but always there for her. She used the message, ‘Violet flowers, I’m always on your side’ for her first soundwave (couple) ring with uaena and also used the violet flower logo on one side of her custom in-ear monitors (the other side is the uaena logo).

She is the singer with the most perfect gender ratio! It was so beautiful to see the fans, divided by men and women, singing at the concert hall.

Yes that was RM at 39:50 🙂 BTS were doing interviews in the U.S. and they asked each member what is the first album they bought. Jungkook replied “Do you know IU?” because that was his first album and he’s also a Uaena. RM then clarified to the interviewer who IU was.

It’s hard to find a documentary of IU depicting her past cuz she hasn’t really disclosed her childhood struggles much in interviews. I’ve personally never seen her talk about it, other than one on YT of a man narrating her life of poverty, but don’t know about its accuracy.

For what it's worth, the booing incident was not an adult, it was a young girl (probably teenager) who was there to cheer on a guy singer. Still, the booing was rude, and if that girl's parents heard about it, maybe they would question whether she should be allowed to attend another performance very soon. But I don't know. . . .

Tomboy is a very commonplace and well-used word in our culture. It's not negative at all. I am sorry that it is negative in your culture, but the beauty of language is that we all translate it differently depending on where we grow up. I am a tomboy (lean), always have been, and am proud of that fact. It's a part of my identity. A Tomboy in my culture is a girl who is not afraid of hard work, getting physical or standing up for herself. Tomboys are girls who don;t let gender hold them down and challenge stereotypes.
