I searched for the wreckage back in the early 2000's after getting a rough grid reference from an old bloke at Langford Lodge Aviation Museum. The mountain had been ablaze a few weeks previous, removing most of the bracken ,and I found a huge amount of wreckage as a result. I had bought a Garmin GPS just before so have a 10 figure grid somewhere written down somewhere, will try and dig it out for you. Great video Pal!
Hi Stephen, @@StephenJReid, had a dig around and found a grid I'd written down the day I hunted for the crash site, I found loads due to the recent hill fire. There is actually a whole radial engine still up there and I'm hoping that the grid I marked on my GPS is where it is located.Grid J 36807 25453. I'd got the grid square off the massive map they used to have at the Ulster Aviation Museum at Langford Lodge so it was a bit of a speculative search to say the least but was fruitful in the end due to all the bracken having been burnt back. The museum has since located to Long Kesh and now has an interactive map with all the crash sites in Northern Ireland and probably a few in Donegal to boot. Did you know that there are a few more up in the Mournes? A wellington bomber only a few hundred meters from the Ice House on the Glen River path (Grid J 363 293) and also a substantial pile of wreckage a few hundred meters from the bend in the wall on top of Commedagh (Grid J 343 286)- could possibly also be a Wellington, although may be confused with a Mosquito with crashed above The Castles north of the Brandy Pad. Hope this is of some use my friend, keep up the good work!
Nice wee video you made there, 11:00 is the propeller drive hub from the front of the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the part your touching is where one of the four blades went in. I have been at the crash sites of the two wellingtons and the Mosquito, there are others from world war 2 and more recently that have crashed in the Mournes that I haven't been at yet.
Ahh! Thanks for letting me know. I was at another crash site on Achill island last year, three engines on the mountainside. Seems to have happened a lot back then. Where are the wellingtons & mosquito?
@@StephenJReid Wellington Bomber X3599 is up behind the ice house near the black stairs and the Glen river, Wellington Bomber X9820 is about 150 feet from the top and on the west side of Commedagh, Mosquito NS996 is just above the castles on the south side of Commedagh, its probably the one with the most stuff lying about, you can see the undercarriage, the armour plate for behind the pilots seat and various other bits and pieces, i have been told there is a wheel from it somewhere in a stream below the brandy pad.
Fantastic video, will have to make a trip up and see it soon. I am enjoying the diversity of mournes content. I think it's easy to just go to donard, it's nice to see the alternatives out there. Thank you 😀
Class video Stephen, that intro was fantastic! I've just started playing about with making videos up the Mournes myself and your videos are really inspiring! Looking forward to seeing the Mourne Wall solo video!
That was a really good video. Great adventure!!! Especially when Lassie pops up. Thanks putting this together. I'm going to look up your headset, I've always wondered how they performed...
Great vid, too long since I've been up the Mournes. I need to get myself up there for a run. Managed to get up over Trostan this week, that was some crack. Took a few tumbles on the way down. Been eyeing up those Salomon shoes you did a vid on.
Lovely piece Stephen, a number of crash sites around the province. There’s a reasonably well preserved Corsair in the Foyle, although I understand the Canadian pilot walked away from that one.
Great video Stephen. I love the history and, as usual, your presentation. In East Anglia we have many old wartime airfields and I have made a couple of running/walking videos of the history of some of them. Don't think you will ever catch me out at night on a haunted hillside. Good luck.
There's a further 2 crash sites up at Commedagh & one near the Ice House on Donard - Fascinating program with Dr Gavin Hughes on Radio Ulster "Talkback" yesterday about them. Available on BBC sounds until 3rd November 2023
@@StephenJReid we used to do halloween runs. Once did a ghost pub run at night time. Running from pub to pub through the countryside wearing bedsheets!
Tryed to find tht myself gave up. Was great headin up train tracks tho after seeing the sunrise on sileve Muck. Great video wud love to walk the wall some time next year hopefully. I've never seen a good video of it wit way points and things would be a real hit 😉
I get other-side anxiety all the time 😂 did you see the memorial plaque near the summit of chimney rock? there’s also some more wreckage nearby between the rocks.
thanks for this posting.....my father flew B26s in WWII for US Army AirForce

Lassie scared the wits out of me initially! 😂 those are AfterShokz Areopex, pricey but work really well and keep your ears free to hear around you
Hi Stephen,I really envy your beautiful walks in the Mourne mountains.
Thank you! 🙂
Stephen says "Looks like a death trap." Stephen steps on said death trap. Great video!
Gotta test my claims! 😂

Trostan is definitely good at tripping you up! Haven’t been up there in ages. I’ll get back to the Antrim Hills once the Mourne Skyline is done.
@@StephenJReid good luck with that one and the overnight wall run. Fair play 👌

I keep meaning to go fly my drone out to that one!
wall anxiety, is like parking place anxiety (there may be a closer spot), love it. Thanks.
Haha, yeah or one parking place might be covered in nails and the other is perfect 😂

Hmmm are you saying I should go back at night? 😱😱
Very nice Stephen great history every day is a school day thanks for sharing cheers
Thanks! Trying to combine history, comedy, horror and sport in this one😂
really enjoyed that stephen well done
Thanks 🙂
Awesome video!
Thanks Gregg!

Thank for letting me know! I’d heard there were others but not sure where
first time viewer, class content sir. just subbed.
Thanks very much! It’s a bit of a mix of stuff on here 😁😁
What a great vlog! I loved it! So much to discover. Also- I could never say begone to a sweet pup who ran all the way over to see me and say hi.
Thanks Kate! Haha, it was a working dog and I could hear it’s angry master yelling so didn’t want to make him mad.
Looks like the axel of one of the landing gear.
Could be. Didn’t look like an engine part to me, which I’ve previously seen people claimin
Great video, very interesting.
Thanks! 🙂
Nice video, thx 🤗
Boggy foot was the sheep’s revenge👻. Great video.
Those sneaky sheep!
I did slieve donard for the first time yesterday it was way harder than I thought 🙃
Congrats! It's a tough climb, I've done it loads of times and that final bit is still brutal
I love finding places like this. The haunted house bit gave me an idea to make a 'spooky' run for halloween!
My running club does a “spookydoo” run through a local forest at night in October 😱

Magic video Stephen, next video defo a night exploration of the ginger bread cottage? I'd watch that for sure 😂☠👻
Haha, I do have some camping lanterns to review…

I did indeed, loads. Just have to go through them all first!

OMG Yes! I love Creepy Ghost Stories Stephen!! Please more Irish Ghost Stories!! Thanks! :D
Haha, I'll see what I can do
A little disappointed you decided NOT to go in to the murder shed this time.
Haha! Maybe I shall return
I don't know about your country history..I would like to know
That’s a LONG story!

Haha yeah with your tent! Didn’t spot the plaque or any more wreckage but didn’t have much time.
@@StephenJReid I haven’t seen the wreckage you showed, we’ll have to exchange notes lol
