Its a hoist! The cages were dark in the mining era. They now have a light for visitor comfort. The buzzer is the only way to tell the hoistman whats going on. Its all designed to be as close to what it was in the mining era. I worked there for 20 years!

They us it as a way to communicate with the hoist operator at the surface. There are several different signals each having a defined meaning, like "bring the cage up".

It's a mining elevator from the early 1900s, not intended for comfort and convenience, just a way to get miners and equipment in and out of the mine. Miners carried their own lamps, plus the miners didn't need lights once they were on the elevator. MnDNR has left the mine pretty much the way it was when the mine property was transferred to State ownership in 1963.
