  • Gardens can be beautiful but they can also contain potentially toxic plants. Here are just a few examples:
    Wisteria
    - Wisteria is a beautiful flowering vine, but it contains toxic compounds, including lectins and glycosides.
    - All parts of the plant, especially the seeds and pods, can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain if ingested.
    - Keep wisteria away from curious pets and children.
    Poison Hemlock
    - Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is a biennial herb that grows 4-8+ feet tall.
    - Its smooth, bluish stem is often purple-spotted, and its leaves are finely cut and fern-like.
    - The entire plant is deadly poisonous due to piperidine alkaloids, including coniine and gamma-coniceine.
    - It's crucial to recognize poison hemlock and avoid handling it, especially in central and western Ohio
    Ohio Buckeye
    - Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is a native tree with distinctive leaves and showy yellow flowers.
    - However, all parts of the tree contain toxic saponins.
    - Ingesting buckeye seeds can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness.
    - Appreciate its beauty from a safe distance!
    Hosta
    - Hostas are popular shade-loving plants, prized for their lush foliage.
    - While not as deadly as the others, hostas contain saponins and oxalates.
    - Ingesting large quantities can lead to stomach upset, so it's best to avoid nibbling on them.
Remember to be cautious and educate yourself about the plants in your garden to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor space!
