- Twenty years after the liberation from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Africa's youngest nation, has emerged as strategically vital to the stability of the region and the wider global agenda.
Eritrea is struggling to balance the needs of its people with the perceived threats to the nation.
Al Jazeera's Jane Dutton conducts a rare interview with Isaisas Afewerki, the president of Eritrea.
Al Jazeera confronted him with the allegations about Eritrea's ties with Iran, Hamas, al Shabab in Somalia and rebel groups in Sudan and Houthis in Yemen.
"This is a deliberate distortion of facts, where is the evidence, these are fabrications, where is your evidence?", he said.
"How possibly could one blame Eritrea for sympathising or supporting one group over another in Somalia we have never done that." he said.
When asked about Eritrea's relation with Ethiopia today and the border dispute he said: "This border issue war was a senseless conflict instigated by the US.
"It is a cover up for the failures of the misguided policies of the United States in the horn of Africa for the last 20 years.
"It is not a problem with Ethiopia we have worked with these people for almost two decades to remove a government in Ethiopia, and we want to see a relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia based on mutual respect and common interest," he said.
"There is no presence for Iran in this region, Eritrea is not for sale, not for Iran, Israel, the United States or anybody," he said.

No. The western media portrayed ወዲ ኣፎም as a dictator, but that is only a stereo type and a form of demonisation, and they essentially misrepresent the Eritrean system all together, since it is a different form of democracy then most countries in the west.
Eritrea had a form of democracy with peoples committees at the basis, and not political parties. Eritrea is a tribal society, and a party system simply does not work in a tribal society like Eritrea

The Eritrean constitution is built on the recognition of a multi-party democracy. There are indeed articles that mention the charactristics of the acceptable parties to avoid discrimination based on ethnicity or religion.

I respect President Isayas. It's not beneficial to antagonize him. He is old fashioned individual. He doesn't want be contradicted. I understand he should be asked as a leader, but the questions should be with respect. He should be left alone. He has deep commitment on his cause. To change his perspective, approach him with respect. He has done his part. He deserves respect and constructive engagement. Trust me! Western approach won't work on him. Besides, he is practical person. He has experience that can benefit the region. Treat him with respect. Don't ever antagonize him. He is a good person. He has unwavering commitment what he believes. Respect that approach him as a dignified leader not as a trouble maker and insensitive to his people. This is one of the biggest problems in the world that miscommunication. You must approach individuals on their psyche. I have right to ask any way I want kind doesn't work for everybody. I am not saying that you don't have right to ask questions. I am saying that approach that is designed for an individual. Be sensitive. I respect your profession, but have courtesy.
