In this video, I detail the process of cleaning sea shells using muriatic acid. I find this to be the best method of cleaning dirty or weathered shells, as no other method can restore color and luster in such a way as the acid! I hope you find this video at all helpful, and there will be more to come very soon!
ALWAYS BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL AND SAFE WHEN WORKING WITH MATERIALS LIKE CORROSIVE ACIDS!!!!!

Appreciate your comment about determining the quality of shell condition first before deciding to use muratic acid. Love the tulip shell what a great find!

Remarkably helpful and detailed. We just got back from Marco Island and post hurricane shelling was great. Most of our shells are clean, but I definitely have some shells that will benefit from this process. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video!

For a lot of shell like that, use a big flat sieve with handles that you can load up with shells. Sit them down in the acid bath for several seconds then into the rinse water. Sounds a lot easier than doing them one at a time. What is your opinion?

Thank you for uploading! I have some wavy turban shells at home that are covered in whatever comes from the ocean. No one's been able to tell me what to use to clean them. I'm definitely going to try muriatic acid when i get home!

Thanks for the info. I have shells I gathered on Okinawa in the mid 50s that will benefit from this treatment.

After the acid bath, do the shells stay that bright or do you put any mineral oil to enhance the shine?

Thx for this video Theo. Your shells came out beautiful! I want to try this with the shells I got on Oregon coast that are so thick with calcium, I just don't know how to dispose of the acid.

Ihave used cleaning vinegar/ It is 10% acid as opposed to household vinegar Which is 5% acid. and a little less aggressive then HCA. It works very well for me. You can get it at a lot of Walmarts or sometimes Lowes. You might try it for shells. Havagudun.

Try using citric acid. I watched an Australian transform filthy stones with it. I’m going to use it on some of my agates soon. It’s a powder and you add it to water.

The holes in the shells are from predators eating the animal. How well would muriatic acid work for freshwater mussel shells? I have some that I want to shine for the mother of pearl.

Are any of the shells completely dry in the after shots? I have a hard time telling if they are more colorful just because they are wet or not.

Every shell is completely dry in the after shots! It's amazing how much color and luster comes back after the dip!

Theo Kellison I heard you can usually find them in mud. Is that where you found yours? I was at Kice Island a couple of days ago and was hoping to find some there but only found one good one.
