He didn't have to go all over the scale to show that he could "sing". He could sing opera and love songs. Etta James was fantastic but if I'm not mistaken, "At Last" came out in the 1930-1940's. There were a lot of wonderful tenors, baritones, sopranos and contralto's in the "Big Bands".
