    I know this episode is mostly about Kageyama but we should talk about how sweet and great Hinata is🙏 He shows his not-so-cute sides in the volleyball (thirst for victory, greediness, extreme determination, sometimes unhealthy competitiveness etc) but he's sooo genuine, friendly and positive as a person. He literally became friends with Kageyama who has huge trust and anger issues. I dream of such a friend🫂

    I love how Kageyama's situation was handled differently not only compared to junior high but also compared to S1 with Karasuno when Kageyama "cast his cloak and crown aside" during the first official game with Seijou. When the King issue was brought up again here, I was excited as I love the conflict but also curious about how they were going to handle it without being repetitive - the path of acceptance was far from my first guess, and it makes sense that it's Hinata who encourages it, as he definitely understands Kageyama better than anyone else.
    Some nuances might be harder to pick up, especially when you're actively reacting, but you're right to blame Atsumu lol - his "goody two shoes" address shook Kageyama to the core because up until recently, his main problem was being the very opposite: aggressive, egocentric, uncooperative. It was Oikawa's advice from S2 about giving Hinata exactly the sets he wants that helped Kageyama overcome those faults of his (along with all of Karasuno's efforts, of course), while here all of a sudden Atsumu tells him that doing that is a problem, or even a sign of weakness. It makes sense that Kageyama, who's prone to missing nuance, is confused.
    it's also cool how, while Oikawa's advice pushed Kageyama in that direction, resulting in him overly adjusting to the spikers, back in S2 we actually got to see that Oikawa isn't like that: there was a flashback with Kindaichi where, despite his feedback, Oikawa pushes him and ends up making his contact point higher. He knows how to find balance, and now Kageyama's also about to learn how to do that.

      Literally!! I put a comment on this discussion on the haikyuu Reddit about this a little while back, but it's funny how from what we see from Oikawa his advice was antithetical to how he played with his spikers Vs Atsumu's comment/advice being the opposite from how he literally bends over backwards from trying to give the best sets to his spikers. That both great setters give Kageyama what he needs to hear at that moment to progress.
      It also backs up a fair amount of people's opinions that Oikawa is probably the best setter in the show because Oikawa was doing S4 progression level stuff that Atsumu talked about and Kageyama developed in literal flashbacks in S2. He's so ahead of that curve it's insane. Like yeah he might not be completely accurate or have as much innate talent as Atsumu or Kageyama, but he adjusts and communicates to his teammates and elevates the team so much easier and quicker than both of them do.

    This episode always makes me think back of what the All-Japan coach said; that he hoped when the players went back to their own team, they'd be confused. Kageyama went from a high functioning, high quality plays team who could hit his every toss (even demanding more), to a team that missed his perfect tosses or weren't trying their best. I think his reaction is in part of being called a Goody two shoes (lowering his quality of tosses to the player's bad habits) and the fact that his formerly easy to hit tosses at the camp were now being missed by his team.
    True it's because his team was trying new things during their practice match but I feel they should've had more communication between one another xD

    Man... this episode is just straight character writing MASTERCLASS. The episodes features very little Volleyball and yet it's so incredibly captivating and engaging. Karasuno is such a great little family, if Kageyama had attended a different school and been on a different team, he may not have been able to grow as much as he has. The first years take center stage a lot of the time in Haikyuu, but I really love how the story always takes care to emphasize the importance of the senpais and supporting cast in general. Kageyama now knows he doesn’t have to hold back with the team just like they won’t hold back with him!
    Honestly props to Atsumu for making Kageyama realize he could be pushing his team way more instead of passively accepting what they’re normally used to

  • @dynavity
    @dynavity Місяць тому +35

    Not sure why the anime changed it, but in the manga Karasuno actually went to play at Date Tech’s school gym which makes their team’s third years coming in to crash the practice match feel less out of place lmao (and also adds to the environmental storytelling with Karasuno trying to work together while being in an unfamiliar space) though I’m glad you didn’t mind it much!
    Anyway, I love this episode so much for showing how far Kageyama has come with the team. His character writing could’ve easily plateaued after he overcame his initial struggles, but as always the author knows how to push their cast to the next level through the medium of volleyball, with the message that there is always room, whether as a player or in life, for more and more growth and improvement 🌱

    Tsukki is so me - he realized he got baited but got stuck so much in his own head he didnt actually do the second jump :D
    I think that what coach Ukai is saying is - lets have what needs to happen happen, better to clean the air now.
    Yes Atsumu out here fixing Kageyama's bad habit - Since his big team blowup, Kageyama is mega scared of being annoying to people so he basically never says what he thinks, never pushes anyone on anything (except Hinata who pushes his buttons right). That got compounded by the whole "not closing eyes" set. Oikawa told him "maybe you should actually listen to the people you are setting" and since Kageyama idolizes him, he just took it as gospel and would give everyone precisely what they want. The thing is - Oikawa doesnt do that. Remember back when he was learning to match set with Kindaichi on a broad? Kindaichi was like "this is too far can you set it closer?" and Oikawa is like "sure but first we are trying this a bit more cuz I think you can do it" (Paraphrasing)
    We dont see it but I suspect that on that play with Brocollli No.2, setting it slower was the right call and so Kageyama should have stood his ground hence why Atsumu came to speak his mind. Its a relatively complicated thing but this might be my favourite character development in the show - I will get into some symbolism later on :D - here I will just say that I love the fact that sometimes you have to take few steps back to go down different route if you hit a dead end - glad Furudate actually realized that when making this and included it.
    Glad you had a blast - so did I :D

    Since the first episode was a while ago for you idk if you remember but when Hinata first saw kageyama walk into the gym before he even knew who he was he imagined him with a kings robe. This was before he even knew about the nickname and before he even saw him play. He always saw Kageyama as a king, and not for the negative connotation. For hinata, kageyama always was this king, someone who demanded the best out of you and was willing to help you get to that place.

    The thing with Atsumu (the one who called Kageyama a goody-two-shoes) he hates when he sees good players not playing their best and he noticed that Kageyama had the bad habit of enabling spikers' bad habits instead of pushing them where he knows would be the best to set for him. Atsumu doesn't care about people's feelings so he says it as it is 😭 and even though kageyama can be mean he does care about people's feelings a lot. So he can say what he wants, learn to say it in a nicer way and his team will listen. So he can 'be a goody-two-shoes [there]'.

    When you talked about Kageyama and Tsukishima (17:00) I think this is exactly what Atsumu was about when he said Kageyama is "goody two shoes". Kageyama's role model for the setting was Oikawa, so he tried to apply Oikawa's method - giving the perfect set his players wanted/liked. But Atsumu is a more demanding setter - he would push his teammates to hit the sets HE thinks they are capable of hitting. And I think this is what Kageyama tried to do it to Tsukki in this episode - not be goody two shoes who give Tsukki his favourite ball, but push him to the limits of his skills. Challange him in a way that make attack stronger. I think Kageyama can balance Oikawa's and Atsumu's style to be able to adjust his sets according to situation on the court.

    I think when Miya Atsumu said “anyone who can’t hit my sets just sucks” can be seen as arrogant and cocky but it gives the same intentions as when kageyama says “I’m not gonna stoop down to your level”.
    Where as oikawa maximizes every persons potential with easy to hit sets, Miya atsumu brings every person to his level with his sets. Atsumu knows u can do better so he challenges u to hit his set that basically says “you can hit it up here can’t you?”.
    And as the story progresses, I think kageyama is slowly turning into a mix of both play styles. I think oikawa and Atsumu as characters are written really well.

    One additional thing about Date's team and how good they can be next year: What we're seeing right now is already their finalized roster! Because the 3rd years left after inter-high, they've already had half a year to play with the new unit, so by the time inter-high comes around next year they will have already played with their roster for a whole year. Whereas teams like karasuno will only have had a couple of months to adjust to the 3rd years leaving, and to try to incorporate the new first years.
    So although letting your 3rd years go early puts you at a disadvantage for the spring tournament (as we saw with Datekô), it gives you an edge for inter-high.

    12:09 this is another case of "i think the english translation doesn't properly capture the meaning being conveyed," so here coach says "[...] but that doesn't mean you can't fight" whereas the scanlations of the manga that were coming out at the time had it translated as "[...] but that doesn't mean you can't make demands of your own," which i think is more intuitive and fitting to the context of the scene and team dynamic;
    Kageyama went from being a setter that was overbearing and demanding to one that is more accommodating of his hitters and their habits to the point of him becoming a bit of a pushover as a setter which is essentially what Atsumu was getting at when he called him a "goody-two shoes," it was an extreme overcorrection in the opposite direction for him which now needs to be corrected again back towards a more balanced approach where he not only gives his hitters tosses that are comfortable for them to hit, but also challenges them in ways that will elevate their play

    This is a tad late comment, but I can say that this is the episode where Kageyama has finally accepted his King side and found the balance between the setting principles of Oikawa and Atsumu (hence the flashback to their "Are you giving shrimpy the exact tosses he wants?" and "You are a Goody Two-Shoes", respectively), thanks to his ever-understanding Karasuno family, most especially Hinata.
    From this point onwards, he really started to fully unmask his Autistically coded personality by being himself without reservations to push everyone in Karasuno to the best of their furthest (and further) limits, with effective communication skills and missing essential social cues being the core issues he needs to work on, especially for a team sport like volleyball---well, to quote Hinata, Kageyama "always has an issue with tone or saying something unnecessarily".
    It's one among my all-time fave episodes in Haikyuu!!, especially being a very likely Autistic-ADHDer neurodivergent wherein I really do resonate with the struggles and quirks of Shoyo and Tobio ^__^
    (P.S. What you said, bro Lachy---"Your competitive self...you should never ever hide it. It's such a rare skill."---tugged my heart a little bit. Due to a bunch of depressing events and unfortunate factors in life, my old competitive self when it comes to academics from preschool to high school was buried for the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's only until a year ago that I started to gradually revive it, and what you said further strengthened my resolve a little bit more to see it through the end. Thanks so much!)

I have no idea what events happened to you but don’t let them be a reason or excuse to hold you back! I really appreciate you sharing

    This is what oikawa does. Kageyama is bringing the best out of the players now instead of compensating for everyone, we saw this when oikawa was practicing with kindaichi and the ball was too high, but oikawa told him to keep trying. when atsumu said "on the court, youre a goody two shoes huh?" He meant that kageyama would ask every time how the set was and adjusted depending on what the player thought they wanted, instead of giving them a set that would improve them as players. "Goody two shoes" meaning that he way over accommodated for the players.

  • @rafaelribeiro99
    @rafaelribeiro99 Місяць тому

    This is awesome character development for the team but even more for Kageyama, because he did grown and did what oikawa said, "do the best sets for his spikers", but kageyama was doing the sets taking into account the bad habits of the players, and the problem with this is that he was not allowing them to grow, which is something that Oikawa does, and we saw that in a flashback of him telling Kindaichi to try hitting a higher ball, and ended up, he was able to do it. And all of the reading the players conditions, who is fresh? who is tired? who is off their game? everything. We all know Kageyama is talented, but when he merge the Talent x Experience x Knowledge, hes a beast of a player

    I adore the arc on display for Kageyama in this season. In S1 we saw how he was rejected by his team for poor communication and oppressively difficult plays, and it really affected him mentally and emotionally. So he obviously dialed it back with Karasuno.
    And in the first half of S2, he had that conversation with Oikawa and was confronted with whether he was really trying to sync up with his teammates and making efforts to set balls that gave them their best options in the air.
    This time it all has to do with that Goody Two Shoes comment. Kageyama synced up with his team but then the communication stopped again. And it's acknowledged here that the onus was on both sides, both by Kageyama and the rest of the team. Kageyama took what Oikawa said to heart but was still afraid of rocking the boat too much because of his past trauma.
    But Hinata has always been the one to speak up and challenge Kageyama. Unlike the other teammates, everytime Hinata jumps, it's basically a challenge to Kageyama. "I'm already up in the air before you've even set the ball, so get the ball here if you can", so it makes sense that he would be the one to be like "why are you guys so afraid of talking back to each other? It's never been a problem for me."
    This is the season more than S2 is where I think Kageyama truly surpasses Oikawa as a setter. He's finally amalgamated his pre-S1 tendency to do a challenging set that the teammates couldn't match with the S2 overcorrection of tossing perfect and easy balls for each individual's skills, both which arguably stunts or slows the team's ability to grow new skills. With his S1 skills and his S2 understanding of his team's individual skills, he can now start to toss more challenging sets that are tuned to each individual player in a way that allows them all to continue to grow stronger as a team instead of taking that burden on himself.
    Gosh dang, I just love these volleyball dorks so much 😭

    I think Oikawa said something that Kageyama misinterpreted. Because I think Hinata wants tosses that allow him to fight, but he also wants tosses taht win. I think Hinata doesn't mind when Kageyama is bossy if it means they score. Even if they aren't easy to spike I think the tosses he wants are the ones Kageyama puts his all into.

      Kinda reminds me of the situation when Aoba Johsai was playing Date tech and Oikawa tried to toss away from the block and iwaizumi got mad. It’s like he was trying to tell oikawa “I don’t care if the toss is harder to hit, give me the “Best” toss so we can win. I think that’s a pretty cool detail that some people miss out on.

    couple years ago I watched Coach Donny react to Haikyuu and he brought up a really good point on this episode: it was kinda unfortunate that Kageyama grew up around Oikawa, imagine if he was a 1st year at Daichi's middle school, would've been a completely different person; and this is a really good assessment for reasons i cannot say (very deep spoilers), but you're also right about how dogshit his middle school team was when it came to handling kids

    Eyyy!!! I'm a little bit early today. Thank you for the new video 🤩🙌 this is quite a reward after going to the clinic as my whole body aches after our mini volleyball game yesterday.
    Can't believe that practicing my serves after classes would result me to be in this state. However, I can now understand why Yams have a hard time with serving in the first place. It really requires a lot of confidence to serve 😭 I was really scared that the ball wouldn't go in the other side of the net and disappoint my teammates 😭
    Guess what, I really sucked at it 😂 hence why the after class practice that I did on my own. But on our mini game, I was able to receive the ball for a couple of times and it was soooo rewarding 🤩🙌 HAHAHAHA another long comment but yeah just an update on my progress!
    Thanks for the video as always Lachy!!! 😊

    the kageyama's wording in itself is not an issue on its own. Everyone knows that Kageyama's social skills are lacking so nobody expects him to always say everything perfectly. It is the fact that he was rude and disrespectful to noya who although is shorter and always act childish IS still older than Kageyama and in japan the seniority is a huge deal. Haikyuu adress this back in season 1 with Hinata and Kenma. When they first met and Hinata realizes that Kenma is older he immediately apologizes for talking to him so informaly even though he was nothing but nice and simply having a friendly conversation with fellow volleyball player even though they are complete strangers. In japan that is simply part of their culture and people like Kenma who openly dislike this notion are in minority. In the west this concept is strange and nobody can understand it but in japan its huge deal. That is why Tanaka acts all mushy when hinata and kageyama call him senpai and why nishinoya was going full "happy idiot" in season 1 when hinata called him senpai. Although seniority thing seem weird it is based on respect and it very positive, Seniors protect and support sometimes even mentor the younger generations even though its matter of single or two years while first and second years show respect to their seniors the same way you would show respect to your parent.
    For kageyama to be that rude and disrespectful to his senior is just unaceptable in japan, its just because of his words its about what they represent

    *NOT REALLY SPOILERS BUT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW* The manga does not go to 2nd and 3rd year (unless I missed some volumes) but it does go to when they are adults and you get to see the path some of the characters took, whether it was volleyball or just a random job. So there's a pretty big time skip.
