  • While this video was made using a JBL horn driver, it would apply to any drivers: Altec, Klipsch, Western Electric, Eminence, EV, etc.
In it we show how to check and clean the voice coil gap, voice coil, replace the foam / felt, solder up the wires, and test the unit.
Items we used in the video:
    Qpqpq Digital Microscope
    amzn.to/3UDN6sV
Simply Speakers JBL Binding Post Pair
    amzn.to/3QFVtTK
    Rapid Remover Adhesive Remover
    amzn.to/4aqa1xv
    JBL Felt / Wool Pad

I recommend you advise folks to use a non magnetic screwdriver to remove the diaphragm bolts. I know from experience that a driver with a strong magnet can pull the screwdriver towards the magnet and damage the fragile diaphragm. Thank you for another great teaching video!

I was so excited when I seen this video. We service a fog horn used on oil & gas platforms in Gulf Of Mexico. It’s got 5 of these drivers, but a little bigger than yours. That felt pad you had before cutting would probably fit in them. The horn outputs a square wave of 645 hz. We managed to get some new coils but most of the time the housings are really corroded from the salt water environment. Thanks!

Lots of good information, thanks for making this. BTW, I own Klipsh Cornwall II's (1991) with Bob Crites crossovers.

Hey Mark, great to see you back doing videos. Nice project with the drivers. Maybe some 300B SET amps in the future to drive these??

Interesting project. Amazing how small the gap is for the sound to propagate through. I'm surprised that you used more spring terminals as replacements. Not great terminations.

If these were on the back of speaker enclosures, I would agree. These will be inside of cabinets more than likely so think of it as internal speaker wiring connections, thus I'm not as concerned. These new spring terminals are pretty heavy duty compared to the OG.

You want the felt to go all the way to the edges and do the sides but that felt is too thick and use foam with it from a washing up sponge keep that to the original size about no more than 8 mm in depth but use like three or four millimeter felt like from a turntable mat cut to size right to the edges and do the sides as well, then stick the sponge on top. Making sure that the sponge isn't touching the diaphragm but doesn't matter if it's pushing against the surround a bit

Hello. I had a SR 2100 boombox from a friend. Inside is like brand new. I cleaned the switches with contact spray. AM radio works fine but FM does not play any station clearly. Every FM station has static noise. It has an antenna and it’s connected to the tuner pcb. I suppose the radio signal is good because my car radio gets all the stations. I also sprayed contact spray inside the tuning capacitor however did not fix the issue. So what can be the problem of the boombox?

ever try University driver? no way...same w/some E,V. drivers , they sealed "em up good
keep running into JBL crappy foam surrounds , and the re-cone kits also use foam............plastic foam degrades , so find something else.....i make surrounds with thinned silicone , a big pain

    • @BlankBrain
      @BlankBrain 4 місяці тому

I had the foam surrounds on my JBL drivers from 1978 replaced around 1998. The new surrounds show no signs of deterioration. I'm pretty sure the new foam is a different formula. Since then, I've learned how to replace surrounds. It's not that big a deal.
