whoever uploaded this is obviously a hero
Correct
Exactly this
Undoubtedly
Agreed.
Yup
I truly loved watching the drummer live - impressive jazz background , playing with such a class .
This vid is some kind of magic gift. Big ups for having this thing and putting it up on YT. Thank you friend. : )
Listened to Soul Coughing for years. Can't believe I've never watched a live performance before. Beautiful. Such dynamics on stage!
Live concerts are extremely rare. Thank you!
I can’t believe I found this, such great memories. Whomever recorded this was obvs in love which makes it all the much sweeter. Lazy bones encore let’s go!
Thanks for putting this up. I remember a show at Irving Plaza just before the breakup. I was up on the second floor looking down at 700 people singing every lyric in unison with Mike. When they split, I was mental.
What’s funny is, I’ve been a huge MD fan for many years, and I play his songs regularly as well as Soul Coughing songs. I am a big word nerd and am STILL always discovering new exact lyrics after way over a decade! ;)
Sharing a 20 year old mix tape with my 21 year old daughter tonight. Saint Louis is Listening was a highlighted track. Had me wondering if I could mine some Soul Coughing gold on UA-cam. Then this! Thanks for uploading this!
ALBUM?!?!?! They have THREE that are all outstanding.
This is a gem!
I was only 3 years old and living one state away from where this concert took place in November 1996. But I saw Mike and his incredible band play Ruby Vroom in its entirety last fall, so I suppose that's the closest to seeing Soul Coughing as I'll ever get.
They really need to do a proper reunion
Look at all these people .. enjoying, listening to MUSIC. Without phones
cringe
holy shit. this is probably the best performance of anything ive ever seen in my life.
Back again in 2023! Omg. I could watch Mike everyday/all day performing those songs. Man…the way he smoked the cig performing bitterness…so so HOT! The way he looked at that mic performing idiot kings…and white girl…major crush on him. UGH 😍🔥
This never get's old.
on tour now. love how they mix. saw them once in Maryland in late 90s. need one more dose
fantastic. a brilliant, melodic, aggressive and beautiful display of musical creativity.
I saw Soul Coughing 5 times back then during this time - but the first show - I think a few months before this show was just a completely insane time. It was the Odeon in Cleveland. Failure opened the show. We were right up front just getting crushed by the crowd. We didn't know any of the songs, but man what a time.
Thank you so much for uploading this!! Also thanks Tazzi Zieni for the full set list!
wish i could time travel back to this show
Cool! I went to this show!
Thanks for the upload! It was great to hear an early version of an El Oso song on here, as well as some other great tunes.
Well they had to play Houston in Houston
Damn this was tight, I wish they had Geggy Tah's performance during this too.
do you know if there's any live footage or live recordings of Geggy Tah?
Thank you so much for uploading this! I've been waiting forever to see some of these songs live.
Oh man, this is SO good!
How did I miss this show?!? I was a freshman at UH during this time! I wish I could go back in time and attend this show.....
Holy shit! 20 years later and he's touring with that guitar again.
xdarnokx true story!!
Saw him last night in Portland, OR. Same guitar, same amazing results. A solid hour and a half of smooth grooves and wicked af sounds/tones.
Thanks man
Peace and love from Bristol, England
Ruby Vroom soul coughing one my fave cds ...
No surprise A Tribe Called Quest inspired this stuff. Big up Doughty
Pure Gold
Brian Peak. you steal my heart.
thank you!
Saw them at the Euclid Tavern. 🤯
He performed the song "Houston" in..... Houston!
Russell Solomon at the time, the song was called “don’t go wreck the car”.
I think it's pretty obvious after all these years that nobody is at fault when it comes to this band. Mike had a vision and a sound and could figure it out with these guys, and they new he was the only way to move beyond the basic things they were doing at the time. They all needed each other and it worked .. then THEY each and every one of them fucked it up; it happens every single day with bands. It's just sad it happened with such a unique sound and power. In my opinion? They all suck ... Fuck the ego, go for the sound......
Damn, I wish I had seen them, but will look to see Mike!!!
fuck they were good together...
I got bones beneath my skin mister
There's a skeleton in every man's house
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody
There's a dead man trying to get out
excellent!
god how great this shit keeps popping up
Cool!!!
58:36 tho 🎉❤
This show is so fucking good.
It's just music 🎶
Talk about a trend setter....It took hipsters like 10 years to get those glasses.
uh boom bip ... and a wakeup
I love how the dude on camera filmed the hot chicks in the crowd. An incredible performance by SC!
Look at mike all cool n shit. I could never see him doin this now. Its almost like he became just like his bandmates that hated him
Man, Duoghty was high as shit on this!!! I still love them all ... so orginal ....
If I had been there would I have been able to tell he was high any better than watching it on UA-cam? No, I know because it is outlined in his book. Try reading; it forces you to think while your mouth is closed instead of the other way around.
I saw them 4 times in 4 years - and he didnt seem to be High most of the time - He managed each gig perfectly well . We grooved like there was no tomorrow .....In Belgium , they were huge and very appreciated . Mike even did speak a few words in Dutch to tease the Belgian dutch fans ....they loved his sheer genius on stage and sense of unique fun .
Early version of Houston in there
If only super bon bon was in there, would've been perfect
Ah yes, Mike Doughty and the Expendables, as according to whoever filmed this.
32:16 water? Sprite?
Back when “Houston” was called “Don’t go wreck the car”.
We are all in some way or another going to Reseda, someday, to die...
All these pre-9/11 people....
Yuvals form is a little different but damn he’s so good.
fuck my life, seriously, who the fuck had this footage
+Gary K for this many years without releasing it
I have a 2 hour long DVD of SC live in Minneapolis 1997. Video Quality: B (VHS camcorder from the soundboard) Sound quality: A+, soundboard to external DAT, paired with VHS footage.
No idea how to upload it though, sorry for holdin' out on you :(
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE IT IN SOME FORM!!!!!! Maybe in vimeo or something. I would be very happy.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE IT IN SOME FORM!!!!!! Maybe in vimeo or something. I would be very happy.
Joonas Lehtola i'll try my best. i'm a busy busy guy so i'll see what can be done!
You can tell Mike has drugs in his system during this.
Nate Hawkins For instance, in Disseminated he says I like Dirvan then Jason. Mixed up the names and it still worked.
Care to explain that assertion? Seems to me he's pretty sober...might not be happy about it, but he doesn't seem f'd up in any way here.
I have lo

You're a good person Bones...
What does not come across here is how amazing the bass sounded at these shows. Mike and Mark come across at face value but the rhythm section sounded so good in these small shows. Thats what struck me at the time. Rock solid. Such a unique sound, greater than the sum of the parts.
ehlava - nailed it. The rhythm section in their prime was an absolute force.
Could not agree more.
Twenty years and there's rarely been an album as fresh and innovative since.
Music has gotten progressively more simplistic and tedious. The constant use of auto tune and drum synchronization has sucked all the feel and need for actual talent out of the music, allowing a parade of “sexy” pop stars with marginal talent at best whose songs are typically penned by someone else. Check out Rick Beato’s channel. He analyzes music from the early 2000’s and before, highlighting what made music great before it was hijacked by algorithms and lazy no-talent production. I sense there are many talented Gen Z musicians that are hungry for a return to talent and inspiration based music. I sure hope so. Also troubled times often produce truly excellent music and we certainly have a lot of trouble brewing these days
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 gen z is already making great music, it's just never going to make it to the mainstream.
@@ash_aiden 99% of the 'alternative' music I've been turned on to by Gen Z people sounds whiny and emo. I guess it's just not to my taste.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 youtu.be/qS6ne3lx1 what about this?

Saw them twice. My favorites. God, I used to study Yuval’s drumming; so tight and creative. He and Sebastian were just locked. I miss them so much.
I've been trying to play along to Soundtrack to Mary on drums lately. I'm no where near that level of playing along to it but I just love that beat a ton. So dang fun.
We are all Yuval Gabay.
Yuval is a groove machine. Nothing flashy on the surface but if closely examined a lot of nuance is revealed in his playing
theyre back!!!
such a shame none of them liked each other, soul coughing was awesome.
e: ALRIGHT YALL, i get it. I should have rephrased it, m. doughty is indeed an asshole and thats something we can I agree on, it was simply the wrong way to phrase it, i was probably high or something when I wrote it.
Anyways it was never really the lyrics or any of that shit that made them stand out to me, it was unique instrumentation and more specifically the sampling that made the tracks sound more loose and broken. I first found out about them when i was like 11 or 12, I lived in alaska at the time so my sleep schedule was all sorts of fucked up because if you hadn't learned anything its that in the summer time the sun is up for 24 hours. I remember wasking up one night at like 2 am thinking it was 10 am and turned on cartoon network and they were running their "groovies" animated music video thing, "rolling" came on and i just remember not being able to wrap my head around any of it because it was unlike anything I heard at the time, and that really made it stand out. I also wasn't listening to any electronic music or anything at the time, i think i had just figured out who primus were so I was kinda already drawn to more fucked up sounding music, even more because it was electronic sounding but it was all being done with typical instruments.
Its really unfortunate the hate he has for the material, its some groundbreaking shit whether he wants to live with that fact or not. But he IS playing soul coughing material again with a new band, so who knows? anything is possible but I would love a chance to see one of my favorite bands in whatever capacity it hopefully happens in, some day. His solo stuff is really fucking boring.
+Iggy Tubmen Its a shame M Doughty was a huge asshole and the rest of the band just wanted some credit for their musical contributions.
I read Doughty's autobiography and ended up hating him by the end. He's a pretentious prick.
+Dustin Winter all correct and yet here we are jamming to this music haha it's good stuff.
The other members get along, and have collaborated post-Soul Coughing but they're all practically estranged from Mike Doughty.
+Dustin Winter What upsets me most about the situation is how offensively obtuse Mike comes off sounding when he accuses his bandmates of sabotaging their success and claims songwriting is solely by his design.
Yes, the lyrics may be of his design but that doesn't make really mean he is the "songwriter". Most rock and pop albums also assign songwriting credit to the people who create the main composition of the record; melody and chord progression.
Mike even admits in several interviews that a lot of their songs were born from jam sessions, where the members engage in interplay with their respective instruments until a cohesive sound is found.
I can give Mike credit for writing the song's lyrics, but I highly doubt he was the source of the bassline, percussion, keys, and interesting sampling that makes up the musical backbone of their albums.
In my opinion, Mike had a huge ego boost when their first album dropped and he let it get to his head. Add the fact that he is admitted being hooked on heroin and other drugs during this time, and you can see how his attitude and judgement became out of control.
I'm glad he's clean and happy doing his thing, but he's bitter as fuck because he couldn't have his way....
Completely agreed, SC was a sloid band in every way and lyrics definitely weren't what made the band stood out. Pull the guitar and singing out and you still have great compositions
What I mean is that by wanting to have most of the credit Mike became an asshole
It reminds me a situation with first Jane's Addiction album ,after they recorded it the singer demanded to have 50% of all money earned from it, if not he would not allow the album to be released. And he had definitely the least impact on the direction of the band and the sound.
Being in a band is a collaborative effort, everyone throws something in (unless they really don't) and anyone who claims to have done more than other members is a prick
This show jammed entirely beat wise. They went so improv on some songs. Glad they put on such a show for my hometown.
Saw them multiple times around 94-98 , even performing in summer festivals so well . Always has been a must See that anybody wanted to attend . The humor was great , the groove was insane , we danced like there was no tomorrow .....Great days
Pasadena - and I would add that in my experience, the audience was 60% women, all cool as hell lookin and gorgeous in that Brooklyn sort of way. So glad I got to see them live.
I got to see them in 1997 at the Horde Festival in Massachusetts.
Mr. Bitterness! Holy Shit Yuval Gabay!
He is an unbelievable drummer ......one of a kind !!
Almost 20 years to the day... wish I got to see them live but Mike's solo performances are awesome too.
He is doing live ruby vroom now
Upon the new tour announcement went looking for this. I'm looking forward to hear Doughty discuss how this came about after the prior bad blood.
Never thought to look up a live performance, but I've been listening to them since about 2002. Thanks for the upload!
Saw them in Providence about a month after this show at the WBRU Holiday Bash with Superdrag, Fountains of Wayne and the Lemonheads.
Means the world to me that you uploaded this! Thanks!
HOLY SHIT--- thankyouuuuuuu
and what an incredible setlist!!!
This band shouldn't have broken up. Incredible, original, and artful. We only got a few albums out of them, we should have gotten 10.
Mike saved himself from certain heroin OD by leaving the band/limelight. His solo stuff is great music still.
Discovered this band by accident on a small stage at a Lollapalooza in New Orleans mid-90s. They've blown me away ever since
I saw these guys 3 times. Once for each studio album. One of my "desert island" bands. Thank you so much for posting this.
I saw them two days in a row and each show was completely different from the other.
I accidently discovered them at the Knitting Factory in the beginning of my NYC internship 1993 and joined all their 10 concerts during my half year there. Loved it sooo much. Mark Degli Antoni gave me a demo tape with the most intense version of Screenwriter's Blues, my most favourite SC track. So sad they split up. Best live band I ever saw.
Damn is the demo tape online?
I put this on whilst bakin' chicken in Kazakhstan! Got me groovin' and movin' and wishin' for a time machine.
а ты из казахстана? )))
Я живу в Атырау, Казахстан. Я Американец.
These guys were so far ahead of their time and perfect here. Circles (from El Oso) hadn't even broken yet.
Thank you for sharing this! Loved these guys in high school, some great music here!

All white rappers from
MPLS owe this band a huge favor
that voice should not come out of that body. top 10 bands of the 90s.
I was 12 when this happened in my city. I wish I had been old enough to see this
white grrrrl
Amazing jewel here on UA-cam! Used to see these guys in the 90s and sadly the iPhone had not been invented. Or maybe better it hadn’t been invented yet?
The reunion tour will be epic in 2018! (you heard it here first folks!)
Mike has seemed to soften his biterness toward his former bandmates within the last year a great deal actually, judging from a few facebook posts and an interview recently where he implied that a reunion wouldn't be out of the question but "would be unprofitable" in his opinion.
For real? That would be awesome!
Adam Baker yeh, which is why I don't listen to his versions of these great songs
Sunny Day Real Estate also played this night? My god I wish I was there.
Pennsylvania History Buff ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️I wish the same but I wasn’t even born yett lmao! Love love SDRE
I was there with my roommate.
Saw 'em live twice-once opening for They Might Be Giants and once as headliners (with Firewater as support…helluva bill, that). As great as the band and the songs were, neither time did Doughty seem like he was very happy to be doing it.
It's sad to hear the situation was so miserable for the guy 'cause those 3 albums are still among my favorites to this day. I wish I could be more into his solo work since then.
You are so lucky. I would give anything to see them live.
Now that he is no longer on heroin maybe they will do some reunion dates
Guess whose back? :-)
I think if soul Coughing ever opened for Primus and I was there my heart and brain would explode, and I'd be happy to be dead
BRILLIANT MUSICIANS
MIKE IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE LYRICIST
Mike is so underrated dude…I don’t understand this music industry at all…seriously, soul coughing could have been bigger than Red Hot Chili Peppers! And they are one of my favorite bands but if I had to choose, I’d probably choose soul coughing music. They were soooo ahead of their time. I’ve heard all of their albums and heard music that sounds like today, even some songs that sounded like kid cudi. Pensacola track was one of them.
The idiot kings…sooo amazing…I mean. Have you heard ghost of vroom 3? It’s so awesome. It’s like a futuristic version of soul coughing no lie! I’m seeing them in LA next year. That’s the closest to soul coughing you’d ever get. Plus, Mike wrote all the songs for soul coughing so…the other guys are talented but tbh, Mike played a HUGE part of that band. Hate that they were so intimidated by him. I heard bc he was younger than them. But while reading his wiki, he formed soul coughing, so technically, it was his band….people are weird man. I think if they would’ve listened to Mike’s ideas, they would’ve been way bigger but coming from Mike, they never wanted to listen to any of his ideas….🙄 I mean, obviously, he was and still is a musical genius.
I'm floored that I stumbled across this! I lived in Fort Worth, and although they were playing two days later in Dallas, I couldn't make that show. So Friday after classes, I drove down from Fort Worth, picked up my buddy at UT in Austin, and made it to Houston right about the time SC was going on stage, and then drove back to Fort Worth after the show. Saw them again in Dallas in '99, not long before they called it quits.
He's so young here even though bald. For some reason he reminds me of Buddy Holly
he's not bald bruh! just very fine hair
Thank you for posting this video! I've been searching youtube every day for years looking for Soul Coughing live videos.
