Are cough syrups worth it?

When patients ask me if it’s worth buying a cough syrup to help with their cough, I tell them no. Most cough syrup are designed to soothe your throat to reduce your cough reflex. You can easily do this at home by making yourself a cup of honey and lemon (avoid hot drinks in small children)
if your cough is persisting for more than three weeks, you should be seeing your doctor to assess why that is rather than trying to cover up with cough syrup.
Hot lemon and honey are not suitable for babies under 1 year old

I'm in my mid 50s and as far back as I can recall, my parents and grandparents used honey/lemon/hot water to treat our coughs. Always worked👌🏿 Still does🙂

Are there cases where a cough would require antibiotics and what would you be looking out for as a doctor?

Yes some symptoms but not limited to: breathing faster than usual, breathlessness, productive cough, fever, chest pain etc. you should never try to diagnose a chest infection yourself though, if you’re worried about a cough it’s always best to get it checked by a medical professional.

they are not available over the counter in the UK, they will make you drowsy and constipated.

But you need one with a prescription... nothing beats a shot of morphine when you got the flu!😂

Honey and Lemon is a essential beside our first aid box.
When I was younger and we were all moving in with partners or getting married their present from me included a fully functioning
First Aid Box and Pad to Write All Emergency Numbers as babies arrived I did a updated ones with things for children but to have beside First Aid Box was Jar of Honey and Basket of Lemons.
Years go by friends children fly nest what have they gone away with yep a First Aid Box Note Pad for Numbers (it never runs out of charge like a phone) and Honey and Lemon..
We used Honey and Lemon all the time on Respiratory Ward I worked on effective and tastes tons nicer than a Cough Syrup
