    There are a lot of things I would change. I have found that a single pass with maximum power will treat the different parts of the grain of the wood the same. Go slower or multiple passes and you increase how much of the grain shows up. I go with maximum power and maximum LPI and then adjust the speed to the material and depth of cut desired. If there is still too much burn then I might do a second pass very lightly to cut away the darker surface but knowing there is a cost in that the grain of the wood will be stronger. I also increase the contrast from nearly white to black as that creates the most range for the laser to set its power. There are 256 possible power settings but not enough white-to-black range might leave only ten and then if your total power is low then the steps will also be less per setting, so total power at a faster speed going from white to black will leave a much sharper image.
    When choosing an image care is needed to see if the shading is from height or from lighting. As is the case with the bee there is much stronger lighting on one side than the other. The deeper your 3D cut of the bee the worse it will look. In such cases, dots or dither will look much better because your eye is judging depth by the lighting to the side, and if you cut deeply you will cut the dark side of the shape much deeper than the light side which if in strong lighting will put shaded things and dark things (like a pair of glasses) obviously as a hole and right next to it things light up like an ear as high as a cheek or different sides of a nose with a big drop-off.
    If the image is really good for relief carving then it will look strange as a dot or dither as the cues your eye expects of lighting will not be there

    • @ct1freak
      @ct1freak 3 роки тому +2

      stl is a format recognized by the plotters that run a cnc router. the grayscale hes using has nothing to do with an stl it is simply the lighting effects, ocular occlusion ect from the 3d rendering software it was modeled and the image created for thumbnail purposes with. technically any image can be used but your 3d effect will not be perfect. the only reason hes able to do this is because the common use of the lighting technique ppl use for making these. so no you dont need special software per say however if you want an actual stl it will require knowledge some 3d modeling program. you could use photoshop or equivalent and carefully adjust and play around with levels ect until you get something workable.

    I'm in the middle of trying to burn a 3d File that I bought as a pdf. The person told me he transferred it from an STL file, so I think he may have done what you did. Playing with the speed and power to get the depth I want - hopefully I don't over do the the burning. Thanks for your demonstration. Now I need to figure out how to clean the smoke off, just a light sanding doesn't achieve what I want in the end.

If you had bought the STL file could Lightburn import it or would you have had to convert it to an image file? Do you just look for STL as a source of good grayscale?

    • @SawTooth1953
      @SawTooth1953 Рік тому

      YOu missed the point of sanding after: to lighten up the areas that should be lightest overall. Those areas stand taller because they were lasered at minimal power. (You’re thinking of preparing wood, in general. This is post-lasering treatment of wood engraved for the purpose of creating 3D effects, where the darker the area, the deeper it is engraved, and vice versa.)
